Chinn Watch

November 12th, 2020

There’s a rookie who plays a lot of safety, leads the NFL in tackles among rookies and has a lot of people calling him a defensive rookie of the year candidate — and it’s not Antoine Winfield, Jr.

His name is Jeremy Chinn. He was the final draft pick of the second round, and he’s been the Panthers’ versatile rookie at 6-3, 220 pounds.

How versatile?

ESPN reported that Chinn, nephew of Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater, has lined up at 13 different positions: “right outside linebacker, left outside linebacker, slot cornerback right, cornerback slot left, right inside linebacker, left inside linebacker, free safety, cornerback wide left, right defensive tackle, left defensive tackle, cornerback wide right, middle linebacker and nose tackle.”

Joe brings up Chinn because he’s injured (knee) and didn’t play last Sunday against the Chiefs, when Carolina couldn’t slow down the Kansas City passing attack en route to their fourth straight loss.

It’s unclear whether Chinn will return Sunday against the Bucs, so Joe is keeping a close eye on the injury report. And, of course, Chinn likely won’t be 100 percent even if he does play. He was limited in practice yesterday.

Joe’s not concerned. Even with Chinn, the Panthers defense is very average at best, and when have the Bucs lost to a very average defense this season? They haven’t.

I think what surprises me most about the Panthers is that this was kinda, sorta supposed to be a rebuild year for them. They’re not a bad team. They only lost to the Saints by 3 points and to the Chiefs by 2 points. They’re a player away and a healthy CMC away from being a division contender.

Joe continues to disrespect the Panthers. They’ve lost a lot of very close games, you mean like the Bucs did for so many years?–Joe and the Bucs have not performed all that great against teams they’re supposed to beat (eg Giants). Bucs haven’t lost to a losing team all year.–Joe So let’s tamp down the rhetoric on how the Panthers are a bad team. (I know you are what your record says you are.) It’s the NFL – on any given Sunday and all that jazz. Just show up and exert your will on the other team. Come away with a convincing win this Sunday and then I’ll start to feel better about this club.

I hope the Bucs don’t under estimate the Panthers. After last week they should never underestimate anybody.

This kid’s good. Really good. I wouldn’t trade Winfield Jr for anybody though.
