Terrible Discipline

October 9th, 2020

WWE stunt backfires.

You can sum last night’s loss up in two words: terrible discipline.

And if Joe had video of the worst of the worst, it was Bucs center Ryan Jensen going full-blown Kamala the Ugandan Beast of wrestling fame and head-butting a Bears defender.

That’s just real intelligent.

Now Joe likes Jensen and his ornery style of play, but there is a razor-thin line between being aggressive and being downright dumb. And this head-butt stunt was flat out stupid. A high school kid would get benched for that.

How in the hell could a veteran NFL center, knowing full well the league has its antennae up over hits to the head, think a head-butt would be tolerated?

That’s just it: Jensen wasn’t thinking. He lost his damn mind.

Joe knows that Jensen must psyche himself up to play with an edge or he gets beat up. He’s admitted in on podcasts. OK, fine. But playing with an edge and playing without your brain are two different things.

Jensen’s wrestling schtick well after the whistle was just a highlight of the most undisciplined, ugly possession of Bucs football that Joe has seen since Julius Peppers got inside Kenyatta Walker’s head — and the fool of a Bucs right tackle couldn’t finish a play without doing something stupid to Peppers and getting caught.

The Bucs led 16-14 with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Bucs had the ball on the 50 with a very good chance of pulling away from the Bears. Instead, the refs pulled out their flags play after play.

In a 16-play drive that saw the Bucs get a first down while losing a net two-yards, the Bucs got hit with five penalties (perhaps the zebras felt sorry for the Bucs and flagged Khalil Mack once in that drive to maybe make it look like they were somewhat objective).

That is the turning point in the game if you ask Joe.

Joe is not a blame-the-refs kind of guy (but Joe will holler about that bogus late-hit call on Shaq Barrett). If the refs are calling it tight, you are supposed to be a professional. Adapt, adjust and overcome.

Jensen wasn’t the only culprit. But damn if his penalty wasn’t a flashpoint. Park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady was caught by FOX cameras being outraged after that drive on the sidelines. He had every right to be livid.

This Bucs team isn’t going anywhere if they make horse manure penalties like this in close games. That’s just begging for a loss. And that’s just what happened Thursday night.

No more pre season excuses. This team is sloppy and poorly coached.

What a crushing defeat and Vita likely being out for the year puts us in a terrible position.

  2. AwShbucs Says:

Refs decided who was going to win before the game started and they succeeded in giving it to the Bears.

  3. Clean House Says:

Ugly football- should have stuck with the run

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Turnovers, Penalties & Special Teams…..that’s what most games come down to…..and we severely failed in the Penalty category….

  5. Buc1987 Says:

    3-2.

  6. Dreambig Says:

To add to Joes comments, how many points did Donovan Smith cost us? You know the snap count ahole. Just stop with the false starts already. And the D? Why the F can’t we cover the edges of the field? Two games in a row our D was out schemed. Bowles needs to stop reading press clippings on how great he is and pay attention on how he is getting his a*ss kicked. We so could have won this game. Now by Sunday, we’re back in second place behind NO.

  7. REDZONE BA Says:

@Tbbcucs3 – THANK YOU!!!- so tired of the BS pre-season excuses. Bucs have the most brilliant and decorated QB under center.

Ref-crap? Please? Bucs HAD this game and blew it!

my dream for this season, is turning into a nightmare, say it ain’t so joe!!!

  9. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brady was caught by NFL Network cameras being outraged after that drive. He had every right to be livid. It looked like it was aimed at 66 Jensen. Jensen has to clean up his game, and yes it was a flash point Joe. Jameis got in his face last year, but Jameis had to many screw ups to command respect like Brady does. Jensen is a decent player but it is time to quit the same crap he has been doing since he got to the Bucs. Hopefully Brady can finally get Jensen to mature and play much better. It is one thing to be an enforcer and another to cross the line and just make stupid penalties. GO BUCS!!!!

I didn’t see the replay of the head butt. The replay I saw barely showed their helmets touching. Am I wrong to assume it wasn’t that bad? Seriously question, everyone.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Except they weren’t calling it tight.

    They were calling it one-sided.

You already mentioned the bullchit flag on the late hit. What about the blatant false start that was called as encroachment instead??

Both those drives would have been over right there without those BS calls.

14 points off of completely bogus penalties that would have been punts otherwise

  12. unbelievable Says:

    @951- you are correct.

I was expecting way worse when I heard the announcers say he head-butted him.

  13. Joe Says:

As Joe pointed out in the story, the NFL is hypersensitive to anything near the head. Jensen surely knows this or he’s had his head up his rear for years and Joe doesn’t believe that.

There was no call for what he did. Yeah, 40 years ago that’s nothing. It ain’t 40 years ago.

