“Bryan, Joel, next year we’ll fix the defense.”
An intriguing development has emerged in the crafting of the Dream Team, also known as the Buccaneers’ offense.
When versatile stud running back Leonard Fournette was released by the Jaguars on Wednesday, somebody in power at One Buc Palace quickly screamed, “Sign this man! And send RoJo flowers and chocolate!”
So who was doing the loudest screaming? Was it Bucco Bruce Arians, Tom Brady, Jason Licht, or someone else?
If you listened to NFL insider Adam Schefter on ESPN TV, you would have heard him say of the Fournette signing, “There was a real push here from ownership in Tampa to go get this deal done.”
Schefter is extraordinarily credible, so Joe finds his Team Glazer comment extraordinarily intriguing.
Team Glazer likes to talk to media and its team website about as much as Joe enjoys eating steamed parsnips on a hot summer day. So the mysteriousness of Schefter’s comment hits a dead end right there and remains ripe for speculation.
This somewhat reminds Joe of when gossip maven TampaBay.com sportswriter Rick Stroud was outed for his misguided ramblings that Team Glazer was behind the Roberto Aguayo pick. But that feels like a lifetime ago and who knows what happened last week?
Perhaps Team Glazer realized it should be more involved after watching horrific personnel move after horrific non-move that led to the Bucs’ demise over the last 11 seasons. After all, how many other other NFC teams are riding a three-season losing streak? The answers is two; one club is in complete chaos and the other is on its third head coach in three years.
Or maybe a member of Team Glazer was emboldened after being released, along with Joe, from a psychiatric hospital after hearing Bucco Bruce Arians say about Bucs running backs in July, “We won’t make any adjustments to that position.”
Whatever the impetus was to sign Fournette, Joe’s damn glad it happened.
And if this Dream Team move was all part of some sort of Glazer-inspired order, then Joe applauds it and will spend the rest of Sunday wondering if Team Glazer has finally taken over picking kickers.

Unless it’s BA approved it wouldn’t have happened. If he didn’t have head case issues? I could believe the Gzers could have been involved. But because he did. There’s no way the Gzers would have pulled a trigger without approval.

I don’t care if it was aliens that made the team get Fournette (although the speculation is interesting) since the end result is that we now have two proven, good, runners on the team. If Rojo or Vaughn break out this year, it’s all gravy man.

I’m looking forward to having two solid running backs for the next few years (RoJo is the other one.) When was the last time we had that…? The Superbowl era with Alstott and Pittman?

Because, again, this is bigger than just being another super bowl winner. It’s being the first team in the sports history to host the super bowl. The national attention on this area/community, and what it would mean – would be indescribable. The ripple effect will last for decades. Can you imagine a Bucs/Chiefs Super Bowl? Brady vs Mahomes, IN Tampa. Would be the single most anticipated, most watched Super Bowl (maybe sports event) in history. Who gives a f’ing fk about the future when legendary status is right in front you

It was because he threw the ball to the wrong team too many times.
How many INT’s did he throw in the last 3 games of the season?

Team Glazer will be looking to fix the “GM” and the head coach next year!!!!!!!!!! And just like this current regime, it will be from replacement, not development!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The entire team….draft & FAs have been products of BA & Bowles…..and Licht takes his instructions & gets it done….Licht is good at that.

I think Todd Bowles over complicates things with his scheme.
Alot these players seem like they have trouble putting it together, they usually have trouble communicating. Hopefully they’ve gelled and figured it out. I saw a promising Devin White interview, saying just that. I hope it’s true and these guys can just play fast and focused, not looking like they’re lost.

Todd Bowles does run a complicated defense but yet he ranks as one of the brightest DC in the league. He has had tremendous success in the past. He will disguise the defensive plays in greater detail this year. Players are now getting it.
As for last year, we had too young of a defense backfield last year to make it work. This year will be different and the defensive players now don’t have to think so much just react.

