“Everywhere He Goes The Defense Becomes Good Immediately”
March 6th, 2021Earlier in the week, Joe passed along a story floated by NFL.com that maybe the Bucs might be interested in bringing back one of their own.
Long-time defensive tackle Gerald McCoy left the Bucs two years ago and is a free agent, and Nick Shook of NFL.com thinks a reunion shouldn’t be dismissed.
This concept does not sit well with former Bucs guard and current popular local radio personality Ian Beckles. A long-time if not outspoken critic of GMC, Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” and explained what a lousy idea this is.
“The Buccaneers are going to want to bring back Ndamukong Suh,” Beckles said. “Ndamukong Suh is a model citizen that plays great and plays every single game, plays every game hard and doesn’t miss a snap. Everywhere he goes the defense becomes good immediately.
“You can hold onto Gerald McCoy all you want. But Gerald McCoy has literally never equated to anything. Not a statistic. Not a good defense. Not a win. Not nothin.’
“You Gerald McCoy fans, when you look back on it, they took his captaincy away (when with the Bucs). I have never seen that.”
GMC has faded fast the past couple of years. While Suh is not the same player he once was, he is a total rock as a run-stopper and still has enough gas in the tank and plays with a sharp edge that allows him to harass quarterbacks.
In the regular season win over the Packers, there was no question Suh was in Aaron Rodgers’ head. And in the Super Bowl when Shaq Barrett wasn’t chasing Pat Mahomes, Suh was slamming him to the turf.
Joe personally cannot see GMC coming back to the Bucs, despite the fact he still lives in Tampa.
As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

GMC is the type of player coming off injury who will see little demand in this market. For a one year deal in the $1 to $2m range I would think he could help us as a 3-4 end.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:13 am
I could see him coming back…but never to replace Suh.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:17 am
Rumor has it, GMC carried a swear jar around the locker room when he was here. #STIB
March 6th, 2021 at 8:19 am
GMC has faded fast since he left Tampa, so I really doubt we bring him back.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:19 am
Go away Mccoy
March 6th, 2021 at 8:20 am
I see him coming back to the bucs….on a one day contract to retire. Until then, we have no need for him when we can draft a young DT to groom for less.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:32 am
Let’s bury the myth of McCoy effectiveness.
I don’t want anything soft in that locker room.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:45 am
If we can get him as a Mclendon or Nunes Roches replacement…….OK…depth piece on the Dline….OK….
March 6th, 2021 at 8:56 am
@tbbf: McCoy is done. He cannot stay healthy.
March 6th, 2021 at 8:58 am
“You can hold onto Gerald McCoy all you want. But Gerald McCoy has literally never equated to anything. Not a statistic. Not a good defense. Not a win. Not nothin.’
Been saying that for years. He was utterly forgettable and un-scary.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:04 am
its nice to see that people are finally saying the truth about McCoy. At his peak he was a disappointment, now he’d be a liability
March 6th, 2021 at 9:05 am
Beckles has it right!
March 6th, 2021 at 9:06 am
Don’t forget about the Brady effect.
GMC will come back and develop the killer instinct he never had before because of Tom Brady.
What? It could happen!
March 6th, 2021 at 9:09 am
Everywhere he goes the defense gets better AFTER he leaves. Fixed the headline for you.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:10 am
I always liked McCoy, he never had any talent on the line with him. That said I have to agree with Beckles. Suh is much better right now, is never injured and… just won the damn Super Bowl!!. Try to sign everyone back possible
March 6th, 2021 at 9:10 am
It’s not GMC’s fault he’s overrated.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:11 am
Posters are letting their disappointment with GMC as a highly paid 1st round draft pick starter….get to their good common sense.
OF course as a backup depth piece at a vet minimum or close price….GMC would be worth it. He wants to play, lives in Tampa….
I really don’t care that much….either way.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:18 am
Keep that soft serve cancer as far way from this group of winners as possible.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:19 am
Man, you all still refuse to admit how good he was. Oh well lol, jaded fans are jaded. Played on 8-10 lines filled with college level talent. I totally agree the leader attitude was lacking, but the way you all act like he is the reason we sucked blows my mind
March 6th, 2021 at 9:22 am
Not a fan of this. Do you see Kimono wearing ice cream man improving or meshing with the current TB12 locker room culture they have going? Wish him the best, not with the Bucs.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:33 am
Let’s bring back GMC and then let’s sign Josh Freeman while we’re at it. Resurrect the glory years.
March 6th, 2021 at 9:40 am
No… just no
March 6th, 2021 at 9:54 am
Ain’t gonna happen but it’s fun talking point!
March 6th, 2021 at 10:16 am
Joe sure knows how to stoke……how ’bout this….let’s bring in JW as a backup (3rd QB) like Saints….
