Bruce Arians: “I Wouldn’t Say We’re Jogging, I Think We’re Still Crawling”

September 29th, 2020

The 2020 edition of the Bucco Bruce Arians offense has a long way to go and the head coach told Dangerous Dan Lucas all about it.

Bucs fans can see things aren’t quite what they used to be, with Mike Evans averaging just 36 yards receiving through three games, and the offense ranking 25th in total yards.

During his weekly chat with WFLA sports chief Lucas, Arians said yesterday that the offense is coming along slowly and is far from where it will be.

“I wouldn’t say we’re jogging; I think we’re still crawling, because we’re still leaving plays out there,” Arians said. “But we see them and I think we’ll start making more and more of them.

Arians cited repetitions as being the key, and he dove into production against the bungling Broncos.

“I thought Tom [Brady] played really, really well. They were going to double cover Mike and then Chris [Godwin] some, but Mike the whole ballgame.  You know, just finding his tight ends, finding his backs, moving the chains,” Arians said. “I thought our running game was solid at times. We didn’t run it a lot in that ball game. But I thought at the end of the ballgame RoJo really ran well. Chris made some great plays. Mike 2-for-2-for-2. That’s a hell of a stat line, two catches, two yards, two touchdowns.  … He finally got single-covered and Tom used him. It was one of those types of days. We left a lot out there still. We’re still growing as an offense.”

The head coach noted that the Broncos played “split safeties” all day while double-covering Evans wherever he lined up. For Arians, that meant a day for his tight ends, and they came through. “If they want to play us that way, [tight ends] got to win inside,” he said.

Joe looks forward to the Bucs’ continued growth on offense against a Chargers defense that couldn’t stop the run or the pass on Sunday against a Panthers weak team without Christian McCaffrey.

Growing little by little. WRs, RBs, TEs and Brady. And fewer TOs!!

Brady, RBs and TEs have to continue to come together and grow. What I would really like to see improvement on this week is to clean up the stupid fouls and see the Oline open up more holes for the running game.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Yeah…….like only kicking a FG against backups the whole second half of the game????

Brucie…..you and Captain weenie armed Tommy Bly better get it together of else you ain’t beating no real teams this season!!!!

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Was wondering why ME13 only got 2 opportunities, but BA answered that perfectly. Apparently that situation is one of the triggers for getting our TEs more involved.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I know I sound like a broken record since Bucco Brucie and Byron Suckwich came here

but I haven’t seen this so called “offensive genius” offense yet.

Todd Bowles has already shown his defensive genius but everyone in Tampa in underwhelmed with lack of offensive production.

Aside from great players making plays………..where’s the creativeness at?????

  5. StatGuy Says:

Chill, the defense looks stellar and fast. Defense would match up vs chiefs better than the rest of the league. Offense will only get better and better and you are in first place and we have a kicker

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Godwin is out, they will definitely double Mike……it will be interesting to see Brady hitting RBs & TEs…..
Look for a heavy dose of Scotty Miller……we could see some Tyler Johnson if Justin Watson is still sidelined.
I’m also looking for a better run game Sunday.

  7. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Bucs would not be 25th in offense with Jameis.

  8. Bird Says:

    Bucs anthem

  9. Captain Stagger Says:

I’ll take less offense and more wins. Less deep 50/50 balls but less int’s.

  10. Youngbucs Says:

😂 Brady stat line better than Winston after 3gms. 👀

  11. Issac haggins Says:

Sparky Buc you are correct but they also wouldn’t hit an easy fade for a TD and the Def is Def starting to be put in less really bad positions !!
Listen , I don’t think Brady looks that good and has left some big plays on the field but they are playing a lil more consistent brand of ball …….. Right now the team is a much better team and the Brady / Winston thing is a wash but the turnover situation may be a big help………. then again if Winston is running this offense his turnovers would probably be less !!

  12. Beeej Says:

Has Cameron Brate even been on the field thus far?

  13. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Why would we waste (put on tape) creative offense against team we can beat with plain vanilla offense? Don’t give the good teams anything to scheme for. I think the coaching staff is right on target with playcalling!

