Lockdown
October 7th, 2020Is Bucs third-year corner Carlton Davis becoming a lockdown corner? Some stats suggest he might be close if not already there.
Davis has been on a string of shutting down big time receivers: Michael Thomas, DeAndre Hopkins, Julio Jones. Not so much Keenan Allen last week but the Bucs defense as a whole wasn’t exceptional.
Jenna Laine of ESPN dug up stats on Davis and per NextGen stats, which is data pulled from computer sensors located on players’ equipment, receivers going against Davis this season aren’t averaging squat.
Carlton Davis has allowed 0.6 yards/coverage snap this season (second-lowest among outside cornerbacks with a minimum of 60 coverage snaps, per @NextGenStats).
Coverage ranks among DBs (min. 15 targets): 41% tight window target rate (5th), 4.8 yards/target (6th)— JennaLaineESPN (@JennaLaineESPN) October 7, 2020
This is interesting for Joe in that earlier this week, former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms said, based on his film study, each week he has noticed on tape that Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has been granting Davis more and more trust to play like a lockdown corner. And that Davis has upheld his end of the bargain.
Is Davis a top corner in the NFL? Well, he is still a bit too handsy for Joe. Each game you can pretty much bank on him getting called for holding or interference.
But you know what? Joe would much rather have a flag than see six points racked up on the scoreboard (like he allowed in Denver).

the name of this article made my heart stop for a second joe. i saw lockdown and assumed covid and quarantine given all of the news today and last week from around the league. bucs fans suffer enough, please watch your language! haha

chris L- i know! that headline was misleading… curious to see how this COVID crap pans out for the rest of the season.
October 7th, 2020 at 11:45 am
chris
kinda thought the same…thought OBP was on “lockdown”…lol…
we gotta keep our home grown talent….
GO BUCS!!!!

5 – 10 years ago those penalties would have bothered me.
Not so much now. There is defensive holding and/or PI called on pretty much every single team every week at some point it seems.

You mean to tell me players get better year to year, but I thought this was the exact same defense we had last year with four rookie starting in a brand new defense. Right YoungBucs, 813, JimmyJack the exact same defense right? They are the exact same players they were this time last year right fellas? Yet here’s proof players improved, look at that, who would have think it? Oh that’s right me!!!!
Man it feels good to be right over and over and over and over and over again.

Best corner we had since Revis. By far
October 7th, 2020 at 11:53 am
Agree, but we have to stay that he is a penalty prone too….
October 7th, 2020 at 12:04 pm
He shut down Hopkins last year, and Allen on Sunday, that is no small accomplishment.
October 7th, 2020 at 12:10 pm
his PI on Sunday was BS
October 7th, 2020 at 12:17 pm
“Keenan Allen not so much?”
I think CD held him to 63 yards! That’s quite good. Maybe not like holding Michael Thomas below 50 but still quite good.

I thought the same thing Chris; Joe scared me for a second (but then I thought he was just getting warmed up for Halloween). Davis is having a Pro Bowl year thus far IMO, but so is Dean. Carlton has been targeted 16 times this season, but has only allowed 9 completions (56%) for only 91 yds. That’s a Pro Bowl rate IMO.
Dean though isn’t very far behind. He’s been targeted more in a lot fewer snaps (targeted 20 times but allowed only 13 completions (65%) for only 133 yds). The CB who’s been picked on the most has been SMB … targeted 22 times and allowed 19 completions (86%) for 263 yds. The Chargers especially focused on SMB a lot more than our other CBs (8 targets for 8 completions and 132 yds) and I think that’s because he’s still not at 100%. Getting burned for 2 TDs is never a good thing, but I’m still not sure that he should’ve been out there (played 100% of the snaps BTW).

ndog
this is the same player that picked up where he left off from last year….the second half of the season is when the defense came together….
you know, thats when JW threw most of his INTs…
some players like JW get worse…those are called BUST
GO BUCS!!!!!

Ndog: Winston turnover’d himself out of Tampa, and into third string in NO.
Get over it.

