Example Of Shaq Barrett’s Value
March 15th, 2021If there was no salary cap to worry about and Joe told you T.J. Watt was available as a free agent and wanted to play for the Bucs, fans would likely say, “Give him a blank check.”
Yet the Bucs already have Watt. They just re-signed him.
Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports lays out the numbers that Shaq is basically the NFC’s version of Watt, the Steelers’ Pro Bowl edge rusher.
Only two players in the #NFL have 20+ sacks, 50+ QB hits, and 8+ forced fumbles over the past two seasons:

Joe is just blown away by the fact Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht got Shaq at such a discount, $18 million a year. Shaq’s agent, oily Drew Rosenhaus, usually drives a harder bargain.
This is just fantastic news all around. It makes Joe want to make a beeline to Hooters and shovel wings in his grille and chug Big Storm beer, which is available at local Hooters in the Tampa Bay area.
What a day!!!

Shaq wanted to come back. He also just wanted security. Dude has been on 1 year deals almost his entire career.
Now he’s got some stability, more guaranteed money that ever previously, AND stays on a team with a good shot to repeat!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:11 pm
Joe
Agree. Some people are clueless
And that is tj watt. Not jj watt like some people think.
If tj was a free agent he would be offered 25 -30 mil per year
Its 17 mil with extra 1 mil if shaq meets escalators to get 18
And only first 2 years guaranteed 36 total
So he will be age 30.
Such a team friendly deal its amazing
March 15th, 2021 at 1:12 pm
This is an amazing off season. As a fan, I will never care about the salary cap again. The only exception is if we’re millions under or if were in the same hell the Saints are in this year. Things can be done!!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:14 pm
Shaq will bring back Suh. This has multiple effects
March 15th, 2021 at 1:17 pm
Joe,
Why don’t you try a good beer like [You should know better than to try to slip in something like that — Joe] with those wings, I think you will be more satisfied and you deserve that today !
March 15th, 2021 at 1:18 pm
ClodHopper, we will be in cap hell when Brady retires ! We have to enjoy the next two years , after that we go into rebuild and cap hell mode !
March 15th, 2021 at 1:18 pm
Thanks Bird!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:18 pm
Because sponsorships
March 15th, 2021 at 1:21 pm
Shaq leads in sacks the 31.5 last 2 years, and would have 2 more without Mahomeboys crazy gymnastics on a couple of throws in the Super Bowl. GO BUCS!!!!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:22 pm
I can’t believe we got him back for that cheap lol. Then again he also is giving himself flexibility for a bigger deal in a better market if he is still playing well in his 30s.
Glad to have left Denver finally this year to join Shaq lol. Couldn’t be a better time to be back home.
GO BUCS!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:23 pm
They probably figure that when Brady retires, they’ll have a drafted qb on a rookie deal, which means that the savings there can cover the dead cap money. Then when it comes time to hopefully pay that qb, they be free of all this cap-hit delaying moves. Plus, the cap will likely be close to $250 million in 2-3 years, so that gives them some breathing room there.
Plus hopefully pick up another Super Bowl win or two along the way.
March 15th, 2021 at 1:24 pm
Crazy how good Bucs are doing and how poorly the Patriots are doing.
So last year, NE invests two 3rd round picks in tight ends. Then this year in free agency spends 50 million on a slightly better than average tight end.
Also, obviously picked up a broken down Cam Newton last year and it failed. Then this year, they double down on the broken down signing him again.
March 15th, 2021 at 1:28 pm
There is no question that Shaq wanted Tampa……he could have squeezed a couple more million, easily.
Thank you, Shaq…….others take notice…..Suh, Gronk, Succop
March 15th, 2021 at 1:31 pm
Shaq was gonna go on Naked & Afraid to make up for money lost. He was staying here regardless
March 15th, 2021 at 1:33 pm
Who is left to sign and can we ?
March 15th, 2021 at 1:33 pm
My otherwise bleak day is now a little brighter
March 15th, 2021 at 1:34 pm
I’m dieng to see our pass rush destroy Jameis Wiston and make him choke on a W
March 15th, 2021 at 1:34 pm
The Bucs can afford to do these deals because of their smart cap management to date. Before these deals they were top 5 in cap space for 2022 and 2023. Per, Sportrac, they are still in the top 13 or 14 in salary cap space for those years. There is no “cap hell” on the horizon for this team, even with backloading a few deals.
Our friends in Atlanta and New Orleans are not so lucky- they still rank in the bottom five for both of those years!
March 15th, 2021 at 1:38 pm
how much do the Bucs have left $$
We still MUST have
AB
Gronk
Suh
Succoup
All must signs!
and we need a GOOD RB if we can’t keep Lenny and pay draft picks.
How much is left $$??
March 15th, 2021 at 1:42 pm
After the Shaq deal it looks like the bucs have somewhere around 8 million left in cap space right now. Subtract 2 million for draft picks and the bucs have roughly 6 million to work with right now.
March 15th, 2021 at 1:43 pm
we can add 6 6mill by cutting OJ right?
March 15th, 2021 at 1:46 pm
Suh might be the odd man out unless they get some others to restructure.
I would hate to not sign Succoup AB and Gronk……and that would probably be ore than the 12 million right there!
March 15th, 2021 at 2:05 pm
Why there was ever any doubt as to Shaq’s value, I will never know. That said, he is right where he belongs, on the precipice of another title run.
Lets get these other FAs into the fold ASAP. We’re going to lose one or two. I’d do what I can to keep Gronk, Succop, and Suh.
March 15th, 2021 at 2:09 pm
The cap will balloon next year. Imagine what his price would have been in 2022.
March 15th, 2021 at 2:11 pm
The Lightning model is to sell players on living in a hockey paradise, plus the lack of state taxes and a lower cost of living means you’re actually making MORE money by staying for less…
March 15th, 2021 at 2:13 pm
wait…we gotta have more than 6 million in cap space…
#GiveMeAyeHole #GiveMeSomeCapSpace
March 15th, 2021 at 2:14 pm
Now rework a few more vets, get Suh, Gronk, Succop, AB done, then add James White and draft Etienne.
I won’t be sober the entire season watching how much better this team will be then.
March 15th, 2021 at 2:16 pm
players likely gone…
freeing up cap space…
grif

March 15th, 2021 at 2:18 pm

@Robert Says:

not much, not after we signed the great ShB. is going to cost us other players….
March 15th, 2021 at 2:39 pm
…CG + ShB ~ 33.5 to 34 mil, two players ONLY. Not sure what is left for the rest of FA, and the rest of the team. $180M – $33.5M = $146.5M…. that is what is left for 51 players. Was the deal worth it??? will see….
March 15th, 2021 at 2:39 pm
There are a lot of formulas they run with this contract. Top tier state income tax rate in NY state is 8.5%, 7.5% this does not count county and city taxes like in NYC. Just signing bonuse alone he probably is paying $2.5-5m less in taxes. Through in cost of living etc. There may be a little friendly in the deal but it’s not as huge as you may think.
March 15th, 2021 at 4:54 pm
So glad we didn’t pay 23 a year
March 16th, 2021 at 4:20 am
It awesome the buccaneers were able to resign Shaq Barret #58 I just bought that jersey before the superbowl no regrets!
