It’s been 20 years since the ferocious Bucs defense of 2000 crushed quarterbacks for 55 sacks, an eye-popping total that further cemented the Glory Days defense as a force of its generation.
But guess how many sacks the Bucs are on pace for this season?
Tampa Bay has 25 sacks through seven games, which means it’s on pace for 57 sacks. And that’s with Shaq Barrett with just three sacks through seven games.
It sure helps to be leading in games and giving the defense a chance to tee off on opposing quarterbacks. For example, take Devin White’s crushing hit on Derek Carr yesterday, his third sack of the game. It happened when Carr was scrambling midway through the fourth quarter and desperate to make a play to get the Raiders back in the game.
The Bucs sacks have been coming from all angles, with Jason Pierre-Paul leading the way with 5 1/2 and a whopping nine players have more than one sack.
The balance, diversity depth of the Bucs defense has been so impressive. The loss of Vita Vea has meant nothing on the field, the linebackers are everywhere and the young secondary is taking advantage of the QB pressure.

We should be able to rack up some sacks Monday night…..
I like it when our sacks are spread around……that is much more difficult for teams to handle…
Devin White (savior) looked like an absolute terror on the field Sunday.

Found out the place I’m staying will have cable…hopefully ESPN. Not sure what I’ll do to watch otherwise. Unless my app loads up the local channel while I’m accessing it out of state.

It would be nice if Shaq started getting more sacks. JPP is already on pace for 10+. If Shaq wants his big contract, he needs to produce more.
JPP and Suh may not even be here next year…which will clear up the money for Shaq if he earns it.

Not sure what changed with Shaq, but he needs to find a way to get the QB. With the reduced salary cap this coming year, I don’t see the team resigning him if doesn’t produce 10+ sack this year.

Shaq is going to get his sacks. It’s just a matter of time. The good news is that he is effecting the game by applying pressure. He may not get the sack, but he’s moving the QB off their mark.

Agreed Bucsfanman. I rewatched the game last night, and Shaq affected no less than 4 throws significantly. He’s making an impact, even if it doesn’t register on the sack stat sheet.
That Devin White stop on 4th down was the knockout punch! It’s so fun to have a defense that can deliver devastating plays like that.

Shaq is extremely disruptive and very good against the run. He’s a big part of why RB’s can’t get to the outside. Speed is what this defense is built around and he’s extremely quick. Wins are what we’re after and this defense is truly a “team” when it comes to how they play. They’re disciplined and they don’t break protocol to try and be a hero. They take care of their assignment and if a sack comes, great. If not that’s OK. Just do your job and get a win.

Common dougyballs. I am thrilled with Devin White. But stop with the Allen hate. He set a rookie sack record and made the probowl. He is not racking up sacks while on the bench hurt. They are both good players.

It does not matter how great a QB is. If you pound on them, and ragdoll them, your chanes of winning dramatically increase. If they can hit at least 50, that is championship level. I believe 60 at least. Because with the leads they will have, and teams not being able to run, teams will have to pass. Yes it is still valuable to stop the run. The D is starting to lick their collective chops. Pin the ears back boys, it is time to meet at the QB. GO BUCS!!!

The leading games comment – is a good comment. This Bucs offense is LIGHT YEARS better than that 2000 offense. Love A-Train and I love Dunn, but it’s a joke of comparison. This offense can simply rush out to a lead – can throw up a 20 spot any time they feel like it by halftime and peel their ears back. Most importantly – for as good as the Tampa 2 was at that time, it was a co derivative defense. Lots of zone, 4 man rush only. Frankly we SHOULD be getting more sacks now

Like Tampabaybucfan said, it is way better to have it coming from many different players. They are game planning against Shaq because he can wreck a game, like he did to Carolina last year. This D is legit and will continue to get better. David Carr said that his brother Derrick Carr said to him that the Bucs D was a faster version of Broncos D of a couple years ago. That is high praise indeed. He should know, he had to face that D 2 times a year. And he just played the Bucs and had to endure a beating. GO BUCS!!!!

Shaq has value even without as many sacks……he just won’t get paid as much…….many won’t ……we need to scrape up enough money to pay LVD & Godwin…..

When Vita Vea comes back you’ll see Shack production start raising again. I believe Vita helps Shack game. Do not underestimate Vita Vea’s impact to our defense.

As longs as the sacks are there, who cares who makes them? JPP and Shaq draw attention so, somebody else will take credit…..
That’s one one of the biggest assets on Bucs defense, Versatility….Vea goes down and Mc KLendon makes impact…. Shaq or JPP gets covered the sack goes to White or a CB or Gohlston or Suh…….that’s 100% on Bowles…..I remember not long ago, I would say three weeks ago, when everybody was mad on Bowles…..

Protection packages by opposing teams will change. OCs can see that getting their QB outside is a dangerous proposition. Backs will be kept in to stop the ILB blitzes. That will open things up for both Shaq and JPP.
The 19.5 sacks last season was an anomaly, but 10 is almost a miracle for the Bucs, if two or three players reach that place, it will be a miracle. The name of Simeon Rice can finally be put to rest.
I still think Bowles is lining the DBs up too deep, too often; he is starting to move them in and out, so it is getting closer to being QB mystifying.

I want Danny Dimes badly!!! Hope they wear his ass out sacking him all game. Last year’s game was a ball buster. Sitting in the stands and watching this rookie eat up our defense. The 20+ yard run up the middle for a TD still irks me to this day. Hope the Bucs Defense is feeling the same way I am…

No Vea left a big hole!! I see a big difference that was being made up for by great linebacker play…. BUT…. McClendon did an awesome job and more than made up for the run defense quality that Vea brought to the game!!! But none of them can make up for Vea speed, strength, hustle and QB pressure!! In fact the reason it looked like Carr had all day to throw is because there was no pressure up the middle forcing him out!! They held the middle of the field to form a perfect pocket all day on passing downs!! Your crazy if you don’t think Vea makes a huge difference in that game as far as passing downs go

Good for JL signing Shaq to a prove-it year. 2019 is looking like it was an outlier year. 10 games to go to prove he is 15+ Sack machine worth $20M.
