Joe Montana: There’s Only One Goat And He Plays For The Bucs

March 4th, 2021

“Keep playing Tom.”

Joe’s favorite quarterback and one of the greatest to ever lace them up, Joe Montana, was on BSPN to talk, what else?

Football and park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

Joe used to believe Montana was the farm animal fans seem like to talk about. Joe saw Montana in his prime and watching Montana slice up defenses was the football version of watching Eddie Van Halen toy with a guitar or Francis Ford Coppola direct “The Godfather.”

Montana was a master artist at work.

And Joe always thought the road Montana took to four Super Bowls made Brady’s path (until this year) a joke. Montana had to go through the Bears and Mike Ditka, the Giants and Bill Parcells, the Redskins and Joe Gibbs.

Brady had to get past the Jets and Adam Gase.

Oh, and 4-0 without an interception in four Super Bowls was pretty awesome.

That all changed for Joe when Brady led the Bucs through a murderer’s row of Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers both on the road, and then past Pat Mahomes for the Super Bowl title. Only a fool would argue Brady was still second class to Montana.

Montana said he’s looking up at Brady, and he’s well aware of the G.O.A.T. debate.

“Oh, I think Tom has taken his place on the top up there a long time ago,” Montana said … “He’s had a tremendous career, he’s fun to watch.”

“… If you look at what Tom’s been able to accomplish in his time that he’s played, I think it puts him definitely up there in the top of the list.”

Yesterday Joe brought word that Brady’s wife, Gisele Bündchen, may be trying to get her husband to retire after the Super Bowl.

Montana’s advice to Brady: Keep playing until the wheels fall off.

“Play as long as you can, as long as you can physically,” he said. “And keep going.”

Montana admits he is still angry he retired from the Chiefs after the 1994 season with a year left on his contract. He was beaten up physically but he said he almost immediately regretted his decision.

Watching football for the first two years of his retirement was troubling, Montana said, adding once a quarterback retires, that’s it. There’s no turning back.

So Montana encourages Brady to squeeze every drop out of that lemon. The way Brady played last year, he’s still got juice!

Joe Montana, Steve Young……………both of these 49ers greats could’ve 100% played longer but chose not to.

Andrew Luck still is shocking retired at such a young age…….I think his injuries was worse than he let the public believe

or he just simply had enough?????

Good story Joe, different era’s hard to compare , read a great story in a ny online rag about Brady the next morning after the bowl calling clyde Christensen to say congrats because Brady had not seen him after the game , and Brady wanted to talk about some changes to improve in certain areas for the 2021 season. Doesn`t sound like a guy that’s ready to hang it up. THE NEXT MORNING , WOW , used to hate the pats and him , but gotta love a guy like this. Just want to thank the Joe’s for this great forum to express our views.

Brady is the best QB ever. And no one can EVER tell his story without mentioning the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers!!!!

The Glazers immortalized this franchise with that move.

TB is Ring of Honor. Tampa must rename a street Tom Brady away (even if the road is not technically a “way”). And I bet there is not a Bucs game for the next 20 years where at least one fan wears a TB 12 Bucs jersey.

  4. BA4President Says:

As a Bucs fan, and therefore a Brady fan, hearing Montana talk about his retirement with such honesty makes my heart happy.

Wisdom = Using the shared experiences and learned lessons of others to help guide your decision making

Don’t let Montana’s regrets live in vein Tom!!! Learn from them! And skip OTA’s, workouts, etc. to be with your family. Us Bucs fans don’t give a sh** as long as you can make it back for training camp!!

    TAMPA LOVES TOM!!!!

    @ModHairKEn,

Agreed. Hope we have more Lombardis to attach to our team and Tom Brady. If we win again next season, bet on Brady going for 10 Super Bowl wins.

That dude is psycho, he will go after 10 if he gets #8.

  6. lambchop Says:

    Joe Montana – 1b.

I can’t even slide him to #2, but it’s getting easier and easier to let him slide. Joe Cool was my favorite player too. But, honestly, except in Tampa, Tom has done much more with a LOT less on offense. Add the fact that he won again on the first year with a new team, new coach, no pre-season? It’s not even a debate. Although, Joe almost did it as well with the Chiefs if it wasn’t for Bruce Smith and those pesky Bills.

I think I have over 200 of Joe’s cards, except the prized Rookie card; back when I actually collected cards.

  7. DingleBerry Says:

It should come as no surprise that the guy who has repeatedly said that he actively went out of his way to avoid watching Brady and The Patriots, whether it was the regular season, playoffs or the Super Bowl… is the same guy who refused to acknowledge that Brady is the best there ever was.

Come to think of it, how could even begin to make a comparison in your mind of who had the tougher road to travel if you literally didnt watch Brady at all? You really are in no position to have an opinion one way or the other, at least not an informed one.

Also Brady has been playing against and beating the best teams the league has to offer year after year, in the post season and in the Super Bowl. You simply cannot assert that Brady had it easy when he’s literally been to the biggest stage 10 times and won 7 of them.