  14. Bucsfan951 Says:

“As Joe pointed out in the story, the NFL is hypersensitive to anything near the head”

I guess they missed the one where our returner nearly had his head turned 180 degrees by a face mask.

Not blaming you or calling you out. I’m simply saying it’s funny how he barely touches his helmet, gets a flag, but the back judge misses a blatant face mask. Funny how those things happen 🤷🏻‍♂️

  15. Colonel Angus Says:

Weakest head butt I’ve ever seen. More like a touching of the face masks. Terrible call that changed the game. Refs are like bad cops and there is nothing we can do about it. Makes it hard to watch games.

  16. 407buc Says:

Penalties Penalties…. How about poor offensive playcalling and execution. Or a soft defense? This team is cruising toward a nice and comfy 8-8 season. Glazer family should liquidate and sell the team by 2021

  17. Colonel Angus Says:

Right Bucsfan951? Like how they missed several late hits on Brady, especially the late one at the knees, but they call it on Barrett, who hits the QB clean as he throws the ball. I’d rather get beat straight up, can’t take it when the refs impact the game like they did tonight.

  18. ElioT Says:

Jensen acted the fool on that play because he was embarrassed that he didn’t enforce on that earlier play with the off-setting penalty (Thanks D. Smith) where Mack slammed his QB.

No excuse, experienced winning football players don’t do stupid s**t like that in a close, winnable game.

Then I think Kappa added another penalty right after.

Worst offensive line performance on any drive I’ve ever seen.

Brady was going nuclear on their a**es on the sidelines.

  19. teacherman777 Says:

    They couldnt stop the run!

Why did we stop feeding Rojo?

    Byron sucks.

    Let Tom call the plays.

  20. Jason From Jamrock Says:

morn all. the STENCH of losing!!
it is going to take some time to get the “losing mentality” out of the Bucs culture.
    Jensen doing his “fooliness”;
    C. Davis getting too handsy with the receiver when the ball is lofted in the direction of the receiver etc.

NOW we know why D. Smith is an ironman. He stays away from any pileups and only makes his initial block – i.e. he pushes the defender away from his own body.
I mean he releases his defender only to see Brady behind him and of course – IT’S TOO LATE!

    BUCS BEATING the Bucs.

GO Bucs. All is NOT lost.
    LET’S GO

  21. Kalind Says:

I like ya joe. I do. But that “don’t blame the refs” line is idiotic.

If you watched that game and said “yea, that’s a fairly called game,” you’re either and idiot or lying. Pick one.

That was unquestionably the worst quarter of officiating in my lifetime. It ruined a good game. And frankly, the Glazers should demand answers and accountability. That crew should never be allowed to officiate a Bucs game again. Ever. Want to protect ‘the shield’???? Stop making people at home assume the refs are gambling on the game.

That was incredible. Just incredible. The entire Bucs organization should be demanding answers and furious with the league office today. And they should do so publicly.

At least then the fans would know the top of the organization gives a sh!t.

  22. DBS Says:

Don’t forget the holding call on Jenson. Even on the replay. Who and what was he holding? Announcers did not like that one either.

  23. Clinton Roche Says:

That game was lost by the Bucs, but was 100% effected unfairly on the refs part. Two bogus drive extending penalties, and that Jensen penalty was nothing and should not have been flagged. It was absolutely called ones sidedly.

  24. Nick Says:

Lets be realistic, unlike last week, the Bucs DBs when they gave up a completion, it was mindblowing close coverage. Bucs DBs have their hands and coverage right where they need to be. Law of averages, those are going to turn into incompletions and picks. this was one game, and were 3-2, 2-0 at home. Not trying to compare, but Super Bowl Bucs lost one game per 4. Lets get our starting WRs back then see where we are. The Optimist approves this message! I

  25. $acbuc$ Says:

Trade D.Smith to Dallas for a draft pick because they lost both tackles. Insert Wells before Donovan gets Brady killed. Move Cappa to center and Jensen to guard because we need Jensen power blocking the 3 tech. We got some good DT coming in like Aaron Donald and the dude on Green Bay is no slouch. Tristan got his welcome to the NFL moment he will play better. There’s no making Donovan any better Licht trade him now.

Whats wrong with getting Mohammed Sanu…..?

Where’s is Joe Hoeg?….why we can’t shift the line if they practiced multiple positions in Training Camp…Let’s try Wells -LT- Marpet-LG- Cappa-C- Jensen- RG-Hoeg-RT

  26. Ryan Jensen’s Hair Says:

    Joe…….. Joe………..Joe…

We had words and bodied up. Calling that a head butt?

    Hyperbole and very Karen-esque.

One PF since 2018. 3 penalties last year.

You’re entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.
