Big Play, Bigger Hit (Video)

So Kevin Minter was beaten by Rob Gronkowski today for a big play down the right sideline at Bucs practice.
Minter let up (as he’s supposed to) after the catch, but the play didn’t end there.
In the Buccaneers.com “Play Of The Day” video below, you’ll see second-year safety Mike Edwards fly over after Gronk takes five steps with the football and drill him in the left shoulder. Gronk was ready for the hit but still went flying out of bounds after the impact.
Fun stuff.
However, Joe wonders what kind of talking to Edwards got behind the scenes, considering the NFL Network news today that Gronk is on a body-preservation plan in training camp.
Regardless, Joe has had great fun watching this several times. Nice pass blocking by Dare Ogunbowale and a great throw by Tom Brady.

I saw the hit and I didn’t like it at all. Not only is Gronk on a body-preservation plan but he’s has a multitude of concussions throughout his career. What did that hit accomplish on Gronk in that instance? The mouth-breathers out there will be like, “Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, that’s REAL football” until he has to go into concussion protocol.
Just because the pads go on it doesn’t mean you have to go full retard out there.

No, that’s called a hit. A tackle is when you wrap up with the arms and bring the player to the ground.

i doubt BA is allowing “FULL LIVE” practice right now where players,” wrap up with the arms and bring the player to the ground.”
it was a nice little shoulder tap lol….ive seen gronk bounce off “hits” like that in the game before….

BA is an old school coach….im sure he yelled out,” stay up” since both players hit the ground….
if BA aint scared to cuss brady out, he aint scared of a little contact for gronk..

I agree with not knocking the snot out of Gronk all the time, but BA called it to be a love play because the RB’s were showing exceptional pass protection, so live hitting and tackling were okay. Gronk has to take SOME punishment in camp, albeit regulated. I like the hit regardless. If Edward’s can pop a guy that hard that’s 60+ pounds larger than him, that also makes happy.

I don’t think the hit was that bad. Unless you are Dartmouth most teams get used to contact before games anyway.

That’s what my college coaches you to call “thud” hit with the shoulders no wrapping up no taking the player to the ground. Now if they fall after a good shoulder thud that’s on the person with the ball in their hand.

Edwards knocked Gronk out of bounds to the ground 4 – 5 steps after beating the defender. You can see it was a right sideline route after Gronk caught it and ran. Stupid ass play for a young buck trying to make a name for himself. I’m sure more than one coach/player called him on it. He keeps that up he gonna get trucked or blind-side blocked on a pass play. Gronk went after a player who hit him out of bounds.

This is practice and no big deal… Gronk’s hands are ridiculous! I know he has at some time dropped a pass but I have never seen it. There are so many superior aspects of his game but to me his soft hands and ability to grab everything stand out to me.

Defense has to get better too. The need real practice to do it.
If Gronk gets hurt in practice, then he’d get hurt in games too.

…and yes, I’m one of those mouth breathers that like to see hits in football. I also have really bad allergies right now, so the mouth is the only way for me to get oxygen.
Gronk is a big boy, the next time he’ll dish out the pain. Will you all be crying for Mike Edwards when he gets trucked? Gronk isn’t some frail old man, he can take care of himself.

I doubt Gronk was expecting the hit as in most sessions it is basically glorified two hand touch.

He’s gonna have to get used to getting hit again sooner or later.
No preseason means it needs to happen in practice. You gotta remember how to brush that ish off before you’re in a live game that actually counts.