Joe I hardly think its a question anymore if hes a lockdown corner. Just look at the names on that list he has shut down. Thats production. His work just speaks for itself.
The penalties I honestly dont care about. Almost all of them are borderline. You can’t not care about penalties. They’re as good as allowing the catch. If he builds a repuation for penalties (he leads the league) then more could follow. Davis had a lot of penalties in college, as well.–Joe He plays his man physically and is probably what allows him to shut down great recievers. I will like him to do noting differently. If he has to take a penalty so be it. I will take it if he is shutting down a great reciever in the process.

It’s called no holding calls this year and a RT that was not both undrafted and on his last legs. Also helps to actually have a running game to keep defenses honest.
______
Except Revis wasn’t good for us.
October 7th, 2020 at 1:39 pm
Joe had all of us in a panic hahaha just something to get the blood flowing this morning haha. Really like what CD is doing. He does get to many penalties but it’s hard with the rules that you can’t even look at a WR wrong without getting a penalty. Keep it up CD.
October 7th, 2020 at 1:46 pm
Joe: I’d agree that he’s a bit to handsey at times, but would I rather have him playing 10 yards off? How did that workout? The refs let guys with a reputation get away with more. Just watch Ramsey. Let him build his rep and then see what he can do.
October 7th, 2020 at 1:59 pm
We traded down with the Bills when they picked QB Josh Allen & we got Carlton D & MJ Stewart both in round 2. Josh is a beast of a QB but I am glad at least Davis
As he seems to be a good DB…
October 7th, 2020 at 2:37 pm
Lockdown? What did Jameis do now? Sorry couldn’t resist.
Carlton is a top 10 corner now. Maybe not elite speed but he’s got enough, and he’s strong enough to throw people off their routes and not get bullied on 50-50 balls. Loved the pick when we made it, the SMB pick was the head scratcher but he sure has grown on me too.
October 7th, 2020 at 3:11 pm
Pup you know who didnt improve year over year? Your man crush and Sp*nk bank material. You know the guy who grabs woman when and where he wants, throws picks non stop and no team wanted even as their back up.
You keep talking about all the areas bucs have improved. Like majority said when Brady was signed, he will make every part of the team better. And thats what you are seeing. I love how you try and spike the ball like you are right on everything. The only thing you need to prove you are wrong is he isnt a starter for one other team in the league and not even a number 2. Now haul ass and go back to the bathroom and handle your winston business. Just dont moan his name too loud.
October 7th, 2020 at 3:13 pm
Ndog wanna beat every player down cause winston a bum. When you have to beat others down to big somebody else up guess what that means.
October 7th, 2020 at 3:17 pm
I have a serious question for you guys let’s be honest. Who in here actually truly had faith in Winston during gms. Not me yes I was rooting and hoping but I can honestly say I was always scared when he passed.
October 7th, 2020 at 3:19 pm
look ndog. we get it. you like winston. fine! but its over bro. he’s gone, he’s not coming back. you would think that if you’re really a bucs fan, you would just be happy that we ARE improving, that we’re winning, and that it’s possible something special could happen this year. so if you actually are a BUCS fan, enjoy this! its been a long time since we were consistently competitive! and if you’re a just a winston fan, go to the saints fan page and start trying to stir up some unrest about brees arm strength and lobby for jameis. but seriously dude, move on man!
October 7th, 2020 at 3:32 pm
You guys are making Joe’s day with all the comments about the headline!
Remember, the Joes are former newspaper guys with journalism degrees.
Their professors would be proud.
October 7th, 2020 at 3:54 pm
I’ve noticed Davis following his guy all over the field, not just outside but in the slot as well. As far as Keenan Allen, I don’t recall Allen being the one of the guys beating his man for a touchdown.
October 7th, 2020 at 5:02 pm
As I recall, the haters here wanted to give up on Davis. Shows what they know.
If that statement bugs you, you were probably one of the haters.
October 7th, 2020 at 5:04 pm
On the topic of penalties…
We’ve clearly had fewer called on us this year. Another advantage of the Brady Effect.
October 8th, 2020 at 11:05 am
He’ll be fine!! And he did do a good job against the chargers! He only allowed I think it was 60 yards and got the pick to seal the game…. What more you want??
