Matt Gay Booted
September 4th, 2020To the surprise of only a few, the Bucs released 2019 fifth-round pick kicker Matt Gay.
In a effort to whittle the roster down to the mandatory 53-man limit, the Bucs decided to be straight with Gay and gave him his walking papers.
Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians has groused about kickers often in training camp and when the Bucs signed veteran kicker Ryan Succop, the handwriting was on the wall.
Succop will now be the Bucs’ fifth opening day kicker in as many years.

Lol straight with gay
September 4th, 2020 at 9:19 am
I see what you did there Joe👍
September 4th, 2020 at 9:19 am
Sorry kid but I won’t miss you… Cost us 2-3 games last year.
I knew it was a bad pick after hearing Matt takes anti-anxiety meds… Not something you want to hear about an NFL kicker.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:19 am
Nice kid, but this team is definitely not screwing around this year.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:19 am
My god. I hope alicht has Finally learned his lesson on drafting kickers!! Fournette signing takes the highlight of another wasted kicker draft pick!! Sad day for NDog considering he was bout to get a Gay jersey! Would fit NDog perfectly!!
September 4th, 2020 at 9:20 am
Good luck young man. You seem like you did your best. At least you made some good money being on the team a while.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:20 am
Licht has been a descent GM – would be great if the Bucs would ban him from drafting a kicker. Until BA came on board, Licht also sucked at drafting in the second round but the last two years has been pretty good.
Bucs may still be looking for another kicker once the final 53 man cuts are made this weekend.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:21 am
Another FAILED pick by Backstabbin’ Jason Licht. Drafting kickers in this era is an idiotic move and he’s done it twice during his Reign of Terror. The same time span that saw the Eagles, 49ers, and Rams go from worst in their division to the Super Bowl.
Here’s to hoping the Bucs win it all this year because Jason Licht has proven time and time again he is incapable of building a roster through the draft.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:22 am
“straight with Gay”….good stuff Joe
September 4th, 2020 at 9:22 am
Derrick … “
Sharp stick in the eye”
September 4th, 2020 at 9:22 am
I believe Gay will be a good NFL kicker but this isn’t a season for patience.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:25 am
I agree that “Licht has been a descent GM”, but his record shows that he has not been a decent GM.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:27 am
This was the right move and the kicking position is one you just don’t “develop”…..
Succup is a proven Pro…..he will miss some like everyone else….but I believe he can be trusted.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:30 am
Sometimes Joe can’t pass up the fastball down the middle. 🤷♂️🙂
September 4th, 2020 at 9:32 am
Getting rid of the old major contributors to last years losses that needed upgrades. This was the last domino to fall. Maybe this will comfort those lovers of certain players that were major contributors to last years fiasco. The message…if you can be upgraded, you will be. No one is exempt, regardless of what beloved college team you played for or where you are from.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:36 am
Good move- just watching the twos interviews on the team site showed the doubt in Gay and the calm professionalism of the new guy
September 4th, 2020 at 9:38 am
Sure would have been nice to give JW a stable of actual NFL RBs and a potentially competent veteran kicker-
September 4th, 2020 at 9:38 am
D-Rome…yes, Licht has has his share of misses at every level of the draft, though in the early years, he didn’t have the power to choose in some of those misses. Lovie was in control. But he does deserve some credit as well. Just looking at a couple examples, we have Vea, Howard, Winfield and Fournette on the roster. But we could have had often injured James and Cook, who is in the middle of a contract mess in Minnesota. And currently have a team with as much talent as anyone. So he does deserve his share of credit, as well.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:38 am
Team needs veteran secondary help- hope it’s coming
September 4th, 2020 at 9:47 am
Good news – Gay is done. Right decision.
Bad news -Another kicker probably gets drafted in 2021 lol
September 4th, 2020 at 9:48 am
Clean House Winston was 1 of the guys who had to go also. What part don’t you understand about that. BA is building his roster how he sees fit again I will repeat he did not draft winston. Some of y’all so blinded be realistic the Bucs are not messing around. Anybody can get their walking papers.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:50 am
mark2001, you can give credit to any failed GM for certain hits. Even Mark Dominick had his share of hits but overall he was horrible just like Jason Licht has been horrible. No one blames Raheem Morris and Greg Schiano for Dom’s bad picks. The buck has to stop with someone and Licht has been the one constant since January 2014.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:53 am
Well that didn’t take long lol. Wonder if they try to stash him on the practice squad…
September 4th, 2020 at 9:59 am
This guy gave me ulcers during games last year. This a relief!
September 4th, 2020 at 10:00 am
Well. Since we are consistently tough on others around here for being wrong. I’ll man up and say I was WRONG. I thought he’d work it out. There’s no room on this team right now if you aren’t 100% trusted and ready.
I wish you good luck Mr Gay.
See Lost Dog and CLouse, it’s not so hard. Notice how I didn’t stomp my feet for months and months, turn into a troll and berate others about how the Glazers, Licht and our HC didn’t hire an air flow specialist to fix the South Endzone? Because clearly they don’t care about Gay or winning. They just ruined this franchise FOREVER! Wa wa wa….
In BA I Trust!
September 4th, 2020 at 10:01 am
If the Bears dont sign him it will be so Gay on the practice squad.
September 4th, 2020 at 10:07 am
I won’t be surprised if he ends up on the PS.
Succop is coming off kicking leg surgery so how he responds in a small question mark.
Gay has a cannon for a leg. One hopes he can get straightened out. I recall numerous articles on JBF of praise of his leg.
Fact: if the ball doesn’t go straight, you won’t be on any roster.
Let’s hope Succop has a great season.
September 4th, 2020 at 10:16 am
Wait, what?
You mean players are being held accountable for their actions or lack of?
1. JW-gone
2. Barbor-gone
3. Gay-gone
See ladies and gents, BA isn’t such a bad man.
ITS A GREAT DAY TO BE A BUCS FAN!!!
September 4th, 2020 at 10:25 am
Hargreaves gone also!!!
September 4th, 2020 at 10:35 am
D Rome… Lovie was given the keys to the organization. For Licht to get his job, he needed Smiths sign off. Smith could have canned him any time. Not saying he hasn’t had his share of bad picks. But Licht couldn’t have picked anyone during those years without Lovie’s approval. Or gotten rid of any players without Lovie’s approval. Dom had a different situation with Rah and Schiano. Really no comparison from a power structure between those years and Smiths. And Licht does deserve some credit for this current roster, though actually, the power Smith had and Arians has are probably pretty comparable. They called the shots.

