Joe Haeg Would Replace Ali Marpet
November 6th, 2020What Bucs fans feared is nearing reality.
Stud Bucs left guard Ali Marpet could sit out the big game Sunday night against the Saints. A concussion is the cause. Marpet entered the league concussion protocol following the Bucs edging the Giants on Monday night, and he’s not cleared to play.
Bucco Bruce Arians sounded a little down about that prospect this afternoon an noted that newcomer Joe Haeg, an offseason free agent signing from the Colts, would fill in for Marpet. He’s got a load of starting experience, but Joe has to assume if Haeg were true starting quality, then he’d have gotten a multi-year free agent contract somewhere for solid money. He’s on a one-year deal with the Bucs for a little over $2 million plus incentives.
Regardless, Haeg is healthy and has been solid for the Bucs in action already as a sixth lineman. He’s well rested, too, playing very few snaps as the Colts offensive line avoided injuries last season.

I would rather him have to replace one of our guards then one of our tackles.
Not ideal but could be worse.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:39 pm
Damn. I was afraid this would happen.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:40 pm
He will not be filling for LT, he will be filling in for LG.
HUGE HUGE HUGE DIFFERENCE on the OLINE
Job opportunity and future paycheck for Haeg about to happen
November 6th, 2020 at 12:42 pm
The other scenario he mentioned (which i prefer) is to move Jensen to guard and Shipley play center. Either way I believe they’ll hold up in PP but the run could suffer somewhat. They need to stop running up the gut so often and one of these backs has to be consistent catching the ball out of the backfield.

Mr JOe’s…is this is confirmed, or is just a read between the lines on what BA said?
Thx
November 6th, 2020 at 12:48 pm
This will be a huge loss. The Saints D-Line is what usually wrecks us when we play.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:49 pm
zzbuc this is confirmed Arians said it himself.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:52 pm
This will be a huge loss. The Saints D-Line often takes over the game when they play us, causing huge momentum shifts which usually ends in a fat L.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:53 pm
WAIT MY BAD
Sorry no it’s not confirmed but Marpet has to clear protocol. Arians is implying.
November 6th, 2020 at 12:57 pm
thx Tampabuscsbro…..
November 6th, 2020 at 1:03 pm
this should bring out ndog and realist…lol…
regarding the bad news, next man…i have faith in goodwin….he improved cappas game…haeg will do for a game or two…
GO BUCS!!!!
November 6th, 2020 at 1:09 pm
Brady just needs to get the ball out fast. I wish we would do more screens and more up tempo to counter the saints pass rush.
November 6th, 2020 at 1:35 pm
Next man up.
November 6th, 2020 at 1:36 pm
Might as well find out now how he plays, never hurts to look to the future.I know he’s playing left guard but if they are thinking moving on from Donovan Smith next year at least you can get a preview.
November 6th, 2020 at 2:16 pm
Ok haeg go out there and pull and shine like perriman did but just don’t want you starting more than one game
November 6th, 2020 at 2:31 pm
it’s a mandatory 5 days in the protocol, so he could not be cleared until Saturday night. So Haeg has practiced.
Still a chance he could be clear by Sunday night.
We’ll see.
The Saints are missing Rankins from their DL, and he’s been a stud.
So there’s that.
November 6th, 2020 at 2:34 pm
You play with who you got…..Haeg was signed exactly for this situation……the good news is that if Marpet misses a game….it will likely only be one game…..if it were an ankle, hamstring, knee….it would be more.
November 6th, 2020 at 2:59 pm
I hope Marpet is okay.
November 6th, 2020 at 3:01 pm
Haeg should be fine from a pass pro perspective, but not sure he’s going to move the pile much in the running game. We probably will need to run more shotgun and 3/4 WR sets and just open it up more in the passing game.
November 6th, 2020 at 3:28 pm
Coach just needs to remind the players what the Raiders starting OLine looked like, and how they played. Surely these guys are better than that.
November 6th, 2020 at 3:33 pm
Hope he clears protocol last thing we need is markets rendition of Bobby ray from varsity blues lol
November 6th, 2020 at 4:36 pm
Hopes dashed!
Marpet out.
November 6th, 2020 at 4:47 pm
Haeg was expendable in Indy, but he was a starter.
No, he is not Ali Marpet, but he is no slouch either.
We will be ok
November 6th, 2020 at 4:55 pm
Sheldon Rankins was put in IR. Does he line up on Ali or Cap normally?
November 6th, 2020 at 4:58 pm
Joe Haeg is not a slouch. He started as a rookie in 14 games, played in 15. His next year he started all 16. The year after he was also a starter, but had an ankle injury in game 3 and was placed on injured reserve. But he did come back in December and started 2 games. So he was a starter with the Colts, and a real Swiss army knife, as he can play guard or tackle, on both sides. So he is better than replacement level.
November 6th, 2020 at 5:55 pm
They will overcome this, the Bucs are about to be 2 games up on the Saints by the end of Sunday evening. I expect the Bucs to play a clean game not like first game in NO. The better team will win. The Bucs beat the Bucs last time they played. That Aint going to happen this time. GO BUCS!!!
November 6th, 2020 at 6:04 pm
@Mitch: Cappa. LDT.
November 6th, 2020 at 6:06 pm
Haeg is much, much better than Camp Meat. He may not be Marpet, but he’s not a 3rd string turnstile.
November 6th, 2020 at 7:10 pm
Next man up baby..no excuses. Nobody cares around the league. All they want to know is..did you Win? Get well Ali, Batter up Joe Haeg and good luck.

