Of all the horrors that occurred Sunday night at the Den of Depression, one largely was overlooked by fans but not by Bucco Bruce Arians.
Visiting SiriusXM NFL Radio today, the head coach of our beloved Buccaneers emphasized that he wants to see his team return to penalty-free football, in addition to turnover-free football.
The Bucs had nine penalties for 103 yards against the Saints, but that certainly didn’t cause the 38-3 beating Tampa Bay received.
Before resuming Sunday, the Bucs’ penalty issues had been fixed for weeks. They had really cleaned up their early-season mess, and the Bucs now average 6.0 penalties per game. Nine teams average more, and six per game isn’t too bad at all, though penalty totals are down across the NFL this season.
Donovan Smith leads the NFL in penalties with eight. Carlton “Flags” Davis has seven total and leads the league in pass interference calls. He’s also had one or two penalties that were not accepted.
Among the nine teams sloppier than the Bucs is the pass-rush-challenged Panthers, losers of four consecutive games and the Bucs’ next opponent. Carolina averages 6.4 penalties per game.
The good news is the Bucs collectively have proven that penalties are something they can fix. So Joe expects a much tighter game on Sunday. And as for turnovers, well, it’s hard to imagine Tom Brady continuing to throw picks.

That game was just one of those games. Like the butt whooping at Atlanta a few years ago. That game was worse than this. The packers are still the roast of the town and we scored 38 unanswered against them. I don’t what it was seemed more game plan to me. I hate being outcoached. And that is what that game came down to. Like an earlier post. We should have stayed with 2 tight ends and worked brown in. I just hope this was a game of arrogance where Bruce was just trying to prove everyone wrong on ab and forced him into the game plan reverting from the normal. But in joes defense that fits right into what he was worried about. If we wouldn’t have signed that game would have been a lot closer. Granted we still lose but respectfully. But hopefully this is one of those games that opens eyes and makes them realize you have to make positional players fit your scheme. Not change your scheme to fit your skill players. And then talk about 4 reciever set the whole week before the game. I hope this knocked arians down a peg or two. And he makes ab warm and fit into the offense for now on. He could take scotties place in the offense and we would be a pro bowl player better. Don’t be cute with this to prove doubters wrong.

I don’t know if it makes any difference but watching the game I kept getting the feeling man the saints seem to know what was coming both on offense and defense. Then it dawned on me, there’s someone on the saints that knows our offense and defense very well. Winston is an invaluable person to help Peyton come up with a game plan both on offense and defense. Maybe it means nothing, but it could explain the but whipping.

That was the perfect storm for the Saints. Not only did they come in and execute their game plan flawlessly they occupied space and were living in the Buccaneer’s head the entire game. The Buc’s had no answer and I do believe Winston’s knowledge gave the Saint’s the advantage. Leftwich and Brady should lean on the run game until the ship get’s righted and the offensive line finds their mojo. I think getting Marpet back will be the linchpin for a stellar game against the Panthers.

Chipbuc, good theory till you realize Sean Payton, and the Saints have been beating us long before Jameis got there. They are going on their 4th division title, Jameis just got there.

We simply have to have more discipline on the Dline…..stop the offsides…
D Smith’s holding penalty negated a good Rojo run early in the game….could have made a big difference in the outcome.

I’m fine with Davis’s flags. At least they’re penalties where he’s being aggressive.
The Smith ones are ridiculous and lazy.