  8. Ben green Says:

Joe knows he lost that title 2 superbowls ago. Brady also has doubled title game appearances with 14. This was an argument, but TB12 besides being the best qb to ever do it maybe the best football player ever. The best pure player of the position is steve young for my money, he won something stupid like 5 passing titles in a row. And when he retired was the all time leader in passer rating, but for the hershel walker trade, he wins at least 4 maybe 5 lombardis

  9. PassingThru Says:

What makes Brady’s accomplishments even more amazing is that he pulled his multiple Super Bowl victories off in the salary cap era. As everyone here is painfully aware, the salary cap is what forces parity (and it guarantees a profit to each and every owner no matter how inept they are). Montana, Young, Staubach, Bradshaw, etc. never had to face the obstacle of having their team dismantled after every season.

  10. Youngbucs Says:

PassingThru good point also the QBs mentioned played with how many hof receivers it’s crazy.

  11. Bird Says:

Brady (himself) has the highest winning percentage of all the 4 major sports leagues of all time.

Brady goes to the bucs who had worst winning percentage of all the 4 major sports leagues of all time.

And he wins a super bowl in his first year on our previous yet beloved cursed team

And its great to see the haters compare him to brad johnson being an average qb coming to the best defense and being more a role player and not really leader who deserves the credit. 😂

And compare him to robert horry who won more titles. Cause robert horry was not even a top 5 player on a team of 11 players and was lucky to maybe average 10 points a game for his career. Who was a rotational 3 point shooter his only specialty. But yah. Thats so much like brady. 😂

Oh and this super bowl was not worth it cause its just a quick fix and he is short term only answer. It was a mistake. Cause we would rather be last in our division for the last decade with previous situations. 😂

    —-
The level of cluelessness is truly amazing
And yah. You know who you are. No need to use the poster name / names

  12. 6throundpick Says:

Joe was the best in his era. It’s hard to compare eras; different rules, different game, etc… I don’t like it when players from different eras are compared; not accurate. However, playing in a few ears and winning consistently? It’s outstanding. No one has done it that well. And there have been other outstanding players. Brady is unique. Brady is a winner. Brady brings winning with him and spreads it around; a team guy.

  13. Buc50 Says:

Different eras, different rules but 10 Super Bowls by any measure is incredible. Love Montana but Brady is the undisputed GOAT.

  14. Bucs Bro Says:

I’ve never bought into the Montana is the GOAT mindset.

In his 4 Super Bowl’s his defenses gave up 21,16,16 and 10 points. Also he did it in the non Salary Cap era, where teams could keep a stacked roster together for years.

What Brady has done in the cap era, and for two different franchises puts him in a class all by himself.

  15. Joe Says:

I’ve never bought into the Montana is the GOAT mindset.

    Did you see him play???

The quarterback who really gets overlooked is Roger Staubach. He may have been Montana’s equal. Joe HATED the Cowboys back then (still don’t like them but the hate has subsided some over the years) but Staubach was freaking lethal.

  16. Natron Says:

Yup, at this point ,TB is the GOAT by a wide margin. I wish he had won that SB game against the the Giants to complete the perfect season. The Pats were the best team that season by a mile.

  17. Buc50 Says:

LOL…Montana’s 49ers bashed the Broncos with 55 points. Joe Cool was the GOAT. He had a great defense but his footwork and ball placement back in the day was unmatched.

  18. WillieG Says:

“And Joe always thought the road Montana took to four Super Bowls made Brady’s path (until this year) a joke. Montana had to go through the Bears and Mike Ditka, the Giants and Bill Parcells, the Redskins and Joe Gibbs.“

You’re comparing Montana’s playoff opponents to Brady’s regular season opponents. Why don’t you compare apples to apples?

If I remember correctly, Montana was also in a pretty sorry division just as Brady was. And Brady had to face the Colts, Steelers, Raiders, and other damn good teams once he got into the playoffs.

  19. Mr. B Says:

I always thought it was Joe until this year. What Brady did this year was the stuff of epic legends. A true leader an ultimate goat !

  20. A. C. Stackpole Says:

FACT: Teams Play The Schedule They Are Given. The 49ers Division, When Montana Was Playing Was Decidedly THE WORST In The NFL. It Was Prior To The Realignment. The NFC West Included Atlanta… GEEZ, Read A Map!!! They Spent More On Jet Fuel Than Food All Year.
The AFC East Was A Tough Old Division. Every Team Has Been In And/Or Won The SUPERBOWL. The Old NFC West Couldn’t Say That When BRADY Won In His 2nd Season and 1st Season As The Starter.!!!
I Still Believe That More Realignment Needs To Be Done. DALLAS Just Cannot Be In The NFC East Anymore.!!! Again, Read A Map.!!!

BRADY WILL PLAY UNTIL HE IS 50 & WILL HAVE 10 LOMBARDI TROPHIES.!!! FACT IS: The Patriot Way, Was Always “The BRADY WAY”… TB12 Proved That In The 2020-2021 Championship Season.!!! ‘Nuff Said.!!!

  21. Patrice Brantley Says:

GO, TB12, GO!!!!! We LOVE YOU!!!
