Rough TV Ratings Locally & Nationally For Bucs-Saints

Hype apparently isn’t equating proportionally to popularity, at least not in Tampa.

How about this nugget from the New Orleans Saints official website regarding official TV ratings for Saints’ bludgeoning of the Bucs on Sunday night.

NBC’s broadcast of “Sunday Night Football” was the highest-rated prime-time show of the week. It averaged a total audience delivery of 18.9 million viewers before halftime, which is the most-watched first half of “Sunday Night Football” since Week 1.

The Saints market delivered a 45.7 overall household rating and a 63 share (percent of households watching TV that were watching the game). Tampa produced a 19.1 rating and 35 share.

Look that difference between the Tampa market, which includes the greater Bay area including St. Pete and Sarasota, and the New Orleans market. Let that sink in for a minute.

Sure, the Bucs-Saints game was popular locally, but Joe sure thought it would have done better.

SportsMediaWatch.com noted that the game was a bust for NBC, whose Sunday Night Football ratings are on a downward trajectory.

The Saints’ 38-3 rout of the Buccaneers averaged a 9.5 rating and 16.88 million viewers on NBC’s Sunday Night Football over the weekend, marking the lowest rated and least-watched Week 9 edition of SNF in three years (2017 Raiders-Dolphins: 8.6, 14.36M). Ratings fell 25% and viewership 23% from Week 9 last year (Patriots-Ravens: 12.7, 22.03M).

Traffic on this here website continues to bludgeon what some consider competition, but overall it seems the Bucs have yet to capture the hearts and minds of the greater community in a way they once did years ago. That will either take time or more wins.

I am curious as to the 1st half ratings vs the 2nd half. I know I didn’t stick around for another half of torture.

  3. DBS Says:

The team has a losing culture. When they do get in the playoff hunt or talks they blow that . So who in the new generation of people or transplants wants to watch or call this their team? That is why you see these results.

I rarely ever give up hope and turn off a Bucs game especially a primetime game but I shut this one off and went to bed with about 5 mins left in the 2nd quarter. It was easy to see that the Saints were a much more physical football team and dominating in the trenches.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

After our 1st 2 possessions of the 2nd half, I knew..the slaughter was on. I could see it in our mannerisms and we knew we were defeated. We will be ok. But that was quite a bad outing and sting on national TV.

I’ve followed the Bucs since 1978. This was the FIRST game I turned off in the 3rd qtr. Horrid! But, all-in-all it was a great week.

  8. August 1976 Buc Says:

Well the Bucs always have awesome ratings at my place. If they are on, then everything else is second lol lol GO BUCS!!!!

  9. View from 132 Says:

These QBs are boring. The NFL has moved on. Look at this unreal generation of QB talent on other teams. Mobile, accurate, and new. We’ve all seen Brees and Brady at their best, and it isn’t now.

  10. TOM Says:

They’ve had a losing culture ever since Gruden was fired. The Glazers deserve what they got. Unfortunately it carries over to the fans.

A snooze fest flashback game that the Bucs specialize in pulling out of their hat a bummer of a showing. Feels familiar though.

Streaming question are negligible when comparing to other markets. The fact remains that The fat people in New Orleans love their team more than we do and it shows up in the ratings. People in New Orleans know how to stream as well…
