Training Camp Illusions
August 18th, 2020Joe loves a good training camp illusion.
In the Monday play below, the touted “Play Of The Day” by the Bucs, you will see Ronald Jones look crisp and aggressive. But you’ll also see returning starting safety Andrew Adams let up on the play (as he’s supposed to) and not stick RoJo in the hole after he was too quick for Cameron Brate.
For Joe, this represents some of the fun of camp analysis, sorting through what’s real and what isn’t.

lets just be positive that Rojo looks decisive fast and aggressive. we have no idea how any of these kind of plays would really play out if they were real. For instance you mention Adams lets up, well Brate would have probably pancaked Adams if this were real. Brate is for sure putting 50% power into that block

ROJO looks great, and has added even more muscle!

Good pickup. You are correct Brate was clearly beaten but I’m not sure ROJO doesn’t break the tackle…it was from a perpendicular angle instead of head on.
IMHO that is precisely the moment of truth in a football game. One of these guys is going to make a play. Would it have been Andrews or ROJO?
We’ll never know…at least until the season starts because as you point out the hitting is limited. This always scares me. Sometimes it’s actually safer to simply have everybody running around blasting each other…not head hunting..but clean hard tackling. Sometimes trying to figure when to let go and when to blast messes with guys heads and a half effort can frequently lead to injury.
How much hitting should go on in camps if there was no sickness?

I saw Adams pull up but wasn’t RoJo already about 8-10 yards down field. Man..he looked fast and angry!

No one really knows for sure but one thing is clear. That would probably be called a penalty on Brate for holding or block in the back. Either way the play would be called back and another RoJo explosion play cancelled.

Looks like Adams blew that play up (if it was full go)!
