Interesting Accuracy Numbers

December 11th, 2020

“Don’t worry, Tom. I’m used to bad throws like that.”

Now if Joe asked if you the following questions about quarterbacks, your responses would be predictable.

If Joe asked if you wanted Drew Lock, then you’d probably say you wouldn’t want anyone dumb enough to dump a way cute billionairess who will someday inherit an NFL team. Understandable.

If Joe asked if you wanted Carson Wentz, you may pause in thought for a moment.

If Joe asked if you would want Baker Mayfield, you’d likely say you would need more research.

Yet the Bucs have a similar quarterback, which shocked Joe.

There is something called “bad throw percentage.” As the name suggests, the stat is a percentage of throws that are just plain bad. Off the mark.

These numbers do not count throwaways or spikes. This comes from the highly reliable Pro-Football-Reference.com. Here is what that site has for the best/worst quarterbacks with bad throw percentage.

Joe never thought Brady would be on that list.

Initially, Joe thought maybe they were counting throwaways, but that is not the case. The numbers are just off-target throws.

And it is not like Brady is getting worse. His 20.5 percentage of bad throws is exactly what he had last year.

And guess who was tied with Brady for the third-worst bad throw percentage?

Uh, oh.

Tom Brady’s accuracy has declined over the past 3 seasons … this is not even shocking … he’s 43 … the best of Tom Brady was the pats falcons super bowl … not saying Brady isn’t effective but the best of him is gone

  2. Sesteprenelicus Says:

Interesting that Winston would have the same rate of bad throws, and yet he had soooo many more interceptions.

  3. Ftmyersbuc Says:

    Are they counting int’s joe?

If so i know someone whose % would go up a bit last year.

But yes i notice Brady throws a lot of balls short, some over too. Not as accurate as he used to be.

  4. Joe Says:

    Are they counting int’s joe?

Does not specify. Only claims not to include throwaways and spikes.

  5. Bobby M. Says:

When Elway won his SBs, it was past his prime and very reliant on the run game with Terrell Davis. Same with Manning in Denver…..he was well past his prime but both were effective enough to get the job done. We dont need super star stats….we need effective. We sit 7-5 in the playoff hunt….that’s more then we’ve had in a long long time.

  6. Beeej Says:

Brees, Teddy, Dalton, rarely throw passes that travel more than 5-8 yards downfield

  7. Alanbucsfan Says:

Well, some stats are more telling than others and some are misleading.
The 4-8 Texans have the 2nd ranked QB in NFL ( Watson). And Roethlisberger’s stats are similar to Brady’s ( his yards per attempt is lower than Brady’s) and Steelers are 11-1.
Ya think Defense and OLine may have something to do with these rankings?

  8. Jmarkbuc Says:

How many games has Dalton played?

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This doesn’t surprise me…..now, I’m a Brady fan and I like him being our QB…..but I’ve been posting for quite a while now that Brady is shaky early in games…..and has been off the mark.
BL/BA are taking much of the blame for slow starts…..but, I’m afraid much of that rests on Brady.

Now….as far as bad throws not resulting in interceptions…..we know that Brady is careful to put the ball where only the WR can catch it….and sometimes the WR can’t….

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Alanbucsfan … “Ya think Defense and OLine may have something to do with these rankings?” I can see where the Bucs’ OLine might play a role in Brady’s 20.5% bad throws percentage because they’re on the field at the same time as Brady, BUT … exactly how does the defense (sitting on the bench) factor in?

@TBBF … :BL/BA are taking much of the blame for slow starts…..but, I’m afraid much of that rests on Brady.” I agree TBBF, much of the blame for our slow starts does rest on Brady. And IF he’s calling all his own plays, then I’d even say that MOST of the blame rests on him.

BUT … seems like I remember the ‘old days’ when a HC would’ve said ‘Knock that excessive passing crap off early in games and RUN THE FRIGGIN BALL MORE’.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

    DR-
When you get behind by 2 scores or more early in games, Bucs, in particular, tend to abandon run and force passing game – ineffective offense early in games doesn’t mean Defense has excuse to give up 3 scores or more in 1st half. If you’re always playing from behind because D can’t stop other team- it leads to forced throws. Not excusing poor offense play, it’s a factor, but the D HAS to keep you in the game always.

“All this country does now is blame

Always comparing to Americas forgotten QB locked up in the the basement at New Orleans stadium

Brady was throwing 3 ints per game until he threatened Leftwich bodily harm if he called another deep out pattern. Last year they kept on calling the ancient deep out pattern continuously

The offense is stagnant because Brady is not proficient in the deep seam pattern nor comeback patterns

BA/BL doesnt do slants or crossing patterns which is Bradys go to. Brady strives in the uptempo short passing game. A good running game is not needed because the short passes are an extension of the running game

    Like Kobe Faker has said

Its putting a square peg in a round hole

Brady under BA/BL ancient offence wont work and will never work”

  13. Cobraboy Says:

@allenbucsfan: The slow in and of themselves are not killers, but are frustrating. It’s the other team scoring while the O ineffectively sputters early on that is maddening.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

Some of Brady’s throws weren’t just bad, they stunk right to the opposite team who scored off them. Cost us at least 2-3 of our losses. No excuses Sunday. Jax, who only has 1 win all season, drove Vikes into overtime. Bucs better win Sunday. Period.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………….
    EXACTLY …… AMEN
Someone finally called it. Watch the play calling Sunday,if you can stay awake with BL calling the plays.
Brady knows what it takes to win a game, and has forgotten more than BL will ever know. Turn him lose with fast crossing routes and slants, along with Rojo doing his thing more than a hand full of times in a game.
Its time to grade BL’s play calling which dont impress me and there are fans on here pretty knowledgeable, and could do as good a job or possiably better than BL, I honestly belive
