Donovan Smith Vs. Chase Young

January 12th, 2021

Video style!

Want to know why mouthy Washington defensive end Chase Young was a total non-factor against the Bucs on Saturday? Joe offers up evidence.

Bucs superfan Steven Cheah of Barstool Sports likes to do cutups from All-22 video. So he did one of Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith going against Young.

Simply put, Smith had one of his best games. The talented Washington defensive end had but three tackles Saturday night. No sacks. No quarterback pressures. No quarterback hits. Nada.

Basically, Young often was Smith’s female dog. Smith owned the Ohio State product. Owned him.

Now Joe fully understands how many Bucs fans despise Smith and can’t wait to run him out of town. In fact, for some, it is their wet dream that Smith will get cut and the Bucs will move Tristan Wirfs to left tackle. Joe is vehemently against this for several reasons Joe won’t get into today.

Next year Smith is currently projected to be the ninth-highest paid left tackle by Spotrac.com. That will likely drop as other guys get raises or free agents will be signed to pricy contracts.

So that will likely drop Smith’s salary to around 12th-highest or so. In other words, an average salary for a left tackle. If Smith plays consistently as he did on Saturday, his average salary would be a bargain.

We are well aware of Smith’s ability when he plays hard. He doesn’t play hard all the time. There are no excuses for taking a play off when you play LT!!! If he’s consistent then maybe he is worth his salary. His history shows otherwise.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

“If he plays consistently as he did on Saturday…”, says it all.

  3. Mike Says:

He really had no problems with Young. Let’s hope he can do the same or better on Sunday against the Saints.

  4. Brevard Buc Says:

He plays like that and he could be All Pro!

  5. rrsrq Says:

    That was boss

  6. Durango 95 Says:

    Mad props to big Don.

  7. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Outstanding! Thank you Donavan! Now can Aaron Stinnie play at that level. I hope that is not asking too much…

  8. Robert Says:

Props to the big man…had a feeling he would show up!

  9. unbelievable Says:

Smith player great last week, major props to him. He is capable of being one of the best when we wants to be.

But let’s not pretend Chase Young isn’t a rookie who was in his first playoff game either… or that Washington didn’t get to play 6 of there games against the weak NFC Least… okay?

Jordan, Davenport and Hendrickson (if he plays) are far more experienced and have way more pass rush moves than young does. This will be a much much harder game for our o-line, especially factoring in a brand new RG who has never taken a snap… yikes.

  10. unbelievable Says:

    *played great last week

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We should be able to restructure DS with a longer-term contract…..

We have to find some money somewhere……everyone wants to pay Godwin, LVD…..some want to keep Gronk…..

Fournette & AB will probably be too pricey….

  12. The Red Mirage Says:

76 definitely had an awesome game, Gronk handled Young one on one a few times as well. Now, can 76 have a good game against the Saints? We’ll see, he’s had some real stinkers against them in the past.
Agree one hundred percent that you don’t move Wirfs though.

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

    AMEN Joe!

D.S. has admittedly been inconsistent at times. But if you look a little deeper into his inconsistency you’ll find he tends to play to the level of his competition.

While that’s not admirable…you lose games to mediocre and poor teams that way..it’s not a problem in the playoffs. DS will face outstanding competition in every game and he knows it.

I’m anxious to see how he does. Perhaps he’s a bit like Allan Iverson…let’s wait until things get real before I turn it on.

  14. zzbuc Says:

He got a great help fom Gronk, but he played really well that undeniable.
Gronk had ony one job, blobk and more block, thats probably why Brate hd so many yards, and obviously Chase young was a non factor

  15. mg Says:

    Stellar breakdown, thanks

  16. SlyPirate Says:

Think who Donovan Smith goes up against in practice. JPP, Shaq, Gholston. What’s a rookie going to show Smith that he doesn’t see every day in practice?

  17. dmatt Says:

It’s not a surprise n I’m not impressed that a 6 yr veteran contained a rookie looking to make a name for himself. However, I would be more than surprised n would be highly impressed if DSmith perform the same against the likes of Cam Jordan n the gang. That would really be a topic for discussion.

  18. anderson Fa Gonzalez Says:

I am honestly not that impressed with chase young to be honest.

  19. james west Says:

good job d smith, now if you can play like that this sunday, it would be much appreciated, and might propel you to a superbowl or at least one step closer, because i don’t think after the saints there’s a team that can beat ya in the nfc

  20. Colin in Canada Says:

Awesome link Joe. Really like this kind of stuff. Keep up the good work!

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

The OL as a whole, did better than most will give credit for. Props!
For Smith, it’s the consistency that most fans kvetch about. Love the OL porn.

