The Bucs And Henry Anderson
March 2nd, 2021Joe has a friend who works in league circles that keeps pestering Joe about Henry Anderson landing in Tampa.
The Jets defensive end turns 30 before the 2021 season and is expected to be a salary-cap cut by New York soon. He’s due about $8 million next season.
Now Joe can’t speak to Anderson’s game, but Joe’s contact swears Anderson has plenty left in the tank and was a favorite of former Jets head coach Todd Bowles, architect and leader of the Bucs defense. Bowles traded for Anderson before the 2018 season.
And in that ’18 season, Anderson was a versatile cog in Bowles‘ 3-4 scheme, leading the Jets with seven sacks and 16 QB hits in only 60 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Then Bowles got fired and Anderson’s production nosedived.
Bucs Super Bowl starter Rakeem Nuñez Roches (an 11-game regular season starter) is a free agent and could get paid to be a starter somewhere else. Will Gholston has a lot of mileage on him as he enters his ninth NFL season. Ndamukong Suh’s future is unclear.
Might the Bucs pounce on Stanford-grad Anderson (6-6, 300 pounds) if they’re nervous about their D-line depth and he’s willing to play on a cheap, one-year deal?

Sounds like a good ideia
March 2nd, 2021 at 9:51 am
And let who go???
March 2nd, 2021 at 9:56 am
Gholston @ $5,5m is an obvious cut … he’s a solid role player but age will start taking its toll.

Got to at least kick the tires on this, who knows how Free Agency is going to work out. Todds 3-4 scheme is based on stout interior lineman to let the Backers go and hunt. And Henry got some sacks too. Most likely Todd is keeping an eye on him, just in case, with the fact Todd knows him well, and he did well like Shaq in Todds defense. GO BUCS!!!

Gholston is rock soliid…no touch
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:03 am
Never heard of him…and I consider myself a NFL aficionado. Has a Beau Allen/Mitch Unrein feel to it/him. The second wave/tier free agents will be where the Bucs find some value.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:05 am
Leonard Williams! the man that should have been a Buc, over America’s Turnover Machine…
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:05 am
Will Gholston, born on 7-31-91
Henry Anderson, born on 8-3-91
The Bucs would be getting younger…4 days younger. You can’t make this kind of comedy up.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:17 am
I’d be happy if Anderson joined the Bucs, in a rotation with Suh and Gholston.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:19 am
The Buc’s free agency dinner bell rings in house this year. Before any $$$ is spent outside 1 Buc Palace, it needs to be spent solely on retaining the existing roster. To do anything other than that, at this time, is utterly stupid !!

Thank you Joe in Michigan; yes it is comedic here at times. Sometimes folks tend to overlook the obvious. Will Gholston is solid, knows the system, and just came off his best year. His $5.5 mil salary is a steal IMO.
Guess who led all Bucs this past season in QB Hits? Yup, Will Gholston (with 20). Next closest? Ndamukong Suh (with 19). Vita Vea contributed 3 QB Hits, as did Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Steve McLendon had none.
Now, Suh’s not under contract; neither is Nunez-Roches or McLendon. That’d leave NT Vea as the only interior DLineman IF the Bucs got rid of Will Gholston. Oh ya, that’d border on brilliant (OK, excuse the sarcasm).
Not only do we NEED to keep Gholston, but the Bucs also NEED to re-sign Suh as well as TWO replacements for Nunez-Roches and McLendon. Henry Anderson is an intriguing option, but I’m confident that Todd Bowles will have a huge say in whether or not we pull the trigger on that deal.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:22 am
He’s just another guy. There will likely be a better ring-chasing, free agent who’ll sign on the cheap.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:29 am
I’m mixed on Gholston. Roches may walk but McLendon who wants to stay will probably resign. Henderson maybe depending on $$. Suh will definitely will be resigned. Bucs should get all the smaller contracts done & then concentrate on CG & Shaq.

