Cornerback Depth Alarming
March 23rd, 2010One of Joe’s more painful moments of the 2009 season was watching cornerback Derrick Roberson covering Roddy White as White caught the winning score in the 20-17 loss at Atlanta.
Sure, White is a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver who made a play (wish we had one). But Roberson covering him at that critical moment was just a bad reality check on how far the Bucs must go to rebuild their team. With Roberson still pretty fresh off the practice squad against Atlanta, the odds were way in the Falcons’ favor with the game on the line.
So what’s the Bucs’ situation at cornerback now? Here’s the depth chart, per an interesting pre-draft look at cornerbacks on Buccaneers.com:
Brandon Anderson
Ronde Barber
E.J. Biggers
Elbert Mack
Derrick Roberson
Aqib Talib
Stoney Woodson
Hardly inspiring.
And downright scary when you consider Barber’s age and Talib still possibly facing a suspension for allegedly slugging a cab driver. His case is still pending with a new hearing scheduled for April 19.
While Raheem The Dream surely has high hopes for Biggers, last year’s seventh round pick who lost the season on injured reserve, cornerback is clearly an area of serious need.
Former Bucs quarterback Jeff Carlson called upgrading cornerback “the highest priority” in his latest QB Blast column on JoeBucsFan.com.
A glance at the depth chart makes that claim difficult to argue against.

If some how Bradford is still on the board when we are up and Seattle who has 2 first round picks offers both of them to us than i say we pull the trigger. Even if one or both DTs are still there and we get a mind blowing trade i saw we do it. Imagine if we could get like Haden and Spiller with the 2 first rounders (yes i believe we could get younger at RB).

Or we could get berry and spiller and if I remember I believe berry has played some cornerback too!

It is alarming. But if we don’t get a better pass rush, any moves in the secondary aren’t going to help much.
Is there any part of this team that isn’t alarming?

There is no way Seattle offers both 1st rounders to move into our slot. I like to dream too, but it should be a LITTLE realistic. Now, their #6 and #14 for our #3 and #42 is a little more doable, especially if both Suh and McCoy are still there….as long as we’re dreaming.

It’s not alarming. Dominik wanted to get young and with youth comes inexperience. Our team is just our front office and coaching staff. Young and inexperienced. That spells major disaster. Not alarming though. Were weak and have no depth at just about ever position because Domink is clueless.

If we are going to stick with the Tampa 2 style, then we need to remember what Monte and every-one said. It starts up front. its very hard when we are always dropping safties in the box.

Stoney Woodson? What practice squad did he come from?
March 23rd, 2010 at 3:21 pm
The depth at almost every position is alarming… and not just for the Bucs. Most teams have young, unkonw quantities as backups playiong on special teams.
That said, the bucs do need to draft a CB this draft. Barber can move to nickel full time and Mack can be the dime guy. I know many here get on Mack, but I think he will be just fine as the 3rd CB for a long time. He is by no means, though, the future starter.

Stoney Woodson ??? reminds me of a player in High School named Stoney Weed. He was always a step behind, got confused, but never missed a meal. He too had a brother named Tanard. Wow, so many years ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

News flash Joe: The Bucs are thin on talent all around. You wrote that the Bucs were thin at WR, RB, now CB. I am guessing next is OL, DL, LBs, Safeties, ST, Kickers, QBs. Lots to write about . . .

I am very inspired by Stoney Woodson

I think Jeff Carlson thinks that we need 3 or 4 lock down corners to blanket wide receivers for 10-20 seconds so our sorry d-line can finally get pressure!

It appears to be a pretty good rounds 2-3 corner draft. Zone guys tend to drop.Ronde was a third, after all.

Joe, I don’t know how you could come up with many positve stories about this team.
You might have better luck spinning the Hindenberg Disaster.

Eric:
Joe had one of the most positive stories in months when he had the Jeff Faine post last week.
It got a grand total of one comment.
So much for people wanting positive news.

Joe, it’s sad when the only positive story that you can write about the Bucs is not really on football, but about Faine wanting to help the children. I wonder how long it would take to find a positive football related story when it comes to the Bucs as a team.
Then again, at least you don’t try to blow smoke up our asses like that Dominik article that was posted today! For that I thank you!