  22. Coburn Says:

Anderson..yeah tbh Don job didn’t look that hard. Young didn’t look like he had many pass rush moves in what I just watched

  23. Delawest Says:

Oh we’re still talking about last weekend ?

  24. Buczilla Says:

If he treats Jordan and his fellow douchebags like that on Sunday, I’m all for keeping him and even extending him. Everyone knows Donovan’s issue is consistency and he still hasn’t found it yet after 6 years despite having the abi!ity to be damn good.

  25. Cannon Says:

I think its fitting that Donovan has this shot at redeeming himself. He’s been the punching bag of Cameron Jordon and the Saint’s for years now.

If he plays well, then all that noise can be put behind him.

    Get it done, Smith.

  26. AMI_Chris Says:

Agree. LT is just one of those positions that you have to pay up for. I’m not crazy about the run-blocking ability of this line but it’s a passing league.

  27. Bucamania Says:

Time for DS to exorcise some demons vs Hendrickson.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lmao.
    Im still hearing”Takes plays off”
They wrote that about Donovan, in several draft mags, the year we drafted Donovan, and people have been regurgitating it ever since.
Because most people have no idea about Oline play. They can complain and sound knowledgeable, and not be called out for it.

I commented on a Sunday Post, about how Donovan DESTROYED Chase. It was an epic thrashing, yet no one else even noticed . . .
If you didnt mention it- then you dont watch O line.

I had mentioned moving Wirfs to Left tackle. As I said in that post, not because Smith isnt great- but because Wirfs is INCREDIBLE, and You want the best Oline you have, guarding Tom’s back. Plus Wirfs is on his rookie contract- and the team will need money to keep all the skilled guys.
But I am,and have been, perfectly happy with Donovan Smith at Left Tackle.
We are lucky to have him. Our Tackles, Guards, and Center are all very good.
Tom has stayed Clean all year. Our O Line is probably the biggest reason he wanted to come here.

  29. Brad Says:

Donovan Smith has been the Saints’ team female dog for 5 years now. Hopefully he can finally have a good game against them. This reminds me of Philly before Ronde shut down the Vet. We couldn’t beat them until we finally did.

  30. cmurda Says:

In my opinion, the last 2 years should have changed Bucs fans minds about Donovan. He’s getting better and more consistent and is definitely enjoying his best season. He needs to be kept. There is no reason to think we should “draft somebody better”. That’s stupid reasoning when the man is cutting the mustard for less than most good LT’s receive. The job he did against Chase Young was the stuff he should tell his grandkids about.

  31. firethecannons Says:

Cam Jordan has owned the Bucs so many times now maybe DS76 can make Jordan stfu!

  32. CalBucsFan Says:

DS is very solid and deserves praise for how well he (and his OL mates) held a DL that was raved about all week long by all of the expert pundits!

The Bucs have shown they know how to jettison draft pick mistakes, sure hope they don’t do the same with an OL player that has proven he can protect our QB and open holes for our RBs against the best in the league. Can he be beaten some times, hell yeah, but everyone player can be, this is the NFL!

Us fans of the Bucs need to stop berating one of our own players, it takes a team filled with players that know how to work together to reach a goal, and DS has been an integral part of that for several years now. Or shall we start banging on Godwin now because he dropped some very catchable passes too?

It’s sure the hell working pretty well right now, isn’t it? Let’s leave it alone then, enjoy the run and Let’s Go Bucs!

  33. Kentucky Buc Says:

For the DS haters on here. Did it ever cross your mind that Brady’s demand for excellence has changed Big DS mindset. Whether willingly or not. It’s working. Time to cut the man some slack. He’s strung together several good games in a row.

  34. Kentucky Buc Says:

Btw some of you are clueless. Downing DS , saying Cam Jordan owns him. Jordan plays predominantly on Wirfs side. At this point your just making crap up. Good rule of thumb. Never talk crap about a man who could squash u like a bug.

  35. David Says:

Damn. I knew he played damn good but that video was impressive.

Early in the year he had a handful of penalties and it was getting annoying but since that Saints game the O line has been awesome. Every single one of them. The only thing they need is depth.

    QB
    CB
    DL
    OL

In no particular order, that’s how I see the draft going in the first 4 picks.

I agree Joe, moving Wirfs is idiotic. He is a stud at RT, and Smith is a top 10 LT. There’s no reason to move either one.

  36. Bam Sav SSR Says:

Ion wanna hear none of that… get em out of here.
    ✌🏾

  37. Ramon S Gutierrez Jr Says:

As long as he’s been playing for the Bucs, this is his first playoff run. Maybe that’s what he needed to be consistent. I’m hoping that’s the case and he will play hard on Sunday as well.