Joe in Michigan
Fair point about their age, however when you consider what Anderson was able to do 1 year in Bowles scheme the argument is definitely there to be made that he would still be an upgrade over Gholston.
I’m a fan of big Will, really I am. But at this point in his career its obvious that he has reached his ceiling. And that ceiling is being a big strong dude who is solid to very God against the run, but seeing that he has never been able to exceed beyond the 3 sack mark, he is a lackluster pass rusher.

Very good*
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:42 am
If Bowles wants Anderson, likely he gets added to the squad. And due to the SB window we’re in and the fact Anderson had his career-best season under Bowles, it’s likely to be on a reasonable 1-2 yr deal as well.
March 2nd, 2021 at 10:49 am
This dline would be a weakness all of a sudden if cant resign barrett.
March 2nd, 2021 at 11:03 am
I like Gholston these days, but he looks more like an interior defensive lineman than DE. Would def keep him, as VV’s back ups didn’t really impress or get pressure.
If they found Shaq for cheap they can do it again.
what ever happened to the other white guy we had at DE that looked pretty good when given a shot a yr or two back?
because paying 5,6,7 or 8 mill for a maybe is a big no IMO
March 2nd, 2021 at 11:19 am
I’m curious, what do you all think Henerickson will go for?
March 2nd, 2021 at 11:25 am
We definitely have the manic-depressive fan base on this site.
From the guys that say Licht is a horrible GM and cannot find anyone.
and also saying BA or Leftwich or Bowles make bad calls all the time.
To the guys that say valuable players like Shaq, Suh, Gholston can just be replaced because our scouting/GM/Coaching department is just that good that we can find the next guy in line to replace them for less money.
I am in favor of keeping this past defense as much intact as possible. We know that works for this system. Over the last year and 1/2 we have won the line of scrimmage a lot more than we have lost it. Why mess with that success – Gholston is a part of it.

^^^^^^^
It depends on how highly he’s thought of by the teams with the most cap space, and if there’s a bidding war over him. My guess would be that Hendrickson gets around what JJ Watt got, about $15 million per year.

Yeah I think Joe wants to go from first to worst run defense letting Lavonte and Gholston go. Who knows what will happen to Suh.
March 2nd, 2021 at 2:01 pm
Look, I’m the first to acknowledge that Gholston played better these last two years under Bowles. He’s a 9-year veteran though, and has been mostly non-existent the rest of his career. He is nowhere near worth what we have paid for him throughout his career, not even close.
For consistency, and if we cannot upgrade further, I’m OK with Gholston. Lets not pretend that he’s been this player all along though.
March 2nd, 2021 at 2:05 pm
Gholston is a good role player. I’d be okay with Anderson being signed for cheap and battling it out with Gholston, but I’m not cutting him and his 3 sacks for a guy with .5 sack in 2020.
March 2nd, 2021 at 4:22 pm
How about everyone wait and see what the Bucs do first. If Jason Licht thinks he can’t do it without you, I’m sure he’ll give you a call.
March 2nd, 2021 at 5:05 pm
maybe he could bring what carl nassib brought to the table
March 2nd, 2021 at 5:36 pm
Never heard of him, but a quick look at his stats and I thought, blah, whatever, his numbers are fine – but that’s because I assumed he was a LB based on the picture of him, I didn’t realize he’s 6′ 6″ and 300lb. For a DT, which is how he’s listed, his numbers are actually pretty good. Still have no idea if he’s any good or what his salary is going to be, but it’s a good name to put on the radar.
As for Gholston, he’s still only getting $5.5m, which is chump change when it comes to starting defensive lineman – and he’s been reliable. I’m not a big Gholston fan, but for this defense, he’s a dependable guy who is generally healthy, so for his salary I think they’d stick with what they have.

SufferingSince76: Licht already has me on speed dial. Hahaha
March 2nd, 2021 at 7:46 pm
Too expensive.
March 3rd, 2021 at 11:49 am
Y’all are stupid. Gholston led the team in QB hits. Look it up. He’s a stud. $5.5m is nothing. The dude started 19 games. He’s durable. He’s very solid and he’s going nowhere.
