Bucs Chop Roster To 53
September 5th, 2020The initial 53-man roster requirements have been met. Stay tuned because you have no idea who the Bucs may grab from the pile of discarded players around the NFL.
(Joe gets a chuckle out of so many reports that Player-X was told the team wants him on the practice squad. Problem is, there isn’t enough room to bring back every player thrown overboard who is told he’s desired as as practice squad/non-player.)
Two guys cut loose surprised Joe: recently signed center and friend of Pat McAfee, offensive lineman A.Q. Shipley, and safety D’Cota Dixon.
From what Joe saw, Dixon made plays in training camp and he got a lot of work with the first-team defense.
Other than that, the guys cut we already knew about or weren’t surprises at all.
Yeah, Tanner Hudson wasn’t bad but he was trying to be the fifth tight end on a loaded tight end roster. In one of the last practices, he had a very untimely drop of a very catchable ball along the left sidelines and Joe heard Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians snap at him, “Catch the f’ing ball!”
When you are trying to make a roster loaded at your position, even one mistake is too many, especially one that catches the coach’s eye and makes him angry enough to call you out in front of the rest of the team.
Behold the initial 53-man roster (subject to change):

I want to see Cam Gill and Quinton Bell learn as much as they can from Shaq Barrett and JPP, if they actually stick around.
September 5th, 2020 at 6:58 pm
I read somewhere that Hurst will be going on I.R. in the next few days.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:00 pm
Fournette is not on the list yet so that’s a change coming tomorrow
September 5th, 2020 at 7:07 pm
Pat Says: “Fournette is not on the list yet so that’s a change coming tomorrow.”
The Bucs will put a player or two on IR on Sunday to open up a spot – then the Bucs should be able to sign Fournette.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:13 pm
More good news. Clowney is signing with The Titians not the Saints.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:17 pm
TJ will go on IR
September 5th, 2020 at 7:17 pm
We’ll see Ogunbowale back again….
September 5th, 2020 at 7:19 pm
Where is Fournette Joe?
September 5th, 2020 at 7:26 pm
Hurst and Molchon to IR? AQ Shipley back?

Alabama- Re: The 4 PS protected players. My understanding is that those players are only protected from 4pm Tuesday until after game or maybe Sunday night.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:38 pm
Stanglassman Says, “Alabama- Re: The 4 PS protected players. My understanding is that those players are only protected from 4pm Tuesday until after game or maybe Sunday night.”
My understanding is that the 4 designated players are protected even if they are not active on game day. No other team can steal or sign them. They can choose the 4 player each week.
On game day, each team can increase there roster to 55 players from 53 as long as one of the two players is an OL.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:38 pm
Roster 3-4 players away from settled.
Many of those names will be ST guys.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:44 pm
I guess the biggest surprise to me is Jaydon Mickens, since he was cut earlier and brought back. He has returner experience, and after watching his interviews, he’s a very bright young man.
September 5th, 2020 at 7:53 pm
Can someone explain the strategy of cutting DO and then bringing him back after the 53 has been announced
September 5th, 2020 at 7:56 pm
Whew! According to CBS sports, Jadeveon Clowney has agreed to sign a one year deal with The TN Titans. He will not be going to the Saints – thank God!
September 5th, 2020 at 7:56 pm
The Bucs just cleared $9.5 million in cap space by restructuring Mike Evans contract. Who are we going to get?
Earl Thomas or J. Clowney?
Who would be the better fit and fill the greater need?
Earl Thomas is still a good Safety but the thought of Having JPP, Clowney and Barrett on the same D is very exciting…
September 5th, 2020 at 8:04 pm
Garble was Clowney coach at Houston and closed the deal for the Titians.
Would the Bucs pick up Haha Clinton Dix. Surprised to see he got cut by the cowboys today.
September 5th, 2020 at 8:09 pm
where is Fornette?
September 5th, 2020 at 8:10 pm
@ Stanglassman
I would rather sign Earl Thomas than Haha C.D…
We just freed up $9.5 million.
Plus Clowney is still available and I hear he wants a Super Bowl ring…
September 5th, 2020 at 8:29 pm
Our defensive backs are a weakness
September 5th, 2020 at 8:36 pm
Biggest story is another wasted draft pick on a kicker
September 5th, 2020 at 8:41 pm
I wonder if the Bucs restructuring contracts is to sign Godwin to an extension.
September 5th, 2020 at 8:46 pm
@mojo
What about Clowney or Earl Thomas?
September 5th, 2020 at 8:51 pm
What’s the deal with Griffin? Every coaching staff hangs on to the guy yet never show an ounce of confidence in letting him see even 2nd string reps.
The safety Evans is another….he’s been injured since 2018. Time to throw in the towel.
September 5th, 2020 at 8:56 pm
We get all this talent this year, and somebody is worried about a wasted 5th Round pick! I know EVERY other NFL team hits on ALL of their draft picks. 🙄
September 5th, 2020 at 8:59 pm
Clean House: Okay, I’ll take the bait…Who sucks in the secondary, and why did it cost JW his job?
September 5th, 2020 at 8:59 pm
@ Joe in mich
I agree. Let’s not cry over spilt milk. However – I don’t want Licht drafting any more kickers unless it is a seventh round pick.
