Four-Man Rush Blues
October 12th, 2020The Buccaneers’ offensive line had a four-frowny-face Thursday night and the numbers reveal it was worse than it looked.
A stat that’s been bellowed on NFL Network is how many times Tom Brady was “pressured.” The total number was 19 and 16 came from a four-man Bears pass rush.
That’s a putrid stat line and it’s a reason Brady didn’t complete a deep throw. When your opponent can rush effectively with four guys, that leaves lots of coverage on receivers down field. (Yes, Tyler Johnson and Rob Gronkowski had completions over 20 yards, but there was plenty of yards after catch involved to disqualify them as deep plays.)
Mike Evans averaged eight yards a catch and Scotty Miller was shut out, despite playing 45 snaps.
It was disturbing seeing the Bucs’ offensive line get outmuscled like it did.
Joe will attribute some of it to playing on the road in a short week. But that’s a flimsy excuse. At bedtime tonight, Joe will hope the Bears’ pass defense really is as good as it flashed on Thursday.
October 12th, 2020 at 4:19 pm
Brady’s 3 Super Bowl losses were die in large part to pressure from the defensive line. Thursday’s loss was one of the worst feeling losses in years. Losing VV was brutal as well.

Bah
October 12th, 2020 at 4:23 pm
I know Wirfs had a couple of miscues and Jensen had the stupid penalty but the number being called by the refs and announcers keeps ringing in my head…..Number 76, number76, number 76 and again number 76.
October 12th, 2020 at 4:26 pm
76 looked like a matador
October 12th, 2020 at 4:32 pm
76 played poorly, I just don’t get it why he can’t at least seem to look invested into the game. Wirfs is going to have some rookie games. a big issue is the plays we call should have focused on getting the ball out faster against a team like chicago. we did not do this.
October 12th, 2020 at 4:39 pm
76 has become my most hated Buc of all time. He surpassed Aguayo. Congratulations to 76 for his immense ineptitude. The factors that contributed are lack of skill, lack of desire and lack of brains.
October 12th, 2020 at 5:00 pm
But he’s always available…..
I’m with many here I’m tired of Smith want him gone. They’ve been talking about his potential for years. Just like Winston’s knock on him coming out of college was turnovers. Smith’s knock was taking plays off and loafing. Jameis didn’t correct his and got let go and hopefully the same will happen with Smith end of this season. I truly wish he’d opted out that way Tristan could’ve went to LT and we could’ve used someone else at RT. Now it looks like we’ve gotta draft a LT because I hope they don’t switch him after his rookie year of him and Cappa developing chemistry on the right side.
October 12th, 2020 at 5:01 pm
More posses at the false starts by #76, which is just a lack of concentration since there is no real crowd noise or it was fear, trying to get a jump on their pass rush. As far as really getting beat by Mack, he is not the first and won’t be the last, Sacks did not cost us the game, we got sacks and even forced a fumble (which we couldn’t recover)
October 12th, 2020 at 5:06 pm
D Smith would have to make a miraculous turnaround to prevent being cut or traded in favor of drafting a RT & moving Wirfs to LT….
We will certainly need the 14.2 million for LVD & Godwin…..
I’ll give some credit to Chicago……
Scotty Miller being shut out is shocking….what happened to his WR screens?
A silver lining….I think Tyler Johnson is going to be very good….
October 12th, 2020 at 5:10 pm
Dirty jersey for Tom and Bucs go nowhere. Clean jersey and they will be fine, even with mash unit offense. They will either draft a LT or sign free agent but things will change for the 2 nd highest paid LT. GO BUCS!!!
October 12th, 2020 at 5:43 pm
Smith has 7 penalties this year already, our rookie Wirfs has 3. Doesn’t say much for veteran leadership and experience.
October 12th, 2020 at 5:54 pm
But didn’t the head coach tell us the only reason the sack numbers looked bad last year was because the previous quarterback held the ball too long?
October 12th, 2020 at 5:58 pm
Jensen really screwed up when he didn’t enforce the borderline PF when Mack slammed Brady. – That was the time to go nuts.
Then on the next play (I think), Jensen gets the PF when it meant nothing and helped deflate that horrific drive with the most O-Line errors we’ve ever seen.
