When the Bucs addressed their weakest (by far) position on the team last week and signed free agent running back Leonard Fournette, it sent former NFL suit Mike Tannebaum over the top.
The Bucs have been quite open about how they are gunning to be the first team in NFL history to play in a Super Bowl held in its home stadium. And Tannebaum, who used to run the Jets and the Dolphins, believes the Fournette signing by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht may have done it.
Tannebaum took to the BSPN airwaves last week on “Stay in Bed” to rave about the Bucs roster.
“There is an axiom in football: ‘Pass to score and run to win,'” Tannebaum said. “They can do both. … This is a team that can do it all with an underrated defense.
“I see this team getting to the NFC championship game at a minimum.”
Of course, if that happens, it will be largely because of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady. And Tannebaum said if Brady can pull this off with virtually no offseason, it will lift him into a stratosphere of superstar athletes that few if any have reached.
Said Tannebaum of Brady, “He goes into a status where, I don’t know, maybe Michael Jordan is in that conversation?”
Joe knows some NFL analysts, NFL Network It-Girl Kay Adams for example, believe Brady coming to the Bucs wreaks of Jordan to the Wizards in the NBA.
If Brady can get the Bucs to the Super Bowl, well, that’s not exactly Wizards-like.

Are we going to sign Safety Earl Thomas?

I agree the D is underrated. I’d agree need some help at S, though it may be late to address. May be worth a shot though.
I see the Bucs are now power ranked at #5 at Yahoo Sports. The last one I saw from NFL.com had them at like #13, which I think is ridiculous. They are still ranked worse than the Saints, with that very scary game of course coming up first.

Marine…you’re thinking of Mike Edwards. I’m almost positive they’re starting Whitehead over him, so you’d have the rookie safety with the NFL vet father who picks off passes, and the guy who doesn’t pick off passes but does tackle.

Whitehead is a great tackler. Antoine Winfield will be starting over Edwards. For a normal 2 set package, it will be whitehead and Winfield. In an obvious passing 2 set, it will be Winfield and Edwards.

I would still want to bring in Earl Thomas as long as he isn’t too cancerous or a total head case. We need strong veteran leadership in the DB room and ET has been a very good Safety in the league for a decade.

Bucs are pretty content with Antoine Winfield and Whitehead – I might be wrong but I seriously doubt they will pick up Earl Thomas unless he signs at a discount.

Safety Justin Evans is will be placed on IR this afternoon. He takes up 1.6 million of the cap space this year. This will open up another spot for the 53 roster. Additionally Molchon and Tyler Jonshon will placed on IR – another 2 spots. Fournette will take one of the spots. If I were to guess, the Bucs may fill one of these spots with another team’s Safety or LB.

Josh Rosen has already shown once he couldn’t play under B. Leftwich. They gave up on him in just one year, and then Miami didn’t even want him on the roster either. Definitely don’t think he needs to be coming here. I’ll take Griffin, who knows the offense but is an uknown quantity in games for the most part, over a guy who is proven a bust who doesn’t know the offense.

By their tracking, Thomas was thrown at 14 times in 547 coverage snaps. That equates to 2.5 of every 100 passes going Thomas’ way. Pro Football Reference kept a different book on Thomas, showing 11 completions allowed on 25 targets for 113 yards and two interceptions.
That amounts to a 24.2 QB rating. That was the lowest figure in the NFL in 2019. Throwing the ball in the dirt is a 39.3 QB rating. In those 25 passes thrown at Thomas, he had two interceptions and four pass deflections. Six plays on the ball in 25 passes, nearly one every four times the ball way thrown his way.
PFR has Thomas’ 42% completion rate in coverage as the second-lowest in the NFL, and he also didn’t allow a touchdown in his coverage in 2019.

Sounds like an upgrade to me. Obviously signing Earl Thomas will come with its share of risk but the potential reward is much greater IMO.

Greg Auman had an interesting list of starting players last year and what the Bucs have now. Huge contrast for the better. Here is a few with a few changes:

I know we have gotten used to signing big names and ET would be great, but I think it’s time to pay David or Godwin with that money.
Let’s not forget about taking care of the mainstays on this team who have never even sniffed the playoffs.
Does anybody really think Keenan Allen is better than Godwin?
Would the Bucs pay Godwin $4 Million more a year than ME?
Crazy money being thrown around out there a year before the salary cap diminishes significantly.

That Wizards team had nobody but Jordan. There was no thought of another championship when pulled a Jimmy Stewart and went to Washington.
