Former Agent: Shaq Barrett Worth $22 Million A Year

A former NFL agent has seen the production from Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett over the past two seasons. And because of that production, this former agent believes Shaq will “break the bank” on the open market.
The former agent would be Joel Corry of CBS Sports. He says Shaq is worth some $22 million a year if he gets to free agency. And Corry is basing this number on an established contract in the NFL. Look no further than Dallas pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence.
Contract package: $110 million, five years ($22 million per year)
Overall guarantees: $68 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $50 million
First three years: $68 millionBarrett avoided a second franchise tag for $18,993,600 because Tampa Bay gave the designation instead to wide receiver Chris Godwin. Retaining Barrett is a priority for the Buccaneers.
Nobody expected Barrett to duplicate his 2019 season in which he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks. This was also the case with DeMarcus Lawrence in 2018 after his breakout 2017 season with 14.5 sacks led to a franchise tag. Lawrence ultimately signed a five-year, $105 million contract containing $65 million in guarantees ($48 million fully guaranteed) with the Cowboys in 2019 after getting a second franchise player designation.
Barrett had eight sacks in 2020 but comparable quarterback pressures (combined sacks, quarterback hurries and quarterback hits) as in 2019 according to Pro Football Focus. His 77 pressures, which were the league’s second-most, were five fewer than his 2019 total. Barrett saved his best football for last. He had four sacks and 21 pressures in four playoff games.
Unlike Lawrence, Shaq has balled out in the playoffs and Super Bowl. So yeah, if the Bucs can get Shaq for $20 million a year, Joe thinks that might be getting over on Shaq’s agent oily Drew Rosenhaus.

Alex is right. Not worth the 3 or 4 members of the band we’d lose at that salary. Let him walk and sign everyone else. I trust Licht to find a very good replacement at half the price. We’ll be fine.

Let him go on the Bucs we have players that love it there and not chasing money. Shaq had 19.5 sack last year will JPP came back, because teams doubled on JPP, Shaq made Pro bowl. This year Shaq only had 8 sacks and he didn’t make Pro bowl but JPP did. We have the best quarterback ever on our team and he redid his contract to resign players to win championships. Let Shaq go he can be replace. Just how we made him we can made another player.

Sign Shaq, keep the dominant defensive front 7 intact. GO BUCS!!! The window is open now, for a 3-4 year championship run. Only 2 other times in 44 years have there been a window of opportunity for a Championship. 1979-82 and 1997-2002 As I said before, teams make runs, but no one stays on top forever, when you have a chance at the big dance, you go all out. The Bucs should extend and sign their players. This is the year to take advantage of little cap room most teams have. Next year when the cap goes up 30 to 40 million, they will be paying players a whole lot more.

The equation is simple.
The Bucs have players who want to repeat and are willing to sacrifice dollars to free cap space and allow the team to “keep the band together.” But they have one player intent on “breaking the bank.” Some players chase dollars and some chase rings. Nothing wrong with that, but overpaying players does not lead to championships.
If Shaq’s sole goal is to line his pockets, let him line them elsewhere. Asking a guy to play for a “measly” 15 million a year might seem like an insult to poor Shaq. How could he possibly survive on such a paltry sum?

Agree with JA. It will hurt losing him. Agree with the notion it’s one of the most important positions after qb, but we have another 23 guys to sign and a few of those are very important, like Gronk. We sign Shaq and all we can afford is 23 at vet minimum and still probably gotta cut/restructure to get rookies signed and a small operating fund for the season. Maybe for 17-18 with some backloaded contract. JA is right that nobody should complain about 15mil and a ring. For most people that means their grandkids wouldn’t want for anything.

20 mil a year for a player that is not the qb is crazy…… how many times has a team put a ton of money in one player and not be able to sign depth and quality players around him only for that player to get hurt or not play at the same level

He was paid $16 million last year with the tag. Salaries go up, not down. If $20 million is the going rate who are we to say he shouldn’t be paid fairly?
It’s utterly ridiculous to think that Shaq Barrett was not an integral part of that defense ALL YEAR LONG. His sack #s fell but he was one of the best in the league applying pressure on QBs.
Yeah, it would be nice to be able to sign him for less but lets not diminish his value. He earned it.
I can’t understand why fans begrudge a player for getting fair pay (NFL-wise) for their position and production. It ain’t your money anyways!

I don’t think that Shaq is worth 22 million per year, but it’s not my money either. Lawrence has only 11.5 sacks since “breaking the bank” so you gotta be careful who you let hit the lotto. If we have a backdoor to get out of the deal in 2 years when we start blowing things up, then 22 per doesn’t look as bad.

People thinking Shaq wouldn’t be insulted and fly the coop in response to an offer for less than he would make if he were tagged crack me up. If he would be paid 18+ under the tag, then a smidge above that is the negotiating floor, and even starting at the floor could easily be considered an insult. I agree with what a lot of folks have said, that Shaq is worth between 19 and 21 million, and he’ll get it.