  14. Swampbuc Says:

Mention the Chargers – the Chargers nearly beat the team that smeared the Ravens all over the field last night. What’s the Chargers did against the Panthers is irrelevant. New day, new game. And it’s the Bucs we’re talking about.

  15. Hodad Says:

The only stat that matters is your win, loss record. Right now we sit at the top of the division. We win Sunday, that means we’ve won the first quarter of the season. We’ll be going into October looking like a playoff team. Usually by October we’re out of it looking towards the draft. I’ll take the #25 ranked offense with a winning record over the #5 offense with a losing record the rest of the year, thank you.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have less offense because we haven’t been racking up yardage trying to make up for being behind 2 touchdowns…..

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    anthem

bowles had the luxury of returning all his starters on defense except a safety where we updated…..

BL is working with a rookie RT, new RB, new QB, new TE while also incorporating new plays into the play book….BL is having to teach brady, gronk, and fournette plays, while also teaching the offense some of bradys plays….

    creativity<WINS!!!!!!!…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  18. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Bucs went 5-3 in the last half of the season. They easily could have started this season 3-0 IMO. We can beat bad teams with Brady. Jameis, with a year in the system, would have given us a better chance to beat the good teams, AND a chance to continue that for a decade or more. Brady says he wants to play for another four or five years. That’s great…..but at what level? Old leaders are fine on the sidelines. The Broncos carried Peyton Manning to the SB in his final season. This team is much improved, but not that improved. Y. A. Tittle had a great season, and then he had his last season. Long time fans of the game will remember the photo of him with his head bloodied and bowed. Age is undefeated. I’ve been a fan of this team since troglodytes sloshed around in the swamps of Florida. I will root for them no matter who leads the team. I just believe we compromised our future by letting Jameis go. The defense gets good, and he’s not here to take advantage of it. Not going to harp on this day after day like some have. I just wanted to have my say.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Just a thought, but for those still pining for Jameis, HE’S A NEW ORLEANS SAINT now. Personally I hope he does well in the future, but that ship has sailed. Should-woulda-coulda doesn’t win football games. As they say … ‘Life happens; deal with it’.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    sparky

JW threw most of his INTs the second half of the year….lol….when the defense started to play better…..

bears improved their team around tribisky and what happened?…foles is now the starter…..

jags improved their team around blake and what happened?….minchew is starting now….

keeping JW and signing him to the tag or long term deal wouldve compromised the future….

we’re 2-1 right now and you think JW would give us a better chance to win?…HOW?….lol….so you think JW wouldve beaten the saints week1?…..i doubt it…its more likely he wouldve had a repeat week1 performance from last year when he threw 3INTs…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    screw JW!!!!!!

i dont wish him nothing but Ls as long as he’s in the NFL!!!!!!

luckily, JW will be just like his former fsu qbs that came before him….ponder, manuel and now JW….ALL FSU BUST!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  22. LostinPA Says:

Please stop pushing RoJo. You just can push water uphill. Bring out The F-train and lets stop keeping teams in games.

  23. Killian Says:

Looking at NFL offensive rankings, the Bucs are middle of the pack (14) in points per game (who gives a s*** about yards per game). Considering the defense is a top 5 unit and this offense hasn’t quite gel’d, we are looking pretty solid.

  24. Bucamania Says:

Double covered or not, gotta get ME13 the ball. Every top WR gets doubled.

  25. SlyPirate541 Says:

What’s refreshing is to see an old dog learn new tricks. BA was so openly anti-TE and he’s been taking a lot of heat for it. Instead of stubbornly digging in, he expanded his playbook and introduced some TE plays. Of course, he’s playing like this was always his thing but we all know the difference.

  26. Ericb Says:

1sparkybuc…..dude please i know your def but hurt JW is gone but you cant blame everyone else when ultimatley the QB is executing the plays….week 1 was some bs and we shoukd be 3-0 right now but guess what were 1st place right now and as soon as this offense gels were gonna be dangerous…every game we start out great but second half fall off for some reason..but as soon as it gets clicking for 4 qrts this is a dangerous team…this defense can stop KC and BAltimore…im calling pats vs tompa Bay SB!!! …It would be the ultimate SB and i see it happening