I get it. You hated him 4 years ago and you hate him now. I’ve seen a lot of hate thrown his way, but this guy is a consistent winner and an overachiever.
Call it jealousy, call it envy, some people just can’t handle how successful he is and how much money he has, could even be jealous that he’s got a hot foreign model as a wife. That’s what people who support him love about him. Yes there have been some scandals, yes there have been some lies and maybe a few times he’s twisted the truth to make himself look better. He’s out there everyday proving those haters wrong time after time. You may not have wanted him in this role but he’s there now and there is nothing you or I can do about it. I know it’s possibly going to get worse over the next several days, but like him or not, Tom Brady is turning things around in Tampa Bay.

Thank you, Cobraboy
November 6th, 2020 at 8:33 pm
If he cant get the job done it will be one of the few blunders we made thiss offseason. Since Arians has got here we have done really well in the FA market so Im expecting a solid game from Haeg.
GO BUCS!

Run to the right side, problem solved.
November 7th, 2020 at 3:06 am
I think putting Joe Haeg at LG would be similar to putting Cappa at LG. He’ll do ok but you can count on the defense to exploit his and Donavan Smith’s shared gap responsibility, maybe forcing Donovan to overcompensate and focus to much on the inside while making him vulnerable to an outside pass rush. Donavan Smith has enjoyed the luxury of having Marpet cleanup his right side. If I were Leftwich I would be leaning on rushing either gap to the right of center, especially with Gronk next to Wirth. In the passing game I would consider even design having Brady roll to his right more often just to give him more time from the inevitable pressure from the left.
November 7th, 2020 at 10:32 am
Well, I didn’t care for the signing of Joe Haeg. Let’s hope he has at least one good game in him.
November 7th, 2020 at 4:13 pm
He’ll be fine, I’m expecting Jensen will help him cover the A gap and they’ll put a TE to the left to help Donovan so that he can cheat and help with the B gap. But, honestly, Haeg is a grown as$ man, he can hold it down well enough. Like others have said, at least we’re not replacing a T.
Onyemata is a 3-tech while Malcolm Brown is a 1-tech. I think we’ll be fine as far as pass pro. I’m not so sure about run blocking though, but we weren’t all that good in week 1 blocking for the run anyway.
We will be fine.
