“All Of My Offensive Game Has Been Overlooked Since I’ve Been In The League”
August 29th, 2020Jaydon Mickens is on the wrong football team as a guy looking for a meaningful wide receiver job, but he’s certainly in the right place to win a returner gig and be a cover man on special teams.
Joe suspects Mickens will be on the 53-man roster on opening day and, perhaps, be the first Buccaneer to touch the ball during what should be a special season (especially for a team coming off The Lost Decade.)
Mickens was a fun interview this week, in part because he has that big-talking swagger that’s rare among the current crop of Tampa Bay receivers.
“All of my offensive game has been overlooked since I’ve been in the league,” Mickens offered.
Undrafted out of the University of Washington, 26-year-old Mickens was the Jaguars’ punt returner in 2017, the season they lost a heartbreaker to the Patriots in the AFC title game. Mickens took a punt to the house that year (what’s that, Bucs fans?) and he had an excellent average of 10.6 yards per return, fifth best in the NFL.
But Mickens’ production fell off a year later and he was on the street most of the 2019 season before the Bucs signed him in December.
With running back/returner T.J. Logan suffering a major injury and no other seasoned punt returner on the roster, Mickens looks like he’s primed for the job. Bucco Bruce Arians praised Mickens’ speed this week and said he’s battling for a No. 5 or No. 6 receiver role.
Joe’s glad the Bucs have the option to go with Mickens. At least he’s been there.
Fun trivia: what Buccaneer returned the most punts last season? Answer: Bobo Wilson, who currently has no NFL job.

Wow and bobo was cut after week 6. Does his fielding of punts count the ones he muffed one like the game I was at in England? Sarcasm but wow that was a disaster

I never hear Calais name in the returner conversation. Has he bombed out already? I thought he had a good chance on those teams.

Really odd, but I don’t remember the Jags going to the playoffs at all within recent history. Yah, the Bucs may be able to use Mickens. Good info, Joe.

Roy,
Oh yeah, I remember that. The Jags were the greatest thing since sliced bread in 2017….. according to several experts on here.
I think NOSBOS even jumped ship for them.
But alas, they were a one year wonder and went directly back to their losing ways.

Anyone notice how we are somehow getting deeper at Every position?
Must be because Realist is in charge I guess

……………..
Quite honestly I have been talking to NOSBOS for about 6 years now. Even had drinks with him in Orlando a few vacations ago.
He got so upset with the Bucs’ he actually changed his voicemail intro from “Noles and Bucs’
to “Noles and Jags”!
He has gotten married and had a few kids though in the last few years tho. That does change people.

I don’t like the attitude of “I’ve been overlooked“
It should be “I have to work my ass off to prove I belong because so far it hasn’t been good enough!”

Good point David!

Totally boring topic so I’ll switch it up.
We still don’t have depth at DE. Hopefully we pick some guys up after cuts. The Bucs are the perfect destination for players that want to get noticed.
