Scotty Miller Talks Deep-Ball Chemistry, Details Spring Work

December 15th, 2020

If you listened to Bucs receiver Scotty Miller talk yesterday, you heard a guy describe having roughly 35 training sessions with Tom Brady before the Bucs arrived for training camp in late July.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Miller, a Sunday hero against the Vikings, was adamant that he built superior deep-ball chemistry with Brady long before opening day.

With 28 catches for 462 yards, Miller decisively leads the Bucs in average yards per reception at 16.5, and he’s got three touchdowns.

“I really got to work out with [Brady] like three times a week for like three months before [the season],” Miller said. “A lot of other guys did, so we got to work out a lot of things.

“I view myself as a like a deep-ball player, big-play-down-the-field receiver. So [Brady and I] got to, you know, iron those things out and really get on the same page. He got a good feel for what I’m good at and kind of where to play the ball to me. So really we’ve been on the same page ever since [spring and summer], really. And we’ve been able to show a little on Sundays.”

Miller’s chatter intrigued Joe because he sort of put a number on how times he worked with Brady.

Simple math says three months (aka 13 weeks) at three times per week, is 39 practice sessions. For discussion, Joe will pretend Bradyand Miller (and other receivers) only had 30 sessions. That’s an awful lot of time, and it makes you wonder about all the endless chatter about Brady not having enough time with receivers.

Miller said he clearly understands his role but also hopes for a much bigger one. He stressed the great health of the Bucs’ pass catchers this late in the season and said he knows he’s battling for targets with a dream team.

“I just hope that I continue to get more opportunities,” Miller said.

Get rid of AB………………..Scotty Miller and Tom Brady obviously has a chemistry together.

    I equate it to this:

Jameis Winston & Mike Evans — They clicked because Jameis seemed to always throw “high-balls” and he knew ME13 could go up and get it.

Tom Brady & Scotty Miller — They are clicking cause Tom knows he tends to overthrow receivers and Scotty Miller has the speed to catch up to his over-thrown balls.

I for one have just excepted that Brady will continue to over-throw receivers because he’s not running a short/intermediate routes passing game. Brady holding onto to the ball longer has his head all screwed up and it may never be fixed. Doing 20 years in that Patriots offense has screwed Brady up something awful.

Route trees by the WRs during games and Brady being hit and pressured alot obviously contribute to the stuck in 2nd gear offense. Tom was not being knocked around in those underware sessions at Berkly Prep. GO BUCS!!!

    NFC Championship Game

    Brady – Rogers

Scotty Miller was a good 6th round draft pick…..so was Brady.

  5. Jim Says:

Miller’s grab meant a lot more than 7 points. It inspired and energized the team at a critical moment in the game.

  6. ClodHopper Says:

Maybe thats the deep ball problem. Brady is throwing it to slower guys but still throwing at Scotty’s speed. I’d be interested to know the catch percentage on deep balls when hes targeted vs anyone else.

He needs to be on the field more!

  7. Pablo Says:

Scotty Miller only played five Snap Sunday, but he made the most of it

  8. BucDan Says:

Why get rid of AB? On this particular play, the WRs on the field were Evans, Godwin, AB and Miller.

If you are playing defense or the defensive coordinator who do you sway your defense towards?

This was a great play by Tampa and I hope to see similar WR sets in the future.

  9. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Aren’t we lucky that Scotty Miller us our FOURTH best receiver? That is an embarrassment of riches. Most teams would be lucky to have Scotty as their #2.

Hats off to Jason Licht for assembling such a great receiving core.

Let’s work in some shallow crossings patterns!

  11. BucDan Says:

Correction for me – No AB on the play. It was Gronk that was in.

Still plenty of playmakers to choose from as a defense/defender.

  12. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I am less concerned about the ‘deep ball’ plays than I am the terrible throws I saw Sunday. Gronk, ME and Rojo and one other – Brady threw the ball 10 feet over their heads and Brady was NOT under that much pressure. Those 4 throws all contributed to quick 3 and outs.

  13. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

The pressure was obviously in his head. If you watch his feet after the defensive players get behind him, he looks like he wants to take off and run – or start a tap dance routine. He is definitely not used to the long developing plays.

  14. Ftmyersbuc Says:

Brady definetly is allergic to being hit!

BA and leftwich say oh he makes those throws in practice every day.

No one can touch him in practice.

And we all bitch about this, but consider this: i remember watching the saints and drew Brees earlier and being envious that he would hold the ball and not be afraid to take a shot therefore still delivering a strike.

Well it’s better to have some inaccurate throws from your hof quarterback than to have him holding a clipboard ami right??

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Brady needs to start paying more attention to Evans, Godwin, and Brate. He’s too fixated on his buds, Gronkowski and Brown. Hopefully, Miller will continue to be a focus of Methusaleh. 3 games left so we’ll see.

  16. BucEmUp Says:

I dont give a crap what anyone says about Scotty Miller. He has heart and top 5 speed in the league.in terms of getting down field off the ball. That guys deserves snaps over AB every Sunday.and if Brown crys about it cut his ass

  17. DRFEELGOOD Says:

All the Jason Light haters need to start recognizing all of the recent hits he has had in the draft. Other than the Vernon Hargreaves year, he has done very well IMO. If I am not mistaken, Miller was a 6th round pick (5th at the earliest). What a steal!!
