Decision Day For Aaron Stinnie

New deal!
Updated 3:37 p.m. – It’s official. Aaron Stinnie is back.
Terms of the deal haven’t yet leaked out.
Joe suspects the 2021 salary is somewhere around $2.5 million plus incentives — midway between the two restricted free agent tenders the Bucs could have slapped on their Super Bowl right guard before today’s 4 p.m. deadline.
General managers don’t gain massive respect for signing their quarterback’s good friends, but they do draw envious whispers around the NFL for wise signings that return massive dividends.
A great example of the latter at One Buc Palace is Stinnie.
What a beast he was making his first four career starts in the playoffs. He was fantastic under major pressure.
Undrafted out of James Madison in 2018, Stinnie hung around the Titans for two seasons but was waived in November of 2019. Bucs general manager Jason Licht pounced on the waiver claim and, thankfully, no eligible team was ahead of him in line.
Stinnie finally got the starting call in January 2021, and Licht’s signing shined on the big stages.
That’s way more impressive to Joe than signing Antonio Brown, Tom Brady or trading for Rob Gronkowski.
Stinnie turned 27 last month and now has hefty raise. The deadline for the Bucs to slap a tender on him was this afternoon.

Does Stinnie also play Center? If so he might be worth the $2 million. We have absolutely zero offensive line depth at the moment.

We have an expensive O line, but they earned it this year. Hope they can get some contracts re-worked to keep this guy and a few others.

Keep the stud. Cappa has shown a tendency to break his bones, so Stinnie could end up starting a lot.

Like Stinnie, but there are quite a few replacement level OL like him on the market right now that can likely be had for the same money or less. The team likely has a $$ number they’re targeting for the backup G/C spot (don’t believe Stinnie plays center, which is why he wasn’t active when Cappa first went down), and if Stinnie agrees to play for it all the better. Other guys out there though if he moves on.

Find a way to keep the man. Dude held his own in championship and ab games. It’s really not that easy to just stumble across a guy like that. Look at how much olinemen are making these days….

I like the 2nd round tender approach. He will be the best back up offensive lineman that we have next year so he is worth that tender.
He produced in the biggest games – can never minimize that.
Sure other back ups are available, but then we are just hoping they can produce if needed in big games. We saw how well that worked for Green Bay and KC.
Obviously cannot have a lot of backup offensive lineman at 3.4 million or more but one such guy is fine if he is the next man up on a 5 position offensive line.

Saw the Chiefs cut a former starting RB….I think the market will have plenty of quality replacements for Fournette. I think you preserve the depth at o-line….but Licht has been solid at finding linemen from all over the place. We should be fine either way.

He was awesome, but we gotta start building depth and future starters in the draft. Jason Licht finds guys on waivers and in the gutter and UDFA that come in and play big. Every year it feels like. He’s a great scout in FA and the draft.

Last year was a prime example of the importance of depth along both the offensive and defensive lines. We are flush with recieving options. Signing Antonio Brown should not be a priority.
Suh and Stinnie on the other hand are big priorities. I would think they’ll tender Stinnie at the very least, unless they feel really confident in their scouting department to find more guys like him. Suh will either sign fast and get it out of the way or he’ll sit free for a couple weeks without a care in the world.

@BucEmUp…The issue isn’t Cappa’s play. The issue is money. Donovan Smith and Ryan Jensen deals are up next year. Carlton Davis is in line for a payday as well. Vita is coming due. Someone is going to be the odd man out. You can’t pay 3 offensive lineman 10 plus million a season without taking from another position group. That’s technically a good thing, because that means they did a good job team building.

This draft has an unusually high number interior offensive line prospects. I’d like to see a couple of them taken. I think Cappa is a decent starting RG, but he’ll want to be paid after his contract expires after this coming season. Jensen is good, but he’s drawing a $10 million salary which is very high for a Center. At the very least Licht should strongly consider taking two interior offensive linemen in this draft on Day 2/early Day 3. No complaints about Stinnie in the postseason, he came up big, but I fee like we’re getting carried away here. He’s a career practice backup and practice squad guy who works hard to keep a minimum salary in this league. Instead of paying him $1.5 million over the minimum, save that money to help pad a contract for Antonio Brown.

Licht isn’t the kind of guy to miss a guy he really wants for a few spots, or over draft a guy he thinks is too high. I greatly respect that.