76 just looks uninspired and lazy almost every play. It’s like he doesn’t play to the whistle. Not sure why… it sucks.
Love Wirfs technique and “want to”.
Kappa is still figuring this thing out but he plays hard.
Marpet & Jensen need to step-up and stay nasty between the whistles.
Let’s Go!!!
October 12th, 2020 at 6:02 pm
All I know is that Brady was brought in to make everyone better. Including coaches. But we are only equal to or worse than last year at this point in the season AND we had VH3 starting corner
There is this crazy stat going around, saying, from 2016 to 2019 we had 2 100 yard penalty games. This year alone we had 2 already
October 12th, 2020 at 6:17 pm
Last year the Bucs were 2-3 after 5 games, this year, 3-2. That is better.
Anyone who watched the games and knows anything about football knows Jameis held the ball too long. No matter how much you love someone, there’s no denying it.
October 12th, 2020 at 6:19 pm
Well half the penalty yard were garbage so…….
October 12th, 2020 at 6:34 pm
Yes 3-2 is better than 2-3 just like Succop is better than Gay which is the difference between the two records.
Oh yeah that and the running game and defense.
October 12th, 2020 at 6:42 pm
Different season, different circumstances. And as Joe noted on an earlier post, JW played his worst in the middle and latter part of the season. So a lot remains to be seen.
October 12th, 2020 at 6:42 pm
As much as I dislike Sean Payton…..I do respect him for sitting Michael Thomas for punching a teammate in practice…….that took some courage but that is the kind of discipline that makes for a winning team.
October 12th, 2020 at 6:47 pm
On a completely separate note in our division we have S. Payton who’s clearly one of the best coaches in the league. It looks like the Panthers got a good coach in Rhule and now the Falcons happen to have an opportunity to get a new coach that might turn their franchise around All the while we’re stuck with Mr POS, lying, backstabbing Arians basically with no hope for the future, great job guys!
October 12th, 2020 at 6:58 pm
There is plenty of hope. Hope for the next 11 games, and hopefully a playoff berth. I don’t think of “hope” as being bad word. Without hope, you have despair.
October 12th, 2020 at 7:04 pm
i will say this again, smith will end brady’s career prematurely, he is going to get him killed, so here is the solution it’s really quite simple, wirfs has played some left tackle in college, we put him at left tackle, put heage at right and let smith be depth, next years draft get the best left tackle available, and put wirfs back on the right side, trade smith and get rid of his contract, somebody would love to have him because of his durability if nothing else, and would be willing to pay for him, whether that would be a player or draft pic’s or both, that would clear up alot of cap space to bring in another quality pass rusher to help shaq, easy peasy japanesey
October 12th, 2020 at 7:24 pm
FOR THOSE OF YOU: Who think rational people no longer exist in this world, here we go:
2019 JW | Through 5 Games
Record: 2-3
Yards: 1371
TDs: 11
Ints: 5
Long Pass Avg: 43.4yds
Sacks: 18
2020 TB | Through 5 Games
Record: 3-2
Yards: 1475
TDs: 12
Ints: 4
Long Pass Avg: 43.4yds
Sacks: 8

The numbers look pretty close don’t they?
Except for the sacks.
There is not a Jameis hater out there that can’t honestly admit that the kid was “game” and wanted to WIN!
But he would, in-fact, hold onto the ball way too long resulting in many heroic big plays, but also huge turnovers (fumbles included), horribly timed sacks and a lack of complimentary football.
This is HOW it really was guys, it happened and NO it wasn’t all Jameis’ fault.
_________________
Jameis isn’t here now and that’s life in the NFL.
We do have Brady though and so far he’s playing pretty well with banged-up weapons.
We’ll all see how it pans out won’t we and we can spend all offseason comparing the two QBs.

Go Bucs!
October 12th, 2020 at 7:26 pm
In both N.Y.Giant Super Bowl losses, Brady put Patriots ahead with about 3 minutes left in the game. Belechick’s defenses came up lame . Bucs need to get the money up for 2 bad boys. Earl Thomas who will bring leadership and an infectious swagger to a mediocre secondary and Antonio Brown once his 8 game suspension is over. AB is a top five receiver even with a year off and has a relationship with Brady. The super Bowl is in Tampa. Do it now.
