The Buccaneers Play-Action
January 21st, 2021Joe found this today surfing around searching for Bucs nuggets. For Joe’s readers who dig X’s and O’s discussion and enjoy the technical elements of football, this is for you.
Those bored by X’s and O’s talk, see if you can hang in there.
A football writer and analyst who currently is a receivers coach at Zephyrhills High School, Gene Clemons, who also has had stops as a head coach in Orlando and as defensive coordinator at Wharton high and Tampa Bay Tech, did a breakdown on the whiteboard of what he calls “The Buccaneers Play-Action.”
Clemons is seen using the play-action against the Packers back in October as a teaching opportunity. He has cool insight using All-22 tape of what Bucs fans may expect from offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich against the Packers.
Anyway, it’s cool to learn and understand how the play-action in the Bucs’ playbook works.

SOOOO many weapons.
More than GB.
Devante Adams = Mike Evans
Godwin > Valdez Scantling
AB, Scotty Miller > Lazard
Gronk, Brate > Tonyan
Brady > Rodgers
Tampa D > GB D
The Bucs are HUNGRY to play a SB in Tampa!

I gained some understanding here. Kudos to Coach Clemons, and same to Joe for sharing this nugget. Goes a long way towards explaing what may appear as a vanilla formation. Crafty, no?
Go Bucs!

People who are watching this thinking how basic should consider the fact that 98% of the fans never played real football.

He leaves out linebacker responsibilities and reaction which, IMO, are the keys to making play action work.
He basically says that numerous plays can be run with the same formation and motion, which is true.
Buy How and Why a D reacts to it are another story I hope he covers in future “whiteboard” sessions.
