“Jamel Dean Day” Declared
February 22nd, 2021If you’re looking for the Buccaneers cornerback who led the team in tackles per snaps played last season, look no further than No. 35.
Jamel Dean knows how to wrap up, and the 2019 third-round pick out of Auburn wrapped up his second season with a Super Bowl ring and a year of good development. Yeah, Dean had his highs and lows, but that was no surprise and he certainly played solid ball in the playoffs.
Dean’s Florida hometown of Cocoa was so impressed, the Indian River community declared February 7 to be henceforth named “Jamel Dean Day.”
And on Saturday, Dean was given his own rally and officially got the key to the city.
Local TV reports said hundreds attended.
“He’s the best thing that ever come from the Dean family,” said Dean’s cousin Johnny, per News 6 TV in Orlando. “First and foremost, he graduated from college with honors before even making it to the NFL.”
Joe loves these kinds of stories, and Joe hopes it inspires honored Buccaneers to work even harder.
Ahhhh, the power of the Super Bowl. If the Bucs had lost to the Chiefs, Dean might have only ever gotten a parking ticket — and a thank you for volunteering — from his hometown officials.

I really like his game. He is big, fast, physical and aggressive. He takes a few too many risks and can get caught looking, but if he can learn to dial that back just a tad, i think he can be an elite cb in the league. I think its not a coincidence the secondaries 2 worst games (rams and chiefs #1) were when he was out with injury.

All these young DBs are good at playing up but they’ve always played zone some how. They played up in the playoffs and killed it. Make a note.

Dean is in competition with Davis for best CB on the team… Dean gets in bad position sometimes and seems Leary to cut too hard on his operated on knees… Both knees I think multiple times/!! It’s amazing the side can even still play at this high a level!! …. I think he is the best CB on the team but he’s got a handicap… But not only does he tackle well he’s a big hitter!! … Really like Dean, good guy!!

Dean gets slammed by casual fans because Cris Collinsworth picked on him during a national game. Everyone gets beat. This is true. Dean is far from a liability, however, as he allowed only a 61.4% completions and an opposing rating of 85.4. He didn’t have nearly as good of numbers as a rookie 50% and 72.4 rating…but he was still very good and not far behind Davis in either area. His upside is huge.