March 6th, 2021 at 10:22 am
Tbbf
I’d rather have a rookie udfa as a “depth piece” than a washed up, soft, culture killing McCoy. At least they would have future potential.
McCoy is done and he knows it, just looking to tag a long now….
March 6th, 2021 at 10:31 am
Who would wear #93 Suh or McCoy?
March 6th, 2021 at 10:31 am
From the second Bruce walked in the door i knew it was gonna work. He was here to win at any cost. His first order of business? Send Gerald packing. Thats about all I need to know about the situation to know that McCoy doesnt fit here at all.
March 6th, 2021 at 10:36 am
Maybe Gerald can come back as a coach. The league is calling more and more pentalties for hitting too hard. Gerald can teach the D how to hit more softly.
March 6th, 2021 at 10:37 am
After experiencing this defense the past two years, McCoy is as enticing as melted ice cream.
Ice cream man is a thing of the past.
I LOVE THIS DEFENSE!!!!
March 6th, 2021 at 10:42 am
Gerald McCoy is the softest player in NFL history. He only cares about TV time .Worthless.
March 6th, 2021 at 10:53 am
Hey if he is down to it for little compensation he can ride with the Bucs one special time but he would be depth not starting gig. But maybe it happens and I would see that as an upset.
March 6th, 2021 at 11:30 am
McCoy doesn’t play 3-4, said so himself. He has fun losing, we aren’t that team anymore.
March 6th, 2021 at 1:16 pm
Enough about Softie McCoy. A veteran minimum contract for him is still too much.
March 6th, 2021 at 1:33 pm
Whoa. Holy smokes. Call 911. Help me Oprah. Help me Tom Cruise: I agree with Ian Beckles 100%.
March 6th, 2021 at 1:40 pm
I’m not so sure there’s many Gerald fans left in these parts. I defended him when he was a Buc but realize it was mostly out of loyalty.
March 6th, 2021 at 1:42 pm
Joe, please stop triggering Howard with the McCoy posts.
Glazers have to understand that they owe McCoy nothing and he owes them millions and that intelligent fans see McCoy for what he is.
Tea Macks was right!
March 6th, 2021 at 2:19 pm
I’m sure Gerald McCoy is a nice guy, so I won’t pile on him. As far as what the Bucs need for the 2021 season, McCoy isn’t on the list.
March 6th, 2021 at 2:36 pm
As a long time bucs fan I have to say this ridiculous. McCoy was a beast on the line. You dont accumulate 6 pro-bowls, 3 first team all-pros, and a second team all-pros without being dominant. So it’s clear he “EQUATED” to something. If the bucs won in his tenure then he would’ve been a household name. Y’all trip’n!!!!
March 6th, 2021 at 2:53 pm
Tie goes to the ring. Suh.
March 6th, 2021 at 3:32 pm
When was Gerald McCoy dominant? The only play i can remember he made was a qb hurry on matty melts like ice Ryan on a forth down play not even a sack to end the game ever only missed tackles and always out of his gap like the all pro he supposedly was hahahaha what a joke of a 4rth tier player.
March 6th, 2021 at 4:12 pm
By “tie” Howard is assuming you mean that Suh has made every defense he’s been on a lot better, whereas McCoys presence has correlated with a bad defense everywhere he goes.
Padding personal stats while dragging down those around you non-existent leadership. Literally having your captains patch torn off by the Bucs LOL
Making McCoy the face of the franchise, however briefly was an example of the Glazers at their most inept. Howard is glad they finally turned things over to Arians
March 6th, 2021 at 4:19 pm
As someone said earlier:
“Suh would smack the ice cream cone out of softies hand in the parking lot” LOL. Gosh, that makes an awesome visual
March 6th, 2021 at 4:23 pm
Oh yes……. we had the cancer cut out.
Now…..
Hey Doc, I felt a lot better but do you think you could put that cancer back where you found it?
Brilliant
March 6th, 2021 at 6:44 pm
I wanted Suh more in the draft and nothing has changed since then.
March 6th, 2021 at 7:11 pm
Seems this professional football 🏈 player has met the end of his career, time to walk away. According to fans opinions, his presence is not wanted any more. Time has arrived to say Goodbye. Adios Amigo !
☮️ Peace, and Tranquility to all of us.
Sincerely,
VatsugZE61
March 6th, 2021 at 10:24 pm
Wouldn’t mind seeing them bring in Kawaan Short if Suh does go.
March 6th, 2021 at 11:28 pm
Yes. Agree. A fill in back up role at a discounted price would be fitting.
He was a beast but that was in his prime.
He has an injury issue and an age issue and a consistency issue.
Maybe better not to take a roster spot.
March 7th, 2021 at 12:13 pm
Dewey, while the article’s main image is of McCoy, the headline is attributed to Suh. Thanks for letting us all didn’t bother to read it.
