Bucs Defense Stingy On Big Plays

January 29th, 2021

Bucs DC Todd Bowles.

Now this is a very interesting stat to Joe.

Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier over at Pro Football Network did a statistical breakdown of the Bucs and Chiefs. Being a former high school math teacher, Tanier knows his way around numbers — one of these days Joe is going to ask Tanier if his former student Joe Flacco was a C-student.

Say what you will about the Bucs defense, but from Tanier’s research, the Bucs defense just doesn’t get burned on big play too often.

Big-Play Prevention
Buccaneers: 50 plays allowed of 20-plus yards, eight plays allowed of 40-plus yards.
Chiefs: 62 plays allowed of 20-plus yards, 12 plays allowed of 40-plus yards.

The Buccaneers were one of the stingiest teams in the league when it came to allowing 20-plus yard gains, thanks to their outstanding pass rush and run defense. They’ll need to continue with that stinginess in order to defeat the Chiefs in Super Bowl 55.

Combine this data with each team’s big-play numbers, and the Buccaneers appear quite capable of holding their own, if not outright winning, a battle of haymakers.

Joe’s readers are probably going to get sick of the following because we are nine days out, but Joe has a good feeling about this game.

Pat Mahomes has a turf toe. How sore that will be a week from Sunday we shall see.

The Chiefs likely are down their starting tackles on offense.

Vita Vea and Jamel Dean did not play against the Chiefs back in November.

Joe’s eager for Super Bowl LV to kick off!

A huge issue issue to me in the first game was a non existent offense to start the game. Same in the 38-3 game against the Saints. If the Bucs would have had 17 or 14 or 10 points in the first Qtr against the Chiefs it would have been a different story. Bottom line is they can beat the Chiefs but it is huge to come out firing like they did in GB. I believe the Bucs need 40-45 to win this game. They can definitely score 40+ a game. GO BUCS!!!!

  2. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

With both starting Offensive Tackles out for the Super Bowl, the Bucs should be able to flush Mahomes out of the pocket on most passing plays. In week 14 of the regular season, the Saints put pressure on Mahomes 39.5% of the time he dropped back and sacked him 4 times. He had the worst pass attempt number of just 5.4 yards and only threw 254 yards in the game and this is from the Saints who rarely blitzed. If we can replicate the same pressure as the Saints then we have a decent shot of holding KC to a low scoring offense.

Someone please tell me how in the hell are the Bucs soft zone panzy defense going to stop an amazing lightning quick My-Homie offensive attack????

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER ME THIS?????

They’re just going to do short intermediate pass plays once they see soft zone defense………….

This game will come down to who can score the most points and make the least amount of mistakes.

  4. Sport Says:

Agreed Joe! This team grew up right before our eyes.

It also put the children to bed. All the haters should have a dump truck full of crow to consume.

Lost Dog, DiaRhealsit and even grumpy douche Rick Stroud.

For the rest of you who had fun all season long, we have one more game this season and we made draft talk irrelevant!

    Go Bucs!

    In BA I Trust!

Yeah. For starters, Mahomes is not going to be able stay in the pocket long with Vita Vea at NT and both KC tackles out of the game. Second, the Bucs have one of the fastest LB to stop Mahomes from scrambling. Third, I am sure Todd Bowles will creep up the Safeties to stop TE Travis Kelce. Question will be, can Dean stop Tyreek Hill.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

Anthem- I’d think the Bucs won’t play them the same way the Bills did. The Bills tried to play them the way the raiders did and KC ate them up with short passes especially shallow crossing routes. The Bucs will mix up both zone and man, shut down the run and get a ton of controlled pressure on the Qb. The key is to get pressure on Mahomes but don’t let him break containment and run all over you either.

    @Anthem:

You have asked questions before. IMO they tend to be negative sometimes without necessity.

I wonder if Brady’s arm will go “noodle” like Peyton manning’s arm did when he went to Denver????

  8. 2021 Year of the GOAT Says:

We must slow KC down…. Your not going stop them… our DL makes it a long painful day for Mahomes and we have a chance of winning.