October 12th, 2020 at 7:26 pm
Damnet. WHY COULDN’T YOU HAVE OPT OUT 76?!!!
October 12th, 2020 at 7:27 pm
Time to move on from all the negative cry baby bullshiiiit
October 12th, 2020 at 7:34 pm
@chickster
You’re 100% correct!
Now (especially October 2020) is not the time.
October 12th, 2020 at 7:35 pm
*is not the time to be negative about football when your team is 3-2.
October 12th, 2020 at 7:39 pm
Leftwich doesnt know how to sxheme based on a defense. He believes that even if a defense knows what is coming that you can still convert if executwd properly. I comptey disagree and thing in a situation like that where our oline was gassed and couldnt protect the playcalling should have adjusted to try and take somepressure.off of the blockers. Up until thursday this oline was ranked pretty high…sometime you have to coach your way out of a bad situation.
October 12th, 2020 at 7:49 pm
ElioT don’t post tht you’ll ruin ndog six post in this thread. You know he’s very selective on which articles he post.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:00 pm
The above comparison may be true, but everyone knows that JW3 threw for
400 yards in game 6 last year. Why don’t you include that game? There you go Ndog, I’m helping you out.

October 12th, 2020 at 8:40 pm
I see lots of JBFers chewing on Donovan Smith for excessive penalties, but if you look at his record, might shed some light on how he really performs.
Donovan came into the league in 2015 (with Jameis) and according to what I find, he hasn’t been that bad penalty-wise.
2015: Games – 16 … Off Snaps – 1,090 … Penalties – 10
2016: Games – 16 … Off Snaps – 1,134 … Penalties – 13
2017: Games – 16 … Off Snaps – 1,059 … Penalties – 8
2018: Games – 16 … Off Snaps – 1,115 … Penalties – 6
2019: Games – 15 … Off Snaps – 1,056 … Penalties – 5
2020: Games – 5 … Off Snaps – 345 … Penalties – 6
His first 2 years were pretty bad (almost as bad as Dotson), but he reduced his penalties quite a bit over the next 3 years. Not sure what’s going on this year, but looks like he’s regressed in that area. Maybe feeling more pressure protecting The GOAT?
October 12th, 2020 at 8:48 pm
DS is not a good as we want him to be (ProBowl) and also not as bad as he is made out to be. Some bad plays for sure, but if everyone is just noticing now how he whiffs so many times, it is because for 5 yrs the last QB was mobile and overcame with scrambles, and yes some fumbles and INTs. Brady just goes down in self preservation mode so the whiffs are highlighted more prominently than in last few years with real concerns that Brady will eventually suffer a pancake injury.
October 12th, 2020 at 8:48 pm
ElioT what you conveniently didn’t post was the fact in those 5 games last year we had exactly zero 100 yard rushers whereas this in 5 games we already have 3. That slows down the rush and we also are throwing the ball on much shorter routes including much more crossing routes and routes to the backs. But again let’s just push false narratives as that is what the head coach does so it must be ok right?
October 12th, 2020 at 8:59 pm
Here comes NDog once again it’s always someone else’s fault for Jameis.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:00 pm
Also Npup we ran all over the 9ers and it was still your boys fault we lost that one.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:03 pm
If the Saints lose tonight (Currently 13-3 Chargers) I present to you…………
Your 1st place (underachieving) Tampa Bay Bucs!
October 12th, 2020 at 9:19 pm
At this rate America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston might be replacing Drew Brees!
October 12th, 2020 at 9:27 pm
We would hate 76 less if he made $750,000 a year!
October 12th, 2020 at 9:47 pm
NDogTurd, what you’re conveniently missing is everyone on here is tired of your #3 noise.
October 12th, 2020 at 9:50 pm
Watching MNF… What is it with most teams turning super conservative on offense and defense within 2 minutes of each half… Drives me nuts! Should be 27-3 right now Chargers, instead 20-10… Conservative coaching is just asking for the other team to get back into the game.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:05 pm
NDog, I’m doing my best to not fail to mention anything.
