Strong Pass Blocking

November 20th, 2020

Has time to throw.

A site a whole lot more respected than the one that hires dudes in their Irish dorm rooms to grade film notes the Bucs this season have fully destroyed a popular narrative.

The way some (habitually) holler about the Bucs’ offensive line, one would think park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Bucs quarterback Tom Brady has to run for his life each time he drops back.

That would be a very wrong guess.

Per Pro-Football-Reference, which is basically an NFL encyclopedia, the Bucs/Brady are tied for the third-highest average time to throw in the pocket.

It seems Brady has an average of 2.5 seconds of pocket time for each dropback. Pocket time is defined as average time the quarterback had in the pocket between the snap and throwing the ball or [when] pressure collapses the pocket.

Brady is way down the list of hurried quarterbacks, which is also good. He’s only been hurried 21 times.

The quarterback hurried most is Justin Herbert at 53 (and he wasn’t a starter to begin the season).

Now here is where the offensive line stats get a bit squirrely. Even though Brady is one of the top quarterbacks in time to throw and has few hurries, he’s getting hit a lot. Brady has absorbed 35 hits, fourth-most in the NFL.

Quarterback pressures you ask? Brady is middle of the pack at No. 13 (70), but if you look at the percentage of dropbacks Brady is pressured, he’s way, way down the list at No. 26, pressured on just 17.4 percent of his dropbacks.

Joe isn’t sure how to read the hurries stat? Unless it sort of points out that since Brady has such a quick release, he can wait longer before getting rid of the ball.

So far, even with a few bad games by an offensive lineman sprinkled in here or there this season, the amount of time Brady has had to throw even surprised Joe.

McWirfs is too nice! He needs to go!

Jk he seems like a great kid

  2. SlyPirate Says:

No surprise. Before the start of the season we all said Brady would make the offensive line better. Even OT Smith called it.

Brady analyzes defenses, adjust plays, has a quick release, and throws the ball away. Winston did the opposite. The result is less hurries, less hits, less sacks, less turnovers … and suddenly the offensive line vastly improved.

I’d like to see a history of how long the QB holds the ball under Arian’s “stretch the field” offense.

Seems most patterns take longer to develop than some O’s built on quick, short passes.

Evidence: as has been pointed out on numerous occasions on these hallowed cyber pages, Arian’s QB’s tend to take a lot of hits.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

Pirate – Well said. That is the difference See it nearly every play.

  5. BaltiBuc Says:

I believe TB12 has less hurries and more hits because he is standing in the pocket scanning the field right until he gets hit, instead of being “hurried” to move out of the pocket, which he basically never does while maximizing his read time and then taking the sack.

  6. Swampbuc Says:

Strong pass blocking, except if we’re playing the Saints, Giants, or Bears, or anyone that has a good D-line. Rams are obviously a big test. Leftwich hopefully doesn’t wait to see Donovan Smith collapse like a drunk before Providing him with help, proactively.

    Google “NFL TV Maps.”

What was the percentage in the Bear and Saint game for Brady getting hit and sacked. The Line got worked over. Wasn’t it ike 43-46% in the Saint game that Brady was under duress. Defense Rules this your territory. So numbers can be made to look a lot of different ways. But in these 2 games, the line was not up to snuff, and was 2 losses. This team is light years away from what they have been. But when we are talking about a championship it is a different story. In the Playoffs it is 1 and done if you lose. So hopefully they have these kind of games flushed out of their system. We will see real quick on Monday night if they have progressed at all. Because the kitchen sink is coming at Brady on Monday night. I think they will do much better, but we will see. It is Playoff preview against the Rams. GO BUCS!!!!!

    SPEAKING OF SAINTS GAME

Americas QB is actually the third string QB. Taysom Hill will start. There are posters in here outright seething right now.

    Bucsbro

That doesn’t mean much. Hill could start for one play. Please, oh please let Jameis play. he never met a pick six he didn’t like.

  12. Dano407 Says:

Rams DLine concerns me. This will be a very tough game. Another Prime Time versus a team with a very good DLine.

  13. Mike Says:

Wow, awesome to see Wirfs in action. He really is playing like an All Pro already.

  14. Mitch Says:

Jmarkbro – Adam Schefter reported Jamies is not apart of any packages this Sunday. Looks like Sean Payton is following through on his promise to Hill and we will really see if he is the second coming of Steve Young or not.

“Brady has absorbed 35 hits, fourth-most in the NFL.”

    He’s still not injured yet?

Mike Johnson surely this can’t be…

    Go Bucs!

  17. geno711 Says:

So are some Buc’s fans here going to hate on Sean Payton that he is crazy to give the start to Hill over Winston.

Some people thought some of us hated Jameis Winston.
No we just were tired of his mistake prone ways.
If he were clearly better than Taysom Hill, he would get the start.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Hmmm, 35 QB Hits & 70 QB pressures in 10 games.

    Game 1: 6 QB Hits, 7 QB Pressures, 2 Hurries … Loss
    Game 5: 8 QB Hits, 8 QB Pressures, 1 Hurry … Loss
    Game 9: 9 QB Hits, 15 QB Pressures, 6 Hurries … Loss

So that’s 23 of the 35 QB Hits plus 30 of the 70 QB Pressures occurred in just our 3 losses. Wow, and New Orleans & Chicago were probably the 2 best defenses our Bucs’ offense has faced this year. Whodathunkit?

    Game 1: 26 runs; 39 pass attempts … 40% run-pass.
    Game 5: 20 runs; 44 pass attempts … 31% run-pass.
    Game 9: 5 runs; 41 pass attempts … 11% run-pass.

Over our 3 losses: 29% run-pass. Here’s an idea to cut down on the QB hits, pressures and hurries: RUN THE FRIGGIN BALL MORE.

  19. Robert Says:

I have a feeling they have learned from the saints d and we will see a lot more short routes, screens and fournette back there. Hope so anyways. And then bombs away to AB when they creep up.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Arians’ QBs have always taken a ton of hits and usually been in the top-5 most hit QBs in the league. Go back and look at Jameis, Carson Palmer, Big Ben, etc…

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Mitch

I don’t believe much or anything that Payton says…..

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

Donovan Smith is a liability whether you want to admit it or not. He is not consistent, so you don’t know when he’s going to suck. Do you feel comfortable waiting to see which team he’s going to suck against and playing the odds? I don’t and the Bucs shouldn’t, either.

Sean Payton: Someone has been named the starter, but we haven’t announced

How dare you use data to back up logic. It would seem obvious..at least after you pointed it out to me. I’m just a fan though and it would seem the professionals could have figured that out especially against the Saints.

Just anecdotally…perhaps I’m mistaken…won’t be the first…but I have a DISTINCT impression that Brady is using more of his allotted time in the pocket.

Obviously I’ve never seen Brady as much as this season but my memories of him were than he was genius at knowing when to simply throw the ball away.
And it seemed he did it a LOT.

I agree with BaltiBuc that Brady seems to be hanging in the pocket longer this year. Perhaps our OL has actually won his confidence?

  25. Augsut 1976 Buc Says:

Thanks D Rules for the numbers. Time for the Bucs to man up and be balanced and run the Ball some more. Run ROJO Run, Hey Leonard, no dancing bear routine and be your sledge hammer self. BTW we all saw the Vikings run the ball down the Saints throat in last years playoffs. GO BUCS!!!
