Additional Cash Emerges For Shaq Barrett

March 17th, 2021

Extra cash

One of the great scams in the world of NFL contracts is how the league and its union defines outside linebackers in a 3-4 defense and edge rushers in a 4-3 defense.

The positions are extremely similar, but for purposes of the franchise tag, all linebackers are lumped together — and so are all defensive ends. The problem is, defensive ends earn more money.

Last year, when Shaq Barrett got the franchise tag for the Bucs; he filed a grievance to say it was horse-poop that he was declared a linebacker in the Bucs’ 3-4 defense when he was playing the role of edge rusher like dudes in a 4-3 defense. Shaq wanted the bigger price tag afforded that position.

Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter moments ago, the Bucs settled with Shaq — and Joe suspects it quietly was among the terms of his new multiyear contract inked on Monday. To end the position dispute, Shaq got $1.4 million.

That should help Shaq with his Tesla shopping, thought it can’t be a good development for the Bucs’ salary cap.

By what time today do the bucs need to be under the cap?

  2. heckler number 4 Says:

Not so much a scam, as a position that hasn’t been addressed. A true DE like Simeon Rice is worth more than an Edge, which is worth more than a LB. They just need to make Edge a position

  3. ClodHopper Says:

Good for him! So he kinda got hosed twice on the franchise tag and he handled it with grace and dignity.

BTW, does that mean the oily agent got an extra almost 40k?

  4. Rob F Says:

If this was about his 2020 franchise tag, shouldn’t the extra $1.4 count against last year’s cap?

  5. Shane Johnston Says:

Rob F – It will, but any unused cap space can be brought forth for the following year. So technically it can count towards last year, but that is still 1.4 mil that they won’t have to work with this year

  6. Bird Says:

Jenna laine has pretty good connections at one buc

Apparently bucs are talking with all 4 remaining big names : suh , succop , brown and lenny

    Good to hear

  7. AMI_Chris Says:

Good for him! At least I can wear my Super Bowl Champions hat while I gripe about the salary cap. That hat makes just about everything better…

  8. Buxszntkt Says:

Clodhopper where did you get that #, $40k? Is that the standard commission , 3% for an agent ?

  9. ClodHopper Says:

    Bux

Just a quick Google search said NFL agents can’t get more than 3% and I assume the oily one gets the most.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. Bears offered three first-round picks, a third-rounder, and two starters for Russell Wilson…whoever made that offer should be fired.

Wilson is a great QB, but he not not worth mortgaging the future of a team. If they had gotten him, there would be no way to build around him and he’d be set up to fail.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Buxszntkt

NFL has rules on how much an agent can take.

  12. Buxszntkt Says:

Horrific news about those massage parlors in Georgia ! It says a white man was one of those shot. Does anyone know , is Bob Kraft ok, was he in Georgia ?

  13. Buxszntkt Says:

    Gotcha Clod & Bonzai, thanks

  14. Adrnagy Says:

This fool contract is the same @trent Williams. Over paid. Desperate.

  15. geno711 Says:

I am still pinching myself that we were able to get David, Godwin, Gronk and Shaq at fair deals. Keep the gang together.

How often do Super Bowl teams get to do this in todays day and age?
Great job by our front office – great commitment by the players as well.

This also helps for our draft in taking a best player available approach!

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Yes ot is a scam because Shaq lines up as an End whenever we use a 4 man front. Which is a lot of snaps ha ha ha

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Shaq will make All Pro this year. You can count on it.

  18. David Says:

53rd year in a row I’ve been a free agent and not one team is called, yet again! I’d like a settlement
