Report: Leftwich Lobbied For Josh Rosen; Carson Palmer Compared Josh Rosen To Tom Brady

New Bucs practice squad quarterback Josh Rosen will not impact the team this season, barring freakish and horrible happenings.
However, there’s more to the Rosen signing behind the curtain at One Buc Palace.
That’s the word from noted quarterback guru and former NFL QB Jordan Palmer.
The younger brother of Carson Palmer may be the best NFL analyst you’re not listening to, and he was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning talking about how Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was lobbying loudly for Tampa Bay to sign Rosen after the Dolphins cut him. Leftwich was Rosen’s QB coach and OC during his rookie season of 2018 in Arizona.
Also, Jordan Palmer detailed how he and his brother have together studied film of quarterbacks coming out of college every year, an annual family ritual.
Jordan explained that when Carson Palmer studied Rosen film before the 2018 draft, he came away comparing him to Tom Brady in how he is decisive, gets rid of the football quickly and pushes the ball down the field.
It was noted that the elder Palmer did not watch any college football that season, his last in the NFL with Bruce Arians. He strictly was watching film Rosen film without any awareness of news clippings or draft projections.
“[Rosen] was the No. 10 overall pick off talent and potential, not off the momentum of a great senior year,” Jordan Palmer said. “We see a lot of guys off of that and they weren’t really as good as we thought they were. So he is that talented.”
Jordan Palmer said he met Rosen at a quarterback camp when he was 17, and added that the NFL right-now mindset has teams moving on from QBs to quickly, and he said Rosen’s rookie-year offensive line in Arizona was deplorable.
Again, Joe isn’t going to make too much of all this. But it’s awfully intriguing to hear of Leftwich banging the drum to sign Rosen, in addition to Carson Palmer comparing Rosen to Tom Brady after just playing five seasons for Bruce Arians.

Give him a chance. The teams he actually got on the field with were as bad and dysfunctional as you can get. Miami jettisoned all their best players last year insuring a crap finish. Arizona’s head coach got fired after just a couple of games and when Johnson went down, they were horrible. No one was going to do anything in either of these places. He had other offers for back up duties but choose the Bucs practice squad to have a chance to work with our coaches. Not your typical practice squad guy. There ZERO to lose having him there and taking a chance on him but there is a decent upside. Don’t know why anyone is crying about this. He sure has more snaps in a real game than Ryan Griffin.

I was at the joint practices with the Dolphins last year and Rosen was not in any way impressive.

I am trying to figure out why people are mad about the signing. I mean, the guy cost the Glazer family pennies, I believe around $150k. It cost us nothing against the cap. He was acquired for free. If he stinks out and never plays for us, then he’s literally done what most practice squad player do. He becomes a very good backup, then we got a good backup for free. If he becomes a decent starter, we got him for free. If he reaches his full potential, then we got him for free. I can understand not being excited, but to actually be mad made literally zero sense. It’s a 100% great move for everyone involved.

I do believe he can choose to not sign onto an active roster of another team and he can stay on the Bucs practice squad for as long as the Bucs keep him on there this season.

Rosen CHOSE to be on the practice squad and it is up to him if he stays there.
That being said, anyone that wants to see Rosen in action can easily look up Rosen Dropback on YouTube and you can find EVERY SINGLE DROPBACK he had in his first two years in the league. There is a lot to be impressed with… and no, his offensive line and his receivers dropping tons of balls was not impressive. He has a ton of talent and the comparison to Brady was a fair one. Rosen has a lot to work on but he is in year 3 and at a stage that Rivers, Rodgers, and many others had yet to see meaningful action at the same stage of their careers.

@ buc50. You do realize rosen being on the practice squad means he will be in every qb meeting that brady is in? You do realize he will be in all of the offensive meetings correct? You do realize he will be in practice with brady correct? What do you mean how much can he learn? A practice squad player is there just in case there is an injury and a player you develop within your system. That way when he is called up, he will know what he is doing if called upon.
@sarasota and casuals. With the expanded practice squad this year, teams can protect 4 of those players from being picked up each week so may be they protect him each week. Also, i believe a player has the choice of whether or not they want to sign to a team’s active roster. Obviously most players will take the chance of an active roster spot over a practice squad spot. Maybe for rosen he may feel being in tampa is his best move as money is not an issue for him.

And NOBODY knows Rosen as well as Leftwich does. The guy had five offensive coordinators in the his last four years. Leftwich has seen Rosen at his absolute worst and still lobbied hard to get him on the roster. That says a TON!

He was a good pick up for very little risk, in a perfect world we will win a couple of super bowls and Arians will retire and Rosen will be our next QB with Brady as our head coach. Good teams make good big and small decisions at the right time and show themselves years from now.

