Subpar Super Bowl For Chris Godwin?
February 4th, 2021If Bucs fans are looking for a potential trend, this may not be a good one for one of the NFL’s best receivers.
Per NextGen stats, it seems Chris Godwin struggles against press coverage. In fact, it could be that Godwin may not be able to get sufficient separation from press coverage because his targets go way down against this type of defense.
Per NextGen, in games facing press, Godwin is only targeted 10 percent of the time.
And guess who likes to play press coverage? Yup. The Chiefs.
When an opposing receiver lines up wide, over half the time the Chiefs are pressing the guy.
So does this possibly mean the Bucs will have Godwin lining up tight to the line most of the time catching passes in traffic? It’s not like Godwin isn’t able to fight for catches.
On the bright side, in the Week 12 game against the same Chiefs, Godwin had the most targets for the Bucs (nine) catching eight passes for 97 yards. Joe can only hope Godwin struggles that much in Super Bowl LV.
Antonio Brown is able to beat press coverage with elite burst off the line of scrimmage.
Brown averaged a 9.13 MPH top speed within 1 second of his press routes this season, 2nd-fastest in the NFL (min. 50 press routes).#SBLV | #GoBucs

What about creative screens or motions?

They both will stand out.

CG will ball out…..if he gets the dropsies move on
February 4th, 2021 at 12:07 pm
Everyone knows it’s time to step up; Many great players in this league never won a Super Bowl, yeah, we’re talking about you Dan Marino!!
February 4th, 2021 at 12:11 pm
NextGen stats won’t be playing in this game. If NextGen knew sooo much, they’d be getting rich in Vegas instead of predicting Godwin will struggle this Sunday against press coverage. Stats are for losers.

We love Godwin but his post season has not been good.
Maybe defenses have figured him out. Maybe it’s the pressure. Definitely it is something.
The Bucs can’t keep throwing to him if he keeps dropping the ball.

Here is TBBF’s prediction…..if Godwin doesn’t work out….
Evans will, or AB will, or Scotty will, or Tyler will, or Brate will or Gronk will and if all else fails, Lenny will.
Brady will find open receivers if CG14 is covered…..
Bet on it!!!
February 4th, 2021 at 12:25 pm
spot on TBBF.
February 4th, 2021 at 12:39 pm
Not worried about the targets, Brady is smart enough to see who is covered and who has the hot route, coverages ect…….. Godwin has had his share of targets, but had the case of the dropsies, if he makes those catches it’s a different story. I am not worried about CG14.
Agree with Hodad and TBBF 100%

What Sly said. I’m fearful of the Post Season Drops Syndrome he seemed to contact this post season. Not just passes but td passes are being dropped. This just can’t happen Sunday
February 4th, 2021 at 12:48 pm
This is a flawed stat that likely has less to do with Godwin and more to do with Brady. So his targets are down against press man coverage, I’m guessing that if Brady sees press man he is targeting Evans, Brown and even Miller for a chance at a shot play. Godwin thrives on working holes in zones and seams. Much like Gronk.

We’re all saying the same thing … Godwin or no Godwin the offense will be fine. WFG and the Saints had better defenses than KC. Godwin sucked and the offense still put up points. This game comes down to defense. Can our defense get a few stops? If yes, Bucs win.

Godwin is a fantastic WR, but has struggled during the playoffs, as noted above.
I really hope he has a great SuperBowl, because Im pretty sure this will be his last game as a Buc.
You want to keep
Both lines in tact. You dont want to lose a pass Rusher.
Cant afford everyone.
Regardless, if Godwin gets over the drops- he can make a huge difference in the Superbowl. Brown and Evans will draw so much attention, that Godwin will have opportunities.

Chiefs were probably playing a lot of soft zone after they got way ahead
February 4th, 2021 at 2:55 pm
Chiefs played their same defense the whole game!! Capt Tim you don’t know what the Bucs will or won’t do with their money. Stats are for geeks who know nothing about football! Chris Godwin is a beast and probably the most valuable Bucs receiver going forward, so he will be back!! Bucs win 34-21!!
February 4th, 2021 at 3:38 pm
Methinks the ball is going to get spread out, A LOT!
KC, won’t know who to cover!
Big game
High scoring game(bet the over)
Whoever fields the better “D” will win
Who’s got the better “D”?
DA BUCS!
February 4th, 2021 at 4:47 pm
Hey Capt. Tim there’s something called the franchise tag. Bucs are not losing Godwin. Brady wants to keep his offense in tact. Godwin isn’t going anywhere.
February 4th, 2021 at 4:49 pm
Just my opinion on Godwin, guys.
We’ll see how it turns out
February 4th, 2021 at 5:00 pm
Brady and the offense have saved the best performance of the year for the last game of the year, in Brady we trust.
February 4th, 2021 at 6:24 pm
Mel Greenberg is the unsung hero capologist/contract that returned our D intact. Other teams are in cap hell. Not our Bucs. Nope, haven’t read that. Thanks to Mr. Greenberg we are in good shape. Well done Mel
Go Bucs!

Maybe his finger is killing him… Brady rarely throws soft balls…
CG will miss an easy catch, then make one like the 52 yarder on GB… Go figure.
February 4th, 2021 at 10:27 pm
This info from next gen is not some breaking news or dark secret. Since BA took over and installed his offense the bucs have game planned Evans as the primary target against primarily man teams and Godwin gets the number 1 look if its zone.
This is they way its been for 2 seasons. So this is the predictions Godwin is less effective is not a leap of faith or something stats based. It’s what the team has put on tape and don’t expect a last minute change.
As for the team resigning Godwin, who knows but the team has planned on a possible change. If he doesn’t sign , his replacement is on the roster so the bucs won’t be in a pinch if it plays out that way.
February 5th, 2021 at 12:41 am
I’ll take my chances. Godwin, Brown, Gronk, ME…. I don’t care who gets tge catches us as long as they come in bunches
February 5th, 2021 at 8:34 am
I wonder if these drops are because of Godwin’s finger? Or because Brady seems to surprise some of these guys. Sometimes they don’t seem to be expecting the ball to be thrown thier way.. Brady at the beginning of the year seemed like he was throwing softer then than he is now. Some of his throws are into tight windows and he throws a bullet. It is the post season Brady could just be in the moment and throwing harder than these guys are used to him throwing. But hey these guys are professional wide receivers they should be able to catch a 43yr olds hard pass lol. I remember one play Fournette was running his route Brady threw the ball before Fournette even finished his route and turned his head. He dropped it.
Or it could just be these teams are game planning better for Godwin now. They have game tape on him. They know he drops passes in tight man press coverage. Not to mention so far this post season the refs have let these guys play. Not alot of flags. Defensive backs seem to be getting away with a little more. Refs not calling penalties unless it obvious.

Whatever is causing these dropped passes they need to figure it out. Because a drop is only and few inches away from turning into a tipped pass for and int.
