Bruce Arians Talks Tristan Wirfs

The Bucs’ first-round rookie tackle, Tristan Wirfs.
Right tackle is not a concern of Bucco Bruce Arians, he explained after practice today.
Joe asked the head coach about first-round pick Tristan Wirfs after a few days at right tackle facing defense.
“Doing good. Doing fine for a rookie,” Arians replied. “He’s got his hands full with [top players] against the run and the pass.”
Later in his news conference, Arians went on to sa he hates the word chemistry but loves the word communication. The O-line is communicating very well, Arians noted, and that includes all the guys stepping up to help Wirfs with his learning curve.
“That’s not a worry of mine at all,” Arians said of the offensive line. (That line will help Joe sleep a bit tonight.)
Arians also rejected a reporter’s premise that the defense got the best of the offense this morning.

Wirfs will have his bad moments this year, no doubt, but the good will far out weigh the bad. Kids a beast, and he has a really good D line to get him ready. My bet is he kicks some butt himself the next 3 weeks.

I think it’s being shortsighted to believe that Wirf’s can’t step in out of the gate as the starting RT. The easiest position between the two tackles, and especially that Donovan Smith stepped in right away at LT. Because in my opinion I think Wirfs will be a better tackle than Smith, and possibly usurp him at LT in the future unless Smith has some kind of epiphany.

If Whirfs doesn’t start this year, I consider the pick to be wasted. The Bucs literally have a 1 year window to win a superbowl, possibly 2 years. Yeah you can argue that the bucs needed depth at Oline but they also need some on the Dline, LB and DB . Call me foolish but if I knew I only had 1 year to go for gold, I would have players on my team that are ready to contribute day 1.

It is one thing for a Rookie to get “thrown into the fire” and be asked to start day one.
Without enough practice, pre-season, and padded experience he is being thrown into a Volcanoe. Yeah he will stumble at times but I am SURE that this is a 10 starter!

anyone the size of wirfs, that can stand in waist deep water in the pool and jump out without any use of hands to the pool ledge has my vote of confidence, and a person i am not to damn worried about

Not worried here either, and any #1 pick spent on an elite lineman is a great investment, in my opinion. They don’t grow on the trees in your backyard.

Offensive line for rookie is tough for first year rookies but Wirfs has phenomenal physical skills, comes from a good coaching school and is a smart kid with a good attitude. He will struggle but will be fine.

There is no doubt in my mind he will start. I think there is a good chance he goes out there week one and starts. He will probably struggle but it’s asking a lot for any rookie offensive lineman no matter how good he may be coming in to go start week one with no minicamp, rookie camp or pre season games in the NFL.

Hey “yeah”…there’s a salary cap, and picking a guy from the school that builds the most pro-ready linemen on a rookie salary was just what we had to do.

it’s gonna be a bit like Vea’s rookie year. There will be alot of inconsistency but there will be alot of “wow” moments on tape where he just dominates a snap against another giant human being

If Gronk can teach our other two TE’s to block like him and we have a lot of “12” formations shouldn’t they be able to help Wirfs with some solid chips?
