Bucs Strategy Is Just Common Sense

March 19th, 2021

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

While this is a bit dated, the general focus is still dead-on.

Over at Pro Football Network, Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier believes what the Bucs have done in free agency represents common sense, or least makes more sense than most teams will use in free agency.

Tanier wrote a free agency preview and he noted what the Bucs planned to do — and thus far have done — is smarter than most teams‘ battle plans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

They think they are: Contending

Actual status: Contending

Extending Tom Brady’s contract until he’s old enough to play a grandfather on the CW Network to free up money to franchise-tag Chris Godwin and extend Lavonte David and (maybe) Shaquil Barrett’s contracts carries a lot of risk. Still, it makes more sense than what many other NFC teams are doing.

Other tidbits Tanier included … in the wake of the Taysom Hill contract, the Saints think they are contending when in reality they are tanking. Tanier also went against the grain of #NFLMedia in another article on the same site claiming Bill Belichick’s moves are a bunch of “D-” signings disguised at “A+” signings.

As long as the Bucs win the NFC South this year, all moves by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht this past week will be damn smart.

I just had a hallucination: Bucs will trade 1st Rd pick. Done deal pal

  2. mike Says:

I think we are done signing for now. After the draft there will be some good players at bargin prices and we can pick up a few more dudes.

  3. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

As it turns out the self described “meathead scout” is a pretty good GM.

  4. 68%fraud Says:

Who cares if they win the south?? All I care about is another SB

  5. Swampbuc Says:

In 2003 I thought the Bucs would be even better than they were in 2002. Injuries killed them and the departure of Al Singleton left a hole in the LB room that neither Nate Webster nor Jamie Duncan could fill.

It’s really really tough to repeat. The Bucs were fortunate that their injuries in 2020 occurred at positions of depth. Imagine if both LVD and Devon White get injured at the same time? Yikes.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

Still have Suh hanging, but he’s always fashionably late to the party.

  7. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@Jaymiss, exactly right on. I think Licht should have been Exec of the Year. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves bc he signed “Tom Brady”. Who would sign him – ummm 30 other teams felt TB was done (except the Colts).

At the point for voting on Exec of the Year, Licht had built up one heck of a roster, including the most recent drafting of Winfield and trading up for the best tackle in the draft, Wirfs. I could go on and on, but I am sure we all feel this way

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The strategy is very simple….sign guys that have rings.

i think we’ll sign AB soon and SUH after the draft….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. geno711 Says:

I agree with 68% fraud whatever that title means.

I don’t care if this group of guys has bad games in the regular season. They do not have to go 14-3 or better if there is a 17 game schedule. Just get in the dance and win the super bowl. We know this set of guys are capable of looking even better during the playoffs.

  12. Bird Says:

    I agree with most all

I will say this. I dont think saints are tanking. They may be rebuilding cause of so many bad contracts and dead space. Payton is a confident (more like cocky) coach. They can win. They have so much talent.

Teddy bridgewater went 5-0 last year as starter when brees went down
Taysom hill went 3-1 last year as a starter when brees went down

Taysom and jameis will win games. So what you want but jameis will win games there if he is starter. No question. They could finish behind bucs in division. That team is so talented and they have whooped are butts for years.

  13. SufferingSince76 Says:

I hope they already have a gentleman’s agreement with Suh.

  14. Mitch Says:

The offense will be better, and the defense will feast. DW for DPOY!

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

Signings will not take the pressure off of Bill Belichik. Yes the move to extend Brady was the common sense play but if TB12 should happen to get to the SB again next year how incredibly egotistical and stupid will BB look?

AGAIN…BB has coached 26 years as an HC in the NFL. In that time he has a whopping ONE winning season and SIX losers WITHOUT BRADY!

The pressure cooker is getting hotter in Boston.

  16. Bruce Blahak Says:

The Bucs are champs and are staying the course, while other teams reload, dismantle and cut. I think the gap between the #1 Bucs and the rest of the league got wider this week!!!

is how you spell, DYNASTY! 🙂

  17. 6throundpick Says:

Before last season began, I was posting that TB12 is NOT broken, neither is Gronk and AB. This TB team would make a few runs- not just one. They’ve already made one run and won. I might say that the rest is gravy, but it is more than obvious, now, that more good stuff is going to happen. From here, it’s getting better, execution, and staying healthy.

Once again, this team’s potential was cut short by the Super Bowl (win). Imagine that. Nobody is going to rollover against TB this year. Improve or lose. Nothing is automatic. However, the team spirit is vibing. Time to play like winners. Do it for each other. No downs off. Look forward to every snap and win, win, win.

  18. Phil Collins Says:

The BUCS are simply the best at most things lately. From the OWNER, GM, HC, ALL THE OTHER COACHES, THE. QBs & The PHENOMENAL PLAYERS who aren’t tearing the team apart over money. Repeat ? No Doubt !!! The only QBs in the NFC good enough to stop them are 1-4 in Conference games and the other Tom already beat him in the SB. Can’t wait to see these guys with a spring training b4 the season. UNBELIEVABLE!!!#

  19. August 1976 Buc Says:

Very Uncommon sense is prevailing at 1 Buc Palace these days. 2021 is a Bucs World and all the other teams just happen to be living in it. 1-2-3 Dominate 2021 GO BUCS!!!!!!

  20. UKbuccaneer Says:

Repeating in the NFL is as big a challenge as there is. The odds are stacked against it. Baby steps back to a super bowl – The team is on the longest win streak in franchise history, let’s continue that, aim to win the south and return to the playoffs. Achievable goals. Then look for the Lombardi once we’re in the dance.

  21. Allbuccedup Says:

If the Dolphins trade for Watson send our 32nd pick for Tua!

  22. ManzielMadness Says:

BB will never be as inept as Lovie Smith but i think his FA signings has a similar feel lot the Bucs in 2014, when we went on a spending spree and signed Josh McCown, Alteraun Verner, Ghost Johnson, Anthony Collins, Mike Jenkins, Oniel cousins while tossing Darrell Revis overboard. Pats won’t be anywhere as bad but they are letting Joe Thuney and Stephen Gilmore go. Would not be surprised if they sh!t the bed this year.

  23. Joe Says:

BB will never be as inept as Lovie Smith

LOL No, that’s a special kind of inept.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

spbf: where have you been, guy?

  25. Louis Friend Says:

No offense Joe but I think of a lot of Tanier’s takes in the article are made off the cuff and mostly with sarcastic rants. Hard to take anything seriously when a writer spends that much article space spewing drivel.

  26. BucsCoolade Says:

Capology defies common sense… its complicated. Apparently bucs are good at it. Seems belichick is catching on also..
Pats- Bucs SB next year. Preview in foxboro regular season. That will be interesting..
