“None”
April 4th, 2021Researching another Bucs story, Joe found a comment that got Joe to chortle with glee.
Over at Buccaneers.com, resident Bucs historian and multimedia maven Scott Smith fielded a question from a reader asking what skill position is “the biggest need” to be filled on the third day of the draft.
(Smith assumed the reader was referring to offensive skill positions.)
Smith’s response was succinct and dead-on.
“I mean, none of them, really.”
And he is absolutely right. There is no position — skill or otherwise — the Bucs need to draft, no matter the round.
Let’s think about this: Quarterback? Nah. Running back? Nah. Wide receiver? Nah. Tight end? Hell no!
Now Joe could easily see the Bucs drafting a running back at No. 32. There is no guarantee Ronald Jones returns in 2022, and Joe doesn’t expect Playoff Lenny to return. So if someone is looking for holes, short of a terrible injury, that is very possibly a position of need right around the corner.
Joe believes the NFL adding a 17th game means having two competent backs will be more important due to the wear-and-tear those guys absorb.
Joe guesses you could make the same argument for offensive line, too.

Not in any order:
QB, DL, OL, LB/edge. CB, S
I would fine with BPA in any round
April 4th, 2021 at 9:33 am
Dline for future and depth, oline for future and depth.
I would say the biggest need for depth is at Corner.I love Davis, and really like Bunting and think Dean is pretty good.Could use some young talent in case of injuries. Those would be my first three positions to draft. Unless there is a qb you really like that brady could develope.
April 4th, 2021 at 9:37 am
I think rojo is gone after this year…and lenny is in one year deal so i am cool of they use 1st round on running back. Especially one that can catch and pass block …our receivers have average hands at best. Rojo has stone hands. I mean he struggles to catch a lofted screen pass at times. I dont get it. Even non athletic people can catch a dang football.
And again i would be good with trask in round 3 . No sooner
But i think bucs go after qb next year cause they will have clearer picture on what brady wants to do.
Draft trenches…sucks dline is so week this year.

Maybe the best roster we’ve ever seen as a true Bucs fan. But let’s not get too cocky here. I mean are we really sold on the Guard position outside of A. Marpet? And for crying out loud do we really not feel we can’t find an upgrade at starting cornerback via draft or atleast someone better than DEAN? The guy played well against A rod on ACOUPLE of plays but outside of that he’s was AVERAGE at BEST! Todd bowls has done a wonderful job with at best AVERAGE defensive back group! A. Winfield jr is a stud. He stands alone in that group
April 4th, 2021 at 9:47 am
Correction – our running backs have average hands at best
April 4th, 2021 at 9:49 am
Drebucsfan
Cappa did not give up a sack last tear that i can remember Maybe 1. Dude has gotten better each year and finally out in the proper weight likely helped
But ge will likely go for the benjamins after this season
April 4th, 2021 at 9:51 am
Always draft linemen. Both sides.
April 4th, 2021 at 9:53 am
I’d like to trade back and add a pick in the 3rd. I’d like to have the best available corner first followed by Edge, Dt offensive line in any order. Our corners showed up for the playoffs but were torched regularly during the season.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:06 am
It would be a good time to pick up a great KR and punt returner who could be added for gadget plays. This is a area where we need to have someone reliable and explosive as it could make a difference in a few games to have a huge return or at least have the threat of it.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:09 am
Am I clinically insane for wanting Bucs to trade all their picks for next year’s draft so we have 2 picks in every round???
April 4th, 2021 at 10:11 am
As much as I believe you keep adding O-line and D-line in the firstvround…Always! It’s refreshing that goingbinto this draft you don’t need to worry if you guy is there or not. Just draft the best available player and crack a beer!
April 4th, 2021 at 10:17 am
DL/EDGE
QB post Tommy
RB
That’s it. And they’re all depth pieces to ride the pine this year.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:30 am
Edge, OL, CB, DL, returner then OL again.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:38 am
Joe,
The bucs are in the luxurious position of not having to draft to fill holes. Trading back for more picks this year causes more cuts of potentially good young players. Wouldn’t it be better to trade back to next years draft when added picks would benefit us more? I am not sure what next years interior dline candidates look like, as this year’s selection has been deemed weak, so I’m interested in finding out . Would trading out of the first this year for a second this year and perhaps a second or third in next years draft be beneficial?
Thanks