Bucs freed up 9.5 mil just prior to the 53 roster cuts. Why – to pick up another player or two. Curious to see who gets cut today and who the Bucs pick up. I am thinking we pick up another safety or linebacker. QB Rosen would be an interesting pickup but rumor has it, he didn’t get along with Byron Leftwich when both were at Arizona.

Off subject, but those worried about the Cap in 2021, the Bucs are in decent shape. They can create $37 million in cap space simply by cutting Smith, Jansen, Brate and Gholston, with no dead money. With Smith, you can re-sign Haeg for much cheaper, and move Wirfs to the left side. Finding a center to replace Jansen shouldn’t be hard. If we keep Gronk, and still have Auclair, Brate is a more of a luxury than a need. Gholston would be the hardest to replace, but if need be, we can go DE in the draft and find his replacement. Restructure JPP and Brady with bonus money, and the Bucks could have asked much as $70m in cap space with bulk of the team still intact for next year. We’ll be fine

Smith is one of the most durable lineman in the league. He took a huge step last year and for a descent left tackle, he is pretty cheap. As for Jensen, according BA he was the best OL on the team last year. No way does Brady want to give both of them up. Gholston is a steal at DE. He is not a pass rusher but one of the best DE for stopping the run. As for Brate, yes I agree. He should be traded as we are deep at this position.

Both JPP and Brady will be on the last year of their 2 year contract, therefore it does not do any good to restructure their contract with bonus money.

The key to managing cap space is helped greatly by drafting players to replace high-salary players…
You could draft a tackle, for example…..move Wirfs to LT….and cut D Smith….
A second round pick could replace a player like Suh…..probably not as good…but serviceable…..or the draft could be vice-versa with the OT in round 2 & the DT in round 1.
But….bringing in a S…..CB…..WR, RB…..doesn’t help the cap.

Licht has made a lot of dumb mistakes, but draft picks or FA, Licht has stacked our team with a dream team. I am starting to see that he has corrected a lot of his mistakes and so far, I am happy with the team’s current roster and our coaching staff.

Durable, Yes, but average at best. Would you rather have Smith, Wirfs and no Godwin, or Wirfs, Haeg and Godwin??? I choose to keep Godwin. Jensen is good, but a center much easier to replace.

He is, but can be replaced by fairly easily, by a decent 1st or 2nd rounder. Honestly, if it comes to him and Suh, I rather keep him.
These moves aren’t about the individual player, but more about the sum of the whole. No way we keep Smith and Jensen, if it means letting a guy like Gronk(depends how he plays) or Godwin walk.

I particularly liked the first four comments here today.
Just want to note that Warrick Dunn decided to go for the maximum money rather than the better odds at a Super Bowl Ring during the 2002 off season. I believe he did this because of his dedication to his program for helping single mothers in obtaining homes of their own in his community. He was already gone when Jon Gruden took charge. Hence it was Mike Alstott and journeyman RB Michael Pittman in our backfield that year.

The biggest mistake they made with Aguayo I believe was that they provided NO COMPETITION for him in training camp during his rookie year. This was the head coaches decision and not the general manager’s. (Perhaps, LIcht should have “forced” Dirk Koetter’s hand. I don’t know.)
All Jason Licht can truly do is draft, trade or sign free agents when trying to supply potential personnel. Someone has to coach them up and bring out their best.

Having 2 great draft classes back to back will surely help with the salary cap.
Another good draft next year and the cap is fine.
Deciding whether to keep these guys depends on their year, which is exactly where BA wants this team to be.
Fournette will be a man looking to get paid as well, which bodes well in a competition with Rojo this year.

Howard doesn’t trust billionaires…period.
But Howard is glad the Glazers have taken a sudden interest in the Bucs.
To be fair…maybe the stars aligned with the Brady signing and then things
took on an inertia of their own.
Howard also think Arians is a great CEO-type head Coach and team Glazer gets credit for that one too.
Howard is still very bitter about the the Bucs as the neglected step-child in the Man U acquisition days.
Also…no sports write should ever be fired or threatened because of criticizing and ownership group. That’s “boss hogg” type intimidation.
