Winfield Might Start
August 17th, 2020In a normal year, you would figure first- and second-round draft picks would have a great chance of starting. If not, something is wrong.
Well, this is not a normal year. There have been no OTAs, no minicamps and no preseason games. In most years, on a day when there may already have been been two preseason games played, the Bucs had their first padded practice this morning.
And while it may be way too early to call, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians would not discount the possibility that second-round draft pick, safety Antoine Winfield, may start come the season opener against the slimy Saints.
In recent press conferences, Arians seemed to try and quash chatter about first-round pick Tristan Wirfs or Winfield starting right off the bat. Today, Arians broke from that pattern when asked for early impressions of Winfield.
“Very, very intelligent player,” Arians said. “[An NFL atmosphere] not too big for him. He will be competing for a starting job quickly.”
Well, it’s great to hear Winfield has made such an impression so quickly.
Joe has said it before and will write it again, this Winfield, from his YouTube highlights package, looks like a damn baller. Joe’s excited to think of how much a guy like Winfield could help the secondary.

I pretty much take anything BA says with a grain of salt this time of year. Any HC/GM really. Bogus laughers like “Jameis is doing fine.” “Jameis is improving.” And he was not worried in preseason last year when Winston played some horrid games and was picked off left and right…kind of like what ended up happening during the season. And the idea BA didn’t discount that he’d start doesn’t mean a thing. It’s preseason/camp, and I’m thrilled they’re having it.

Joe is right about his highlights. I’m no expert but he is as quick to the ball as anyone I’ve seen. Great reaction time – and streaks like a rocket once he sees the play.

Whats funny about GMC being out for the season?

Winfield will be fine I’m sure his dad did a great job in preparing him during this pandemic

Too bad for McCoy…the earlier McCoy, that is. I liked him, but he never got to the top rung of leading/inspiring. The GMC got wierd. Maybe Game of Throwns did him in. But I guess now instead of dressing to take games off, he can skip that part and just be “off.”

If he’s able to quickly adjust to the speed of the NFL, Winfield in our backfield is another reason to have high hopes for the defense. We have the best front line in the NFL at stopping the run, the NFL sack leader, one of the best LB tandems in the league, and now an up and coming secondary. Couple that with what should be one of, if not, the leagues best offenses, and you know why everyone is jumping on the Bucs SB wagon.

Several teams had Winfield as a first round pick. If he was 2 inches taller, he would have been a top 10 pick. Glad we got him in the second round.

AWIII will go down as the years best pick and a steal in the second round overall

Weinfield looks very in shape as well. Wirfs sending Jordan to Pancake House game one would be sweet.

About the only time I will probably ever agree with Clean House.