Its amazing how people keep making the same mistakes on QB evaluations! And these mistakes are being amplified when Qbs are judged on a handful of games on some real bad teams. Players such as Bradshaw, Young, Aikman, and Manning would not have become great players if held to the same standard as Rosen! Poor numbers for first few years on real bad teams. Heck Steve Young after his Buc experience then proceeded to sit for several years just watching and learning from Joe Montana. Rosen now gets to do the same potentially behind Brady! Rosen is not a running QB- never will be. Neither is Brady and he still somehow has managed to win Super Bowls even though young running around QBs is becoming the rage! And just watch but in another year or two, Mahomes will never leave the pocket!

Rosen will succeed…He got 13 games in Arizona and went 3-10 in his first year before being shuttled to Miami. Even Jameis lost his starting job to Fitzmajic before we switched back due to you know what.
P. Manning went 2-14 in his first year…Go figure!
This kid is only 23 with two years of NFL experience…some of us are late bloomers and this kid will shine. The game doesn’t slow down for everyone until we mentally mature and find stability.

Rosen will be on the roster once he knows the playbook. Ryan will be cut. No reason to pay Griffin what he’s making when Rosen has way more NFL starts.

Rosen was really highly rated as a passer coming out. Strong arm, accuracy, anticipation… The knocks seemed to be personality and leadership.
His rookie year was not good, but not catastrophic on a bad team. The new coach wanted Kyler Murray because he fit his style of offense and Rosen did not. This year, the Dolphins wanted to go with Tua. None of this indicates Rosen is a terrible player… Being in an offense that suits his playing style and given a little development time could be all he needs. Or he could be a total bust… but it’s a pretty nice addition to the practice squad. Nothing to lose.

I don’t get the hate and ridicule. No risk. Great upside potential. No real investment at this point if it doesn’t work out. Remind me again what round Tom Brady was chosen in. I feel better today about our quarterback future than I did a week ago. At least the Bucs are addressing the very near future vacancy. Good news all around. Let’s see how it works out.

What Rosen nees more than anything is stability in a learning environment without the pressure to perform on game day.
I suspect his first two years have been hell. Of course he is partially responsible, but that does not mean he is a bust at all.
This is a brilliant, low-risk/massive upside catch, especially if HE wanted to be a Buc.

Both brady and warner got on the field due to injury to the starter and not because their talent was so undeniable. Belicheck is on record as saying if he knew brady was that good, he would have drafted him in the 1st round. Dick vermeil cried when trent green got hurt because he knew he had to start an unproven backup who only had 11 past attempts in the nfl. In the case of warner, he played all over the globe before he landed in the nfl and he was 28 when he started with the greatest show on turf. What they had in common is they were ready and prepared when they got their shot. Its up to rosen to take advantage of his shot by learning from brady and the coaches because he will be around them EVERYDAY, EVERY PRACTICE, EVERY MEETING. So when and if his number is called, he can step in and produce. Btw…..he has more natural talent than warner and brady and that is why he was picked in the 1st round. The bucs were very wise to pick him up.

Man I don’t think we should draft a quarterback because we haven’t developed a quarterback yet in the history of the franchise . This is a good idea to bring in Rosen . Because at least we don’t expect him to be a hall of famer by year 3 . But if we draft a quarterback the fan base is going to expect him to win without a team around him . He will have to be at least a all pro by year 2 or 3 and a hall of famer by year 4 or five . That’s been the problem with the team and fan base . So with Rosen I think he can be a good player for us . But I will say the same thing like I said for Jamies .Rosen will need a running game just like every quarterback in the NFL need . I hope yall understand that by now because even yall goat need a running game and that’s why we brought in 4 runningbacks . And it ain’t nothing worng with giving your quarterback a consistent running game and a good defense so we can win . Go Bucs …

20+ year Cardinals fan here. Not going to lie, when we traded Rosen, I was appalled. We had a horrific team with an even worse coaching staff (not including BL, as he was green at that point). Our OL was digging deep in the bench and literally changed from week-to-week. Zero consistency and zero cohesion, which led to 45 sacks. And what weapons did Rosen have to throw to? Chad Williams? Christian Kirk for a few games before his injury? JJ Nelson? Go back and look at the tape and see how many drops there were. Countless. If it wasn’t for WRs with stone hands, I’m convinced Rosen would easily have been above 3k passing yards, probably 4 less INT, and easily 5 more TDs. I’m not sure you all realize the talent you got for practically nothing. It doesn’t surprise me that BL wanted him with the Bucs. He knows. No doubt, I’m going to be following your team closely this year.