September 5th, 2020 at 9:02 pm
I can’t believe it is almost here. A week from right now I will be getting with my boys finalizing who is bringing what. Waking up early finalizing all my fantasy teams. Watching nfl network. And they will actually be talking. About the Bucs showing tom Brady and company showing up to the stadium. Then tune in to fox pre game. And there will probably 10 minutes of dedicated time to the bucs and there off-season acquisitions. Then see what happens on game day with all the improvements to our team. Finally get to see a qbs who doesn’t turn the ball over work with this talent. Just please let me be a happy man at 8:00 pm next Sunday.
September 5th, 2020 at 9:11 pm
@ Bobby M
Josh Rosen should be our #3. Griffen is a #3 QB. Not a #2…
Definitely not a #1.
September 5th, 2020 at 10:22 pm
Marinebuc
All due respect, but Rosen is moving toward a third team in three years and wasn’t impressive enough to stick with AZ or Miami.
Occam’s Razor right? 20 games. 12 TD. 19 Int.
What am I missing?
September 5th, 2020 at 10:40 pm
The Patriots cut their 5th round kicker too Jason is always copies the Pats.
September 5th, 2020 at 11:36 pm
JMark…both Dolphins and Arizona were obsessed with their guy (Tua, Kyler), so they have Josh a chance to move on. He hasn’t done well, but he’s been on two awful teams, it’s not like he busted being the unadulterated starter for 2-3 years.
September 6th, 2020 at 4:34 am
maybe scoop up ha ha clinton dixxx…
and get rid of the new guy motley…
toss him on taxi…
just a thought
September 6th, 2020 at 4:52 am
i’m surprised with the back end linebacker spots…
i though we were basically keeping the guys who got cut…divinity, daniels and russell..
while cutting the 2 guys we kept…gill and the other guy…
wtf is going on…lol
September 6th, 2020 at 6:47 am
Joe in Michigan,
I’m not saying they suck, I just don’t think they’re strong. I don’t think they know how to really play as a tough unit yet. They’re still figuring it out and a bit of strong veteran leadership would go a long way. Every other unit seems to have that at this point. Maybe they will surprise, I think Earl Thomas would be great- part of the legion of Boom- he knows what it’s supposed to look like.
We need these guys to be stout not making boneheaded clueless mistakes
Winston caused many of his own problems, but he wasn’t all of the problems.
Secondary needs to take a few steps up or the super bowl is just a Dream
September 6th, 2020 at 6:48 am
Who’s gonna tell me I’m wrong on this take?
September 6th, 2020 at 7:51 am
brady must really see something in hurst…
his next chris hogan or something…(next season)
who knows
September 6th, 2020 at 7:53 am
Clean House Says: “I’m not saying they suck, I just don’t think they’re strong.”
PFF ranks the Bucs defense at no. 9 last year and thinks they may be the best defense this year. Offensive in my opinion is top 3.
Clean House Says: “Secondary needs to take a few steps up or the super bowl is just a Dream”
Not disagreeing with you here but when Dean started on the outside his coverage grade was 89.8. He was top 5 of all CB with 17 pass deflections. Another top 5 CB for pass deflection was Calton Davis with 19 pass deflection. He ranks No.2. Murphy-Bunting tied Juan Thornhill for all rookies in interception with 3. Our weak spot was Safety but Jordon Whitehead did a pretty good job with run support. Antoine winfield had a great camp and will shore up the other safety spot. Edwards was great in pass coverage last year but missed too many tackles. Supposedly Edwards has worked to correct his tackling this offseason.
Defense will be Top 5 this year. Only the Bucs, Ravens, San Fran and Saints have top 10 offenses and defenses this year. Chief won it all last year with the best offense in the NFL but only had an average defense. The Bucs offense may be just as good this year but they will boast a better defense. I predict, we will make it to the Superbowl in our own stadium.
September 6th, 2020 at 8:06 am
Ok Alabama, I hope you’re right.
I think all of these guy flash talent. I am most impressed with Dean’s upside followd by Whiteheads toughness and motor. I still think a good experienced vet would go a long way, but apparently it’s rocket science for these to pick up this defense, especially short notice, so it might be better to just roll with it at this point.
September 6th, 2020 at 8:55 am
@ Jmarkbuc
I understand what you are saying but I’m not recommending that Rosen be our starter or even our #2. He needs a lot of work no doubt but he is probably good enough to replace Griffen as our #3 QB right now…
September 6th, 2020 at 8:58 am
@ Adam
Haha Clinton-Dix is a safety. Motley is a CB…
I think we might be signing safety Earl Thomas. We just cleared $9 million after restructuring Evans contract.
September 6th, 2020 at 9:41 am
The secondary could use some vetran help. That is the only perceived weakness, I say perceived because maybe the last 6 games of 2019 will continue and maybe it will not. I would bring in Earl Thomas immediatley. We will see what the Bucs do. They are all in and it would be instant upgrade. No time to go turtle now, Super Bowl or bust lol. It is a blast for Buc fans, for the first time in 17 years GO BUCS!!!
September 6th, 2020 at 9:50 am
Earl Thomas comes off as an AB lite-type to me.
Marine and Chris…. there has to be something ( or lack of something) to a early first round pick who makes zero impact on bad teams…. most all first round QB’s go to bad teams …. draft order and all..,
September 6th, 2020 at 10:02 am
Clean House: We’ll have to wait and see. I think they’re gonna be good, but won’t know for sure until they do it, or don’t do it. I like the Bucs top 3 CB’s, I wish Carlton Davis made more plays on the ball, as in interceptions. I think Antoine Winfield Jr will be very good. Right away? Not sure. He’s a rookie, but smart. The other S spot of Edwards, Whitehead, or Adams is adequate.