  9. Beeej Says:

What did Bowles do on the second half of our last game against KC?

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Anthem

The same way we just beat the Saints & the Packers…..

    Where u been….buddy?

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

The Bills keep two deep on most of the time daring the KC to run. The problem is the Bills could not stop the run. The Bucs has the number 1 run defense and is up for the task. I suspect the Bucs to do the same, creep up the Safeties to stop Kelce and play man to man with all WR. Most likely they will double up on Hill on most plays.

Limit big plays and hit PM all day long….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. LargoBuc Says:

Anthem you do know alot of the big plays our defense has given up has been while in man coverage, with our reciver(s) on an island.
It’s funny how neither scheme seems very effective with no pass rush. Lets hope Shaq and JPP can pick up where they left off Sunday.

  14. #1bucsfan Says:

I feel the same. I really don’t think the super bowl will be anything like the last time we played the chiefs

  15. Bruce Blahak Says:

    We’re winning it! It’s destiny!

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Most of the comments thus far have been on what the Bucs’ DEFENSE will do to stop Patrick Mahomes & the Chiefs’ offense. The bigger question IMO is: ‘What will the Chiefs’ DEFENSE do to stop Tom Brady & the Bucs’ offense?’

When we played the Chiefs back in Week 12, we had a short week to prepare (we’d just come off a really hard Monday night game against the Rams). The Chiefs meanwhile had just come off a last-minute Sunday win (35-31) against the Raiders (so they had an extra day to recover). As everyone knows, we fell behind very early (17-0 in the 1st qtr), had to go heavy air attack to try to catch up, but never did. Falling behind by that much in essence destroyed any chance of a BALANCED ATTACK & pretty much put RoJo & Fournette on ice (12 rushes between them for 76 yds, but almost half of that was on 1 explosive RoJo run).

There’s really no magic to beating the Chiefs IMO. An effective running attack combined with play-action passes will open the deeper options to Gronk, ME13, Godwin, AB & Scotty. Chiefs’ defense isn’t good enough to stay ahead of what we can throw at them, as long as we keep them off-balance. They’re vulnerable, and there’s no excuse for our offense not capitalizing on their weaknesses. Every Bucs’ offensive player should have ‘ Keep Mahomes on the bench’ inscribed on their helmets.

We most likely won’t beat the Chiefs IF we play a one-dimensional ballgame; makes it infinitely easier for the defense. Bucs have an outstanding capability to run a BALANCED ATTACK to control the game & score a lot of points. RoJo & Fournette are both reasonably healthy right now & our OLine is run-blocking the best they have in years. We’ve got receiving weapons out the ying-yang, and there’s no excuse for not kicking ass in this game. BE PATIENT & CONTROL THE GAME … we got this.

    Good take DR
I’ve been thinking this will be an explosively offensive game and the actual telling factor will be which defense is able to slow the opposing offense.
It seems to me that KC’s defense will have a harder time containing our offense(if firing on all cylinders) than our defense will have containing KC. If, of course, they play like they did the last three quarters of our last meeting.

Notice there were a couple of “if’s” there. With proper preparation, those “if’s” can become much more definite.

This game has the makings of a real barn burner which is just the type of entertainment the NFL and the country really needs right now.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

the only thing that can stop our offense is poor execution and penalties….we need sharp brady all 4 quarters…run the ball…no bad/crazy throws…no drop passes…no penalties….

we do that and the chains keep moving…we’ve been good at scoring 7 in the redzone and im confident that will continue…

defensively, we must HIT mahomes…get after him with the front 4 and send DW early and often!!!!…DBs play tight coverage to force tight windows and contested catches….

the pressure is on KC…just like it was vs the saints and packers…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. TSmitty300 Says:

Two things to consider guys and gals.

    1. Mahomes makes a lot of his plays outside the pocket. They also are creative with how they get their players the ball.

    2. Andy Reid has two weeks to get his offensive line ready. I don’t believe he will be stupid like Green Bay and leave those tackles on an island all game.

    Should be a good one