Licht obviously nailed the last draft. Doubt if he’ll be so lucky two times in a row. But it could happen. A fun draft for him and for fans this time. I suspect he’ll do quite nicely – depth.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:42 am
I know I’m in the minority here, but I’m gonna keep beating the Etienne gong. DT, Edge, OL all traditionally make more sense at pick 32, but I don’t know how you pass up on Etienne if he’s there. Lenny is gone next year and I am not banking on Vaughn. Etienne IMO has the potential to be every bit as good as Dalvin, AK, or CMac and passing on that level of talent is foolish.
April 4th, 2021 at 10:57 am
You hear it all the time, Defense wins titles. Good Corners and Edge rushers are always in short supply, so developing quality depth is a winning ticket to get you to the Super Bowl.
April 4th, 2021 at 11:40 am
Agree with JAL – Hope the Bucs emphasize D depth in the draft. But also, as some here have noted, address our only weak spot – KR/PR/special teams too.
April 4th, 2021 at 12:28 pm
Jack Burton Mercer has a very good point. I agree with him unless Najee Harris or Travis Etienne are avaibale at 32. Even in that scenario a trade back to get more picks is an option.
April 4th, 2021 at 12:37 pm
If ettiene or Harris are available at 32 you have to take one of them. If there gone you take the best available. A guy always free falls on draft day. I would only trade out of the first round for there 2nd round and 3rd round this year. And there second or third next year. Losing the 5 th year option on a player is a pretty big deal if he turns out to be a great player. Like Godwin if he was drafted in the first round we would only be paying him about 10 million this year and could franchise him next year.
April 4th, 2021 at 1:04 pm
How many QBs on the roster Joe? Two underacheiving tight ends and one a season away from possible retirement. Not too many teams in the NFL are going to pay tight ends at the rate the Bucs are paying them. Suhs last year, Gholston last contract year, Jensen last year of contract. To say we don’t need anyone in the draft is not planning for the future. The Bucs, barring an injury to Brady, should back in the Superbowl. It wouldn’t hurt to get a couple of replacements for the players we may lose in 2022. Then in 2022 draft get whatever else we need.
April 4th, 2021 at 1:15 pm
If AB isn’t signed, I could see a need for a #3 WR/KR/PR…….yep….we’ve got Miller & Johnson……but, in my book….they are two #4 receivers at this point….if either Godwin or Evans go down….we have a need….
Other than that….I’d say adding to the Dline/Edge because those players usually are in a rotation…..
April 4th, 2021 at 1:26 pm
A successor to TB is important imo. A plug n play fa would be very difficult. And i agree Joe, RB is important too. Can never have enough depth in the trenches.
April 4th, 2021 at 3:17 pm
We have depth needs all over the place, including DE, DT, CB, Safety, OT, QB, etc. I expect we will take a flyer on a WR at some point just because the draft is so deep with them.
April 4th, 2021 at 3:38 pm
RB makes sense. And almost any position makes sense…….But i think theres too much hype about RB……Let the Bucs do what they do. They are pretty danged good at it.
I keep thinking back to last year. Just imagine if Clyde Edwards Helaire dropped to Round 2 and the Bucs passed and still drafted Winfield(I feel like they would have piccked Winfield over Helaire). All of yall would have cryed and screamed that the Bucs didnt take Helaire and as it turns out all yall would have been wrong.
White, Wirfs, Bunting, Winfield, Dean have all been good to great picks. Since Bruce got here our top choices have been nearly flawless. Sit back and enjoy whomever they choose is what i say.
April 4th, 2021 at 3:42 pm
I could see the Bucs take a RB or QB or TE or OL or WR or DL or EDGE or LB or DB this year. I can make a case for any of those choices at 32.
The only 2 positions I rule out would be K and P……Interior LB doesnt sound like much of a posibility but could makd sense if it was somebody very versitile with elite coverage skills that Bowles could move around. That moneybacker spot we saw a bit of.
April 4th, 2021 at 3:50 pm
If they can’t trade down best player available!
April 4th, 2021 at 4:07 pm
Pull a Ditka, but instead of giving away your entire draft for one player, just draft 7 edge rushers. One or two are bound to be decent. 😋
April 4th, 2021 at 4:57 pm
Suh old , jpp getting up there in age or cant go wrong with protecting brady.
April 4th, 2021 at 5:15 pm
Oxycondoms protect Brady hes the only QB on the roster better draft one unless Leftwhich is going too suit up.
April 4th, 2021 at 5:19 pm
Take the best player available at each round. Regardless of position he played.
April 4th, 2021 at 5:19 pm
There’s no QBs on the roster other than Brady… I’d say one is needed
April 4th, 2021 at 5:39 pm
Nobodies really talking about DB as an option but you gotta think that the Bucs got aplan for that position in the near furure with a couple guys they are needing to pay.
It makes sense to draft a corner, just say, if they see somebody who is goid enough to fill Carlton Davis’s shoes……And I really hope the Bucs plan to keep Davis but if they wanna stay at low cost for that position instead it makes a lot of sense to draft a Corner now.
Then you could look at guys like Suh and JPPand if they arent with us in 2022 you could fill the position in free agency….Which is more plausible if you have cheaper options for the secondary.
Lots of ways the Bucs could approach this draft. Not sure there is one right or wrong way…..Makes a lot of sense for many of yall calling for BPA.
April 4th, 2021 at 5:55 pm
Agreed take the best position when its our turn…and make it even in the positions with depth but if an awesome rb or wr is open grab him but best player at the moment
April 4th, 2021 at 7:59 pm
I don’t see why Rojo would leave. Running behind this offensive line is a blessing. If he takes more money to play elsewhere, he’ll probably flop behind a bad offensive line. The staff likes him, he runs hard, and he blossomed last year. He’ll have plenty of chances to prove himself this year and he’s young. I think he stays.
April 5th, 2021 at 10:23 am
In order of “need”:
DL / OLB
OL
ILB
Secondary
QB
RB
WR
