“I Didn’t Think Their Corners Could Handle Those Wide Receivers From Green Bay”
October 19th, 2020Two generations have passed since Father Dungy coached the Bucs.
But he still pays attention, especially since he lives in Tampa and his ex-roommate is their head coach.
And what Dungy saw before yesterday’s game told him the Bucs wouldn’t fire off an array of blitzes at Aaron Rodgers.
He was wrong.
“I didn’t think they’d come out blitzing because I didn’t think their corners could handle those wide receivers from Green Bay,” told the Sunday Night Football audience. “But when it showed that they could, boy, that just brought more and more pressure and it amped up. And you could see Aaron Rodgers wasn’t comfortable, I think the first time all year that he had people around him and in his face.”
Joe finds Dungy’s take quite interesting.
Bucco Bruce Arians has said multiple times that Carton “Flags” Davis is a top-10 corner, but apparently Dungy disagreed and didn’t think Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting were up for manning up.
Murphy-Bunting had his challenges, but certainly Dean and Davis proved Dungy wrong. Not only did they play well; each turned in a huge play.

Secondary is growing. Still need to have more awareness in zone coverage, especially SMB. Too much guarding air instead of latching to the man passing through your mark or the WR just camping in the soft spots and making catches.
Get stickier in zone and this secondary starts to get real scary!

this is PLAYER DEVELOPMENT!!!!!!!

Just my thought but I think #24 is the weakest of our corners but still think in time he will get better

^^^Weakest!? You crazy mang.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:19 am
Carlton weakest corner? Um…Are you watching the same games we are?
October 19th, 2020 at 9:20 am
It’s over. Every player needs to stop basking in the glory of doing his job and get focused on the Raiders.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:26 am
Davis Island Babyyyy. this guy is legit making himself one of the best corners in the league.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:28 am
I’d say SMB is the weakest link back there, especially in zone.
These guys are all young though, and still learning how to play as a team. Yesterday was great for their confidence and swag.
Now I want to see us as a team continue to play SMART football too. Zero penalties should be our new goal for every week.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:29 am
no idea where you get “weakest” from…..
i would say he’s the leader of the secondary….the young guys seems to respect and follow him…
GO BUCS!!!!!
October 19th, 2020 at 9:43 am
Obviously Vita Vea has been holding this defense back……😂
October 19th, 2020 at 9:45 am
Carlton Davis was our best corner last year too. These guys are just starting to come into their own and play as a unit. Our rookie safety doesn’t play like a rookie.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:52 am
The greatest contribution from our corners yesterday was what you didn’t see…..and that’s footage of the coverage……Rodgers had no one to throw to many times…….
Ours safeties played very well also…..And, I’m starting to like Mike Edwards.

aw
not sure what you’re talking about…the “weakest” discussion started with this:

@AwShbucs
Thank you Thank you for clarifying what I meant and my point.
October 19th, 2020 at 9:58 am
Edwards needs to get more time and Whitehead maybe a bit less, especially in passing situations. Edwards is a ball hawk.

813 he obviously meant his play. There were several plays in the first quarter where SMB made awful mental mistakes on crucial downs that led to easy completions for GB. I’m a big fan of Sean Murphy-Bunting. Have been since I watched his college gametape. He’s a big long corner with elite athleticism and last year he was probably our best cornerback. But he isn’t having a great season this year. He needs to start making some plays.

I agree time to get ready for Oakland Gruden will have his boys prepared.
October 19th, 2020 at 10:17 am
I thought Ariana was full of it when this summer he said Carlton Davis is a top 10 corner. He wasn’t lying! He covers opposing teams’s #1 receivers and has held them all to under 100 yards.
October 19th, 2020 at 10:18 am
The corners’ play was key. Kudos to them. Keep it up!
October 19th, 2020 at 10:23 am
Yah.
Is dean making case to start opposite Davis
I mean a lot of teams run 3 wide so both will see plenty of snaps
Competition is a good thing
Carlton is obviously CB#1
October 19th, 2020 at 10:36 am
Tony needs to shut up and mind his business
October 19th, 2020 at 10:57 am
I’d hyped up the CBs all offseason despite Joe and others wanted veterans to come in and take up valuable practice reps for young players. I pointed to Davis and Dean both being top 5 in passes defensed and both allowing QBs under 50% completions and I also touted SMB as perhaps the best of the three. Dean and Davis have not disappointed. SMB might not be 100%. At the beginning of the season I thought he was playing the best of the 3… now he seems to be having the most struggles.
October 19th, 2020 at 11:12 am
When Aaron Rodgers lost his Tackle, you could really see the frustration in his face.
October 19th, 2020 at 11:29 am
I’d 100% have Carlton get flagged once or twice a game for being “too physical” as opposed to him playing off the ball and giving the receivers a huge cushion. Play aggressive, play hard, accept the results.
October 19th, 2020 at 12:22 pm
If you have not seen Dean in person at a game or practice standing next to the other DBs you have NO idea how BIG the guy is!
October 19th, 2020 at 12:55 pm
For crissakes, this is Bowles’ SECOND season coaching here. His defense is making tremendous progress. Compare it to Dungy’s second year, and I have yuge respect for him. Isn’t SMB playing hurt? That would affect his playing if the other two being talked about here are healthy.
October 19th, 2020 at 1:47 pm
SMB does not play well in space while in zone coverage
That’s 2 weeks in a row where he gave up multiple catches in his zone responsibility & he wasn’t even close. In fact he has been turned around…
He needs some more work
Was anyone else nervous when Winfield went down…
Edwards is no Winfield although he had nice tip pick…
Dean has to be on filed more
October 19th, 2020 at 4:44 pm
SMB doesn’t have his pop yet, he is still injured. He plays at 75 percent. .He will get back to form. Sit back and enjoy the show.
October 19th, 2020 at 7:12 pm
I’d rather have players exceed expectations vs fall short of expectations. Anyways go watch the San Diego game and watch those non-name WRs catching bomb after bomb and you can see why there is/was doubt. Just keep proving yourself and people won’t doubt you.
BTW, go watch the 2003 playoff game vs SF, the stupid broadcasters were talking about how the Bucs defensive backs were the weak part of the defense and they wouldn’t be able to contain TO. Well Barber destroyed Owens in that game, kept him in check all game and literally took a pass away from him which was returned for a TD (called back because stupid Rice did a personal foul away from the play). But the 2002-03 Bucs defense was by far the best in the league, they are the best passing defense in the history of the NFL and had shut down everyone, so to have the idiots on FOX talking about the Bucs pass defense not being able to contain TO was literally one of the dumbest things ever said by any broadcaster.

Between those 3 and Whitehead & Winfield ( and Maybe Edwards) this secondary is pretty good and just getting better and better.
I think a big difference, in time, is going to be Winfield. He is already acting like a leader out there telling people where to go and position themselves!