I think you know football, you obviously spend a lot of your time doing research.
But you seem to want to turn every post into defense of JW.
BTW: I’m not a JW hater, at all. I think he’s the best QB our team has ever seen, but a change needed to be made.
You must know this man.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:18 pm
Ndog,i get ya!
However ,the last few games when Jameis big contract/ future with the Bucs.
He threw some horrendous ints ,which probably went a long way towards not giving him a solid offer.
Enough finally got to be enough !
October 12th, 2020 at 10:26 pm
Actually I know that the Bucs made one of the biggest mistakes in NFL history to throw away a player like Winston for a statue, selfish premadonda like Brady.
And I am not attacking you ElioT you’re all good, I’m just pointing out a factor that you left out that is impactful when evaluating the subject.
BTW I wouldn’t say we ” ran all over” the 49ers last year as the running backs ran for a grand total of 108 yards COMBINED!!!
Also don’t twist it in that OJ caused a pick AND fumbled in the redzone. That in addition to that on back 2 back plays before the OJ fumble Jameis threw 2 TD passes that were both called back by penalties.
Again Jameis is blamed for total team failure
This why I am holding Brady accountable for everything this year cause that’s what everyone did to Jameis all 5 years he was here.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:31 pm
Wideleftandright, bro he was playing with a torn meniscus, broken throwing hand, without Evans, Godwin and Miller. In addition if he had a kicker that didn’t totally suck, and is currently unemployed, we would have won one if those two despite those above mentioned factors.
So you are really telling me we based our entire future on those circumstances?
If so we have crappy decision makers.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:33 pm
Wideleftandright – Re- JW comments – my 2 pennies – those last 2-3 games, it was stupid on the part of “JW camp” to play. Playoffs were toast, he was injured (knee and throwing hand) and His stats were decent enough to earn a contract extension.
History cannot be rewritten….but had he sat out those last few games….
October 12th, 2020 at 10:34 pm

Isn’t it funny when someone tries to make a point but makes a point for what he complaining about. An idiot is born every second!
October 12th, 2020 at 10:50 pm
951 I’m not sure how you missed his point but it was that if Brady was brought here to make players better how have we already had as many 100 penalty games in 5 games that we had in the last 3 years.
Come on bro you make this to easy.
October 12th, 2020 at 10:59 pm
Famous Bill Parcells quote: “You are what your record is”. The Bucs are 3-2. Last year they were 2-3 at this point. Facts. Anything else is an attempt to spin it that the Bucs are a worse team than last year. Sorry, another fail by the naysayers.
October 12th, 2020 at 11:10 pm
Donovan is having his worst year in a slightly above average career (sad to think that he is our second best tackle ever). Jenkins is solid. Marpet is good. Cappa is below average and Wirfs is a rookie, that has looked like a rookie at times, but also has shown great potential. Mack is one of the best and treated our tackles like children at times. Rojo ran for over a hundred, so I don’t think that everyone on the line was outmuscled so much as outclassed.
I hope that Licht and crew are doing their homework on college tackles/guards and potential free agent tackles/guards.
October 12th, 2020 at 11:12 pm
Yeah I thought it said rushing yards. I’m a moron. It’s been a long day. I stand corrected
October 12th, 2020 at 11:22 pm
Chargers winning FG hits uprights…..no good…..OT
October 12th, 2020 at 11:37 pm
Anthony Lynn should just save the organization the trouble and fire himself
October 12th, 2020 at 11:40 pm
Dude Herbert looks great. Balled big-time in every game he’s played but lost all of them once again proving judging a QB by wins and losses is foolish.
October 12th, 2020 at 11:51 pm
If Herbert had a losing record 5 years from now, then can him
October 13th, 2020 at 12:20 am
Herbert is a stud and Mike Williams is too!
LAC is a team that fights and I hope they hang in there.
The Falcons & Jets wish they had a team that fights like that.
October 13th, 2020 at 12:30 am
@Buczilla
Smith is our second best tackle ever? Why?