The fact that we are worried about Stinnie is great news. Licht got us back Shaq, David and Godwin. He took most of our worry away.
If we lose Stinnie I have confidence they will get a suitable replacement. The mesh of Licht and the OL coaches has done a very nice job. Stinnie is a example of this, Haeg, Shipley,ect.

Brady hates pressure straight up the middle ( which QB doesn’t ). Stinnie or will be called upon in 2021 would be my guess. He’s stout.

Bigger news, OJ is back. Wasn’t sure if they’d do it or not, but his contract became guaranteed at 4pm if he wasn’t cut.
Well, they could still trade him too.
Lots of uncertainty on OJ, but I found this that explains it…
“The tender for the 2016 and ’17 classes is guaranteed for injury only and becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap and injury if the player is on the active roster at the start of the league year of his fifth (the option) season.”
So I’m guessing they’re going to put the squeeze on Brate – or they know they can trade OJ for something of value. Which, they should be able to. He’s only making $6m, and at worst he’s as good as Hunter Henry who just signed for $13m. Personally I think they need to keep him, if he can ever stay healthy, he’s going to be a monster. Also if something happens to Gronk, the last thing you want is to have to have Brate starting, he can’t block and can’t get open versus 1st string defenders, he’s good against backups, and obviously has good hands (unless the game is on the line like against Houston), but he’s not starting material.

Agree with everything except for one thing. Beats starting isn’t the worst thing to happen. Not sure where the notion he can’t get open vs starters comes from. When given looks the dude has no problem in the playoffs.. always produced when given the opportunities. Is he super athletic? No.. just seems to have a knack for finding soft spots and has fantastic hands. You’re right that he’s not much of a blocker. Can put him with Auclair when blocking is needed or that extra tackle.
Hope you’re right about OJ. We all know the speed and size so there, can he stay healthy though? Here is hoping he’s learning a thing or two about taking care of your body from Brady and some of the other leaders we have on offense

One thing I would worry about with brate though… He already wasn’t the most athletic and will another year and that hip surgery slow him further? Seemed solid enoguh in playoffs though. Was rare seeing him catch a screen in the sb

Coburn – Brate brought the offense to a stop in 2016 when he was forced to produce when everyone was getting injured at the end of the year, when defenses focused on him, he could not get open. In the playoffs, he wasn’t being defended by top guys, Gronk was still the focus. Nothing wrong with that, that’s how you should do things, exploit other teams with your depth – but if that depth is starting, you’re in trouble.
I’m not anti-Brate, but he’s way overvalued by most people. He is basically a depth WR with limited blocking ability. Sort of like Humphries, he’s a guy who thrives playing against other teams backups or depth players.
Ideally he takes a pay cut and sticks around – but I’m not sure how you have Gronk at $8-10m, and Brate at $6.5m and OJ at $6m. If OJ is healthy, Brate is your #3 TE. Obviously the issue there is *IF* OJ can stay healthy.

Also rumors say the Jags are getting calls about Gardner Minshew – the Bucs should be making that call. There is no way that Minshew isn’t better than Gabbert, and should be as cheap as it gets. I have no idea what teams would give up for him, but I’m in if it’s like a 5th or 6th rounder. Also you’re getting 2 years of dirt cheap, not just one.

I’m not Minshew truther, but I think he is better than Gabbert – mainly because I think Gabbert is trash.
Something I didn’t realize is that the NFL at some point changed the rules so that veteran players cap hit is the same as younger players, even if their pay is actually higher. I had never heard of this – so Gabbert got $1.2m, but his cap hit was only $880k – so I was factoring in the team saving money, but apparently that isn’t the case.
So that was my main argument, saving some money and getting, in my opinion, an upgrade – but without the money saving I agree, it would be hard to give up a pick, even the comp 6th rounder.

Cappa and Stinnie are average guards with both have above average ceilings. They just need another year experience. Glad to have them both battle it out.
To be honest, Stinnie looks like a beast. The dude has some broad shoulders. Cappa looks scrappy but he does a good job with his leverage and can throws around some big Defensive linemen. Those two, along with Marpet can open up some big holes for the RB. I think most teams envy Tampa’s offensive line.

Jason Licht has been an absolute stud when it comes to finiding value at the Oline position, pretty damn good across the board but I have been impressed with his ability to draft lineman.
Luckily Licht cannot be stolen by another team for a higher position….only higher pay and I dont see what happening anytime soon.
I hope he drafts a qb that Tom Brady chooses and Brady returns to coach but this is great for now…Glad they kept this kid he is good!
