Joe Namath Explains Why Tom Brady Is The Greatest Quarterback In History

If you’re an old fart who has most of your life behind you, then you’ll probably be interested in reading this post.
No, it has nothing to do with drunken kissing attempts on Suzy Kolber.
Joe Namath is a Hall of Fame quarterback and a legendary womanizer. He called NFL games for NBC for years, teaming with felony woman biter Marv Albert.
These days, Namath, 77, is just known for being a fantastic interview.
He jumped on CBS Sports Radio this week and declared Tom Brady the greatest quarterback to put on a uniform. And who would know better than Namath, the Super Bowl III MVP?
“That’s always been a hard thing to say because I’ve watched guys early on going back to the days of the Cleveland Browns when Paul Brown went to 10 straight championships or playoffs with Otto Graham. But nobody’s matched Brady’s record; he’s answered the challenge more times than any player that I’ve seen,” Namath said when asked to name the best QB in NFL history.
“It is a great deal to do with the [QB]. He’s had some terrific teams, no doubt, and Tom would be the first one to give the credit to his teammates, man, on both sides of the ball. But yeah, if you got to pick a guy … Now you know I used to love Joe Montana; and I still do. He looked like Fred Astaire [with] his footwork back there, the great dancer. He bought time and was able to move around. And Steve Young, are you kidding me?
“There are plenty of quarterbacks that you would take on your team every day. Tom has accomplished more than the guys before him, and Tom will let you know he’s had the opportunity.
“But I’ve never seen a quarterback, a player, endure like [Brady] has, physically improved, changed, the decision-making is brilliant. If you got to put somebody on top, there’s no doubt you got to go with Brady. Would you take Terry Bradshaw or Troy Aikman? Yeah. Yeah, let me have those guys, too. There’s a lot of guys you would take on your team. But Tom deservingly belongs at the top of the list if you got to make a list.”

He lost me at Aikman… all-time great? Negative. All-time great caretaker? yep. He was the best game manager of all-time. That’s quite a feat. Cowboys had a better record without Aikman (when he was hurt) than they did with him… but couldn’t win a game without Emmitt Smith.

Sure Montana was 4-0 in super bowls, but he went 4 times. That is once every four seasons (really a great number but we are talking greatest here). Tom has gone virtually every other year for 21 years. The only thing Montana “had” on Brady was that he left late in his career and lead a different team to the AFC championship. Now Brady has surpassed that accomplishment and brought a losing team to the super bowl in one year…. during a pandemic! Even before he played for Tampa there is no question who is the best QB ever. Especially during the super bowl era. Im sort of partial to Otto Graham pre- super bowl, but even still I give Brady the nod overall because of the complexity of the game today.

Started watching football the year before the first SB, so can’t really include the era before then. Grew up watching QB legends such as Starr, Dawson, Namath, Unitas, and Stabler, Montana, etc. to name just a few of the great ones.
Living in Tampa in the ’70’s, I became an instant Bucs fan from day-1. Unfortunately though they still hold the worst all-time win % in NFL history at 39.93% to date.

Therefore, the “hate” of Tom Brady came quite naturally since the last thing the Bucs seem to be able to do was win.
Then, TB decides to join the Bucs! Wow, my brain was going to need re-programming, so I started telling everyone, “it will take 3-months for me to stop hating him, 3-months to start liking him, and 3-months to start loving him.”
Fast forward 9-months, the Bucs make the playoffs, win 3-road playoff games and are the first team to play SB host in their own stadium! After losing 26 in a row to start, Johnny Carson cracking jokes about them, and even their original HC jokingly agreeing with their execution, the Bucs (and us Buc fans) have absolutely earned the right to be the first team at something that we can for once be proud of!
Therefore, I can without doubt now say that I love Tom Brady, he is the best QB, year-in and year-out, of any QB I’ve ever seen over 56 years of watching the NFL.

It’s clear that Reasonable Joe wrote this. I think Joe Montana is #2 on the list of all time great QBs. If you take away the numbers that depend on longevity (i.e. total passing yards) and strictly look at averages then Tom Brady is still slightly better than Joe Montana. The only people that think Joe Montana is greater than Tom Brady are those that have an issue with Tom Brady or the New England Patriots. We all know Unreasonable Joe has an issue with Tom Brady with his ridiculous, lengthy description of Brady.
Tom Brady has been in 18% of Super Bowls that have ever happened. That should give anyone pause when arguing who is the GOAT.

Well over 20 years ago I had a short conversation with Namath and asked him other than himself, who was his favorite and the best passing QB he had ever seen. With out batting an eye he said “Archie Manning”

Brady is the best player regardless of position in NFL history. Rice and Montana can be in the conversation, but their mics would be turned off.

TB: 10 SB in 19 full seasons = 52.3% of the time he made it to the last game. Nobody comes close. Basically, more often than not, Brady is playing in the SB. There are a number of great players who never went to the playoffs let alone the SB.
He has an enormous effect on teammates. Everybody tries harder for him. And I do not recall any former teammate ever badmouthing him. (Like you hear from teammates of Roethlisberger or Rogers, for example.) Somebody needs to study this and write a book about it. How the hell does he do it?

Namath has seen all the greats and he has been off the sauce since after the Suzy K incident so hus take carries a lot of weight. BTW, thanks Joe for reminding me about the freaky escapades of Marv Albert. How the heck did that cat resurrect his career? Back in the days of relevant talk radio on WDAE Jim Rome used take a run at that guy multiple times every afternoon.

Montana was more dominant in his era. Brady has often times not even been the best QB of the season throughout his career, albeit his career has seen competitors like Manning, Brees, Rodgers, and Mahomes. (Montana was always better than Marino, Elway, and everyone else almost every season of his era)
Of course, if we are to compare QBs only to their eras, then you could also make a case for Unitas as the GOAT.
Brady left a team with mediocre talent and went to a team absolutely loaded with talent. You cannot question the man’s decision making skills!

I’ve watched every minute Brady has been on the field since he first replaced Bledsoe. Of course I understand we are all human beings and no one is perfect. But, If you go back and study Brady, You will find that in the toughest of moments when he needs a first down or a score to win, He will do it! Clutch is the only word I can come up with. I’m always reminded of the movie “Braveheart” when I watch Brady.
Nobody Gave Brady a chance 2 years ago to go into KC for AFC championship and yet he did it. Sure, I understand Mahomes had better stats for the game. But, watch what Brady did in key moments when the game was on the line.
Best way I can put it, when a team puts Brady’s back against the wall, something happens to him and he does things that are just unbelievable.
