Third Down Pressure

Though you wouldn’t have known it by the way the Bucs defense didn’t play Sunday night, normally on third down the Bucs swarm and smother quarterbacks.
Who says this? NextGen Stats say this.
The NFL’s official version of statgeekdom, NextGen Stats is raw data gathered from computer chips and sensors embedded into players’ equipment. And NextGen says only one team pressures quarterbacks more in third-down passing situations than the Bucs.
That would be the Steelers.
Pressure rate is defined as percentage of pass dropbacks where a defender gets within two yards of the quarterback at the point of the quarterback’s arm moving forward (or a sack).
The Steelers, on 44.4 percent of dropbacks, get a pass rusher within spitting distance of the quarterback. The Bucs are just a cat’s whisker away at 44.2 percent.

Would Joe prefer a sack over pressure? Hell yes! But Joe guesses getting two yards from a quarterback is better than letting the guy have so much time he could order a pizza.

Absolutely a sack is far better than pressure…..a sack makes physical contact with the QB……causes lost yardage and engenders psychological damage to the QB going forward…..
Now, if the pressure causes an errant throw/interception….that’s different.

“Pressure” didn’t seem to have too much of an effect on Brees last Sunday. Suggest more blitzing and one-on-one coverage in the future. You have to pick your poison: play zone and get picked apart if a four man front can’t get to to the QB or blitz and hope your cover man doesn’t get beat deep.

Saints had 9 QB hits and 3 sacks
Bucs had 3 QB hits and 1 sack
The OLine and DLine stunk – blame it on whoever you want- you don’t win when you get dominated in the trenches

How about dig up where the Bucs rank under that stat using ONLY the saints game and the giants game. You know….when they decided that their corners were not good enough to play press coverage anymore despite the fact that playing zone defense 10 yards back against a hall of fame qb is suicide.
I have to give Todd Bowles a pass here, and assume he will correct this very quickly starting this Sunday.
Leftwich on the other hand is either hot or cold. And the days that he is hot, he takes what the defense gives him. The days he is cold, he keeps trying to force his will on the opposing defense and they make him pay dearly for it every single time.
Just like with previous coaching staffs, it’s so painful to watch this unfold and wonder why the staff cannot see it on both sides of the ball. Perhaps if our DC’s called from up in the box or Idunno, maybe let the 6 time Super Bowl winning qb call the damn plays. The old days of football were all trenches and imposing your will. Now its a little bit of that mixed with creative motions and causing confusion pres-snap. The Bucs did neither the last two weeks.

Everyone is so down on the Team right now because of the Beat Down by the Aint’s. I remember the 1999 Team which went 11-5 won their Division. Missed going to the Super Bowl because of a bad call. They Went to Oakland in December and Lost 45-0 to The Raiders. Good Teams sometimes lose ugly. Even the Worst team in the NFL is pretty Darn Good.

On your point about pre snap motion and confusing the defense.
I’ll add to that thought, Sean Peyton called 18 different personel groupings against the Bucs.
Leftwich is blessed with weapons galore and yet we see no where near that type of creativity.
Back to your point about pre snap motion, Brady benefited from lots of pre snap movement in New England . If you consider the number of throws /attempts using the information He’s gathered before the snap it would seem that adding some motion would be of benefit.

Seems to me the whole tempo from front 7 to back 4 changed without him.
Could be worse though – just ask the Cowboys about their QB.
