“That’s Where His Growth Has Come”

October 20th, 2020

Cornerback Jamel Dean entered the 2019 NFL Draft with first-round speed and raw talent.

The questions surrounding him were much more about durability and production.

So far, after a rough early-rookie baptism that followed injuries, and the break he caught against Arizona, Dean has been all about production. He’s broken up a mind-blowing 23 passes and snagging three interceptions in his last 13 games — and he doesn’t even play full-time like Sean Murphy-Bunting and Carlton Davis do.

He had the game-shifting pick-6 against the Packers on Sunday, and Dean has made his mark inside One Buc Palace with his work ethic.

Bucco Bruce Arians laid that out on WFLA-TV yesterday.

“He’s got all that talent. You know, he’s here every morning watching film with Todd Bowles. And I think that’s where his growth has come,” Arians said of Dean. “He’s understanding the game better, but I mean, guys that show up at 5 o’clock, 5:30 in the morning and want to meet with coaches, that’s a really good sign.”

Just stay healthy, Dean, and keep working. And Joe will say it again: Stay healthy.

Now that’s (early work time) is an impressive stat.

    great to hear…

    player development….player preparation….thats what its all about…

    on to LV….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. Brandon Says:

Said all offseason that this is the best trio of young CBs in the NFL.., right now they are playing like the best trio of CBs in the NFL. Best trio in the league, right now, here in Tampa, and I don’t think it’s even close.

  4. Mitch Says:

It seems the secondary has spent a lot of time in the film room this year. I believe have read about kudos being given to each Davis, Dean, & Winfield for their study habits off the field so far. Glad to see it translating in the game.

  5. GUadalajara, Mexico Fan Says:

Dean must pull Sean Murphy-Bunting to those very early meetings with DC to review films. In the last games I have seen Sean Murphy-Bunting a little lost in the field.

  6. Jonny Says:

Our cbs can be stars if they play with composure. Both Dean and Davis have an issue of getting too handsy because of fear of giving away big completions. They need to have more faith in their athleticism and positioning and play the ball instead of tackling the receiver before the ball comes to him.

  7. Mike Says:

    Mitch,

Best CB trio should be the Patriots with last year MVP, Jones and Jackson.
The Bucs trio should consistently cut down the flag.

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

So much for those who insist the Bucs aren’t building for the future.

  9. firethecannons Says:

all 3 of those cornerbacks should be watching film at 05 dark 30.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

He played well against GB, but he was bad in the first two games. That’s why 23 has more playing time than him.

  11. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

You are absolutely right about this one Joe!! He had some really serious injuries!! Right in a row on BOTH knees!!….. If you watch his college tape tho he seems to be playing a lot different in his foot work now that are maybe designed to cut down knee impact?? … He also I believe had 2 picks in his first pre season… This guy is a play maker!! Sometimes he has a break down at the worst moment and loses BIG on the play but I will take those plays here and there for the momentum changing plays he makes far more often!!

  12. Doctor_Berto Says:

So can he begin starting instead of SMB?

  13. SlyPirate Says:

I remember when Kwon started that early film study. He leveled up big time. You’d think more guys would do it.

  14. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

More and more Joe will realize Arians is not part of the Lost Decade.

Arians created the shift to respectability to the Bucs.

Last year the foundation/defense was built.

If not for the Saints 3rd string QB, playoffs were very reachable.

  15. Mike Says:

Dean has won the outside starting CB job IMO. He just needs to play well to keep it.

  16. Darin Says:

    Atta boy beat the traffic!

  17. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

I agree with those stating above that Dean should be starting on the outside with Davis. SMB might be our 6th best DB right now.

  18. orlbucfan Says:

How about the other players like Jordan Whitehead? The defensive secondary succeeds as a group.

  19. DaBux Says:

This kid flashed potential at Auburn. Bowles is just now coaching it up to an unreal level. Seriously, with good luck on health, etc., we could have the best group of DBs since you know when.

  20. teacherman777 Says:

    Hes a true CB #1.

He should be starting. Not Sean Murphy Bunting.

  21. Anonymous Says:

Been telling y’all since he got his first snaps against the Seahawks last year… the kid has straight up instincts for the ball.

Highest ceiling out of any of our cornerbacks.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Been telling y’all since his first game at a Seattle last year that this kid has skills. You can just see his instincts for the ball.

Highest ceiling out of any of our CBs in my opinion.