“From this post written by JBF
Kobe knows who they will vote for on Nov 3rd”
KOBE Faker
September 4th, 2020 at 11:02 am
Great now Licht will have an excuse to draft a kicker next year. he should have been cut after being responsible for two losses last year himself.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:02 am
licht is a horrible gm and the trash record shows it; lucky that BA is saving his arse
September 4th, 2020 at 11:12 am
LOL decided to be straight with Gay LOL
September 4th, 2020 at 11:20 am
Good move. Never trusted Gay
September 4th, 2020 at 11:23 am
He’s the reason we got Brady guys. Much love Matt.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:26 am
Straight with Gay. Good one Joe. Well let’s be positive about gay. If he made field goals against 2 of the following 3: Seattle, Atlanta and the Giants last season its likely we’d still be dealing with Jameis as the Bucs could have kept him with a 9 or 10 win season and Brady would probably be playing for the Chargers…..
Lets just hope Succop does not catch the kicking curse! Simple rule: never draft a kicker or punter even with a compensatory 7th rounder Mr Licht. Big Dust has a good argument about your ineptitude on kickers and the whole 2016 draft!

If you didn’t laugh at that line Joe wrote…you’re not human.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:35 am
now Gay can go play with ndog and realist at smittys house…
GO BUCS!!!!
September 4th, 2020 at 12:14 pm
But I thought Matt Gay was surprised to be good even after he left 9 points on the board in the Falcons game and after the Giants game? At least that’s what the anti Jameis crowd told me.
Gotta give credit to the Bucs for appearing to fix the many holes that were on the team last year.
Kicker, Pass Defense, RB were all liabilities for the Bucs last year. But yet it was all Jameis fault?
September 4th, 2020 at 12:17 pm
Bring back Aguayo !!!!

ooof with the ‘straight with gay’ joke lol
September 4th, 2020 at 1:22 pm
I went to high school with Succup. He was a laid back guy and everyone knew he would be in the NFL one day. I’ve watched him kick fg’s from midfield with ease as a 16 year old. He doesn’t have that leg anymore but he gives us a consistent kicker, hopefully, and the ability to win games late if called upon. So happy for him!
September 4th, 2020 at 1:32 pm
Good riddance
September 4th, 2020 at 2:01 pm
I’m so happy. I’ve been saying the guy was a head case for a year. Great leg but nothing between the ears. Time to move on.
September 4th, 2020 at 3:11 pm
What the heck!!! I just bought my wife a pink gay Jersey. This suscks.
September 4th, 2020 at 5:06 pm
Anybody who wants to watch what a clutch kicker Succup is go back and watch the Titian’s vs KC playoff game in 2018. I believe he had 5 fgs and the game winner from 53 on a frozen field. If he is 80% the kicker he was prior to the knee surgery he will be a major upgrade. Don’t get me wrong I don’t expect the knee to be an issue at all going forward. As for Gay he did all the right things after last season shortening his steps on place kicks and simplifying his mechanics. But it’s going to take awhile to get adjusted. I believe if given the opportunity he may become a weapon for some team in the future. Wish him the best.
September 4th, 2020 at 7:14 pm
Another kicker gets the boot. I guess Succop was performing well in practices. Another pick wasted on a kicker that could’ve been used to fill a backup role. Smh
September 4th, 2020 at 7:22 pm
A year to late, cost us games and players! I’m glad he got the ax, see you later Bum!!!!!
September 4th, 2020 at 8:43 pm
gay got goosed…
he just couldn’t kick a straight ball
September 4th, 2020 at 9:33 pm
How many kickers has this staff evaluated now? Sure this guy was good. He was on the street just like the rest they signed and failed. He is a Buc kicker now so I don’t expect he will end the search.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:09 pm
The article on espn written by Jenna, whom I like and think is a great writer, mentions the notorious SOUTH END ZONE when talking about Gay’s misses last year. Enough with the south end zone already. this isnt the meadowlands, its Tampa! Indoor kickers have no problem. Its not the south end zone, its the kickers, stop drafting them!
September 5th, 2020 at 2:03 am
He was waived, right? I hope the put him on the practice squad.
September 5th, 2020 at 9:42 am
If San Francisco needs a kicker…….
Gay all the way.
September 5th, 2020 at 10:07 pm
The NFL is still not ready for a Gay kicker, I guess.
