The Auburn Secondary
October 22nd, 2020Former NFL suit Michael Lombardi calls the tandem of Bucs cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean as “The Auburn Secondary.”
Of course, that’s where both Bucs corners played in college. And if they continue to ball out like they are this year, Joe’s going to have to call those two something else, like “rich” or perhaps “Pro Bowlers.”
Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com pumped out interesting info on the Auburn Secondary. Davis, a third-year corner, is tied for the league lead in passes defensed with 10.
This is not much of a surprise to Joe. Davis often covers teams’ No. 1 receiver. So naturally he would have more opportunities to defend a pass.
In his last 22 games played, which dates to the start of 2019 season, Davis leads the NFL in passes defensed with 29.
This is where Dean comes in. In that same time span, Dean has 23 passes defensed as a part-time player. That places him second on the list behind Davis.
Say what you will about the “Auburn Secondary,” it is making Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele proud.
(Joe has long been an admirer of Steele. Joe thinks the guy is one of the most underrated defensive coaches in big-time college football. Everywhere he goes, not only does he build defenses but he pumps out talent, especially linebackers and defensive backs.)

I have always thought you are much more likely to get big time players from big-time programs. There are plenty of players from small schools who excel and go on to huge careers – however – It just seems to make sense given the competition. Or maybe it’s just an odds thing – right player drafted to perfect team??

Bowles played zone against Rodgers in the first quarter Sunday. The very series he switched to man, this secondary showed their skills and dominated. These guys have ball skills. Should be playing man 80%of the snaps.

Wait, you mean the same two guys that finished top 5 in passes defensed last year AND held opposing QBs to 50% or less completions are now sufficient for Joe? Between the inability to see the production and potential last season of our three young CBs and our young RB, one would think the Joes aren’t actually watching the Bucs.

How about some interceptions now? If he would have had an interception in the 4th quarter against Chicago versus 4 “pass defensed” we probably win that game.