October 13th, 2020 at 5:22 am
The NFL, not for long. We’re not locked into Brady past next year. Arians certainly will hang it up by then so for the crowd that wants a rebuild the day isn’t far off. Arians might not make it past this year if he fails with Brady. Josh McDanials anyone? Jameis has a five year record here, Brady won’t. We’re on a 2 year joy ride. We’ll see where it leads.
October 13th, 2020 at 5:36 am
Between getting beat, and penalties Smith is killing this offense. At some point he needs to be benched. Every player is going to get beat, but Smith leads the league in drive killing penalties. Better to put someone in who at least doesn’t kill drives. This may sound crazy, but I bet Gronk could do a better job.
October 13th, 2020 at 5:39 am
@ElioT
I’ve been following this team for over 30 years and other than Gruber (obviously), I can’t think of a tackle that we’ve had that’s better than Donovan. I guess that someone could make an argument for Kenyatta Walker, but that’s a big stretch. Jeremy Trueblood was decent at times, but not as good as Donovan. We just havent had a lot of good tackles on this team. If you can think of someone that I am missing, then I am all ears. 😇
October 13th, 2020 at 6:03 am
This story was about the OL, right?!
It’s obvious to me, anyone with eyes really, that the Bucs need to start looking at other options at LT.
The fact is that, overall, the TEAM didn’t play well and the OL led the charge. We can point our fingers if we want to but the blame can be applied mostly to coaching, IMO.
I’ll ask the same question I’ve asked for five years straight: If the run-game is working (17 carries 104(?) yards), WHY is Brady dropping back 40+ times?!
Gee, let me think of a way I can get Khalil Mack MORE opportunities at getting to the QB. Brilliant!
It’s football coach! It is NOT complicated.
And, to the point of the story, isn’t running the ball a QB’s AND the OL’s best friend?!
October 13th, 2020 at 6:46 am
after the season they’ll somehow try to swap out d smith for a real left tackle that somehow becomes available…
dump a 14 miller and bring in a 10 miller if possible…
or move wirfs and draft another tackle, left or right…either or…
and have money for free agents like godwin, etc. too
October 13th, 2020 at 6:47 am
it’s kinda like d smith has tater tots dancing thru his head when it’s game time…
his head isn’t in the game, it’s in the toaster oven…

October 13th, 2020 at 6:58 am
The o-line is littered with avg play…..Cappa is good, not great. Smith is avg and seems disinterested. The rookie is solid for a rookie but he’s going to have his up and down moments. I’ve said this from the beginning with Winston, you really have to have a top tier LT if you want any consistency at QB. When the QBs blindside is randomly exposed, that’s where bad things happen which then starts leading to the QB being a tad to quick, not allowing plays to develop.
October 13th, 2020 at 7:04 am
He is playing like he doesnt want to be here….oh wait he actually doesnot want to be here. Number 76 had his hand up to take the season off before it was even an option.
October 13th, 2020 at 10:52 am
We all knew that besides safety the offensive line was the biggest weakness on the team. The talking heads were quoting PFF and telling us that our O-line was good, not great but adequate to protect Brady. It only takes one weak link to make the chain break. Now it wasn’t all on him, but in the second half when the Bears front four turned up the pressure good ole Donovan Smith showed up and not in a good way. Call it lack of focus, taking some plays off, whatever, the man plain and simple is not a good football player. When the wheels came off it was like the whole O-line started to panic and collapsed. It was a regression to things we saw in 2018. To me the reason this game was so unsettling is the way the offensive line played when it mattered most. They got manhandled, plain and simple. I am not sure if anyone has looked but we are playing some teams coming up that are a whole lot better than the Bears. It ain’t looking good at the moment.
October 13th, 2020 at 10:58 am
Buczilla: I’d put Roman Oben on my list. Far from great, but a solid LT who started on the Bucs Super Bowl team.
October 13th, 2020 at 12:05 pm
@Joe in Michigan
Roman Oben! Ya he was pretty decent and deserves to be mentioned.
October 13th, 2020 at 12:12 pm
You know, now that I think of it, you could probably make a case for Donald Penn being better than Donovan.
October 13th, 2020 at 7:41 pm
Yes, Donald Penn was pretty good, too.
