Gerald McCoy Counsels Tristan Wirfs

Gerald McCoy, one of the newest members of the Dallas Cowboys, is serving up unsolicited advice to Buccaneers rookie manbeast offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs.
It seems McCoy heard Wirfs telling media yesterday that he takes pride in being a nice guy on the field, winning snaps versus opponent sand then helping them up off the turf –and then repeating that all game long. Wirfs said he’s definitely not the trash-talking, angry-warrior type.
That must have struck a nerve with six-time Pro Bowler McCoy, who often was criticized during his Tampa days for being too nice on the field.
In fact, two Bucs defensive line coaches back in 2013 got on McCoy’s ass about that, in addition to fans.
But McCoy never changed and never wanted to. Who could forget his in-game, Monday Night Football apology to Ben Roethlisberger after a roughing the passer penalty?
Yesterday, shortly after Wirfs concluded his news conference, McCoy fired off a direct Tweet to the rookie.
@TristanWirfs74 Keep being yourself. Dont let anybody change that regardless of what they say or do. Best thing you can do is be true to yourself. Be nice after the whistle and off the field and destroy everything moving in between the whistle!! Much success to you my brotha!! ✊🏾

Joe appreciates McCoy’s point, but Joe doesn’t like the rush to meddle in Bucs affairs. McCoy himself has stated that he felt neglected as a rookie by the Buccaneers because he didn’t have a veteran around to guide him and counsel him. Well, Wirfs has veterans around him on the offensive line. Ali Marpet even somehow got in to One Buc Palace early to work out on the field with Wirfs.
Let the Bucs take care of the Bucs. Joe suspects McCoy didn’t text Marpet or anyone one else at One Buc Palace for permission to get in Wirfs’ head.

Good! The slack-jawed mouth breathers around here were too dumb to understand thst one can play hard and succeed between the whistles. What happens afterwards is meaningless unless you do something dumb like stomp on a player after the play is dead.
Hopefully the mouth breathers won’t give him the GMC treatment.

What an enigma Gerald McCoy will be in Bucs history. I am not a hater per se, but I suspect like most fans. Never really warmed up to the guy. I always heard how great he was as a player with all those Pro Bowls he made every year. So obviously his peers must think he is a good player. But all I can judge is what I saw as a casual fan. Does anyone remember one Gerald McCoy play that was a game changer? One play in the 4th Qtr to stop a drive and seal a win. Because I can’t remember any that stand out. Close your eyes and think Sapp, and you can remember play after play that stood out. Ultimately that will be McCoy’s legacy and it may not be fair to him. To be the heir apparent to Sapp, and never meet that level with Bucs fan.

They say there was one against Atlanta. It wasnt his nice guy routine it was the clown show he would put on by dancing while down by 21 or showing up in his kimona. His crying one minute then laughing the next to get on camera. Meanwhile Cappa plays with a broken bone. All you needed to see was Newton and McCoy hamming it up for the camera with thdir batman and robbin super hero disgraceful display. That ended as fast as it started! If Wirfs is looking for guidance stick to players on the Bucs roster.

Lee Roy Selmon was a damn nice guy on the field. I’d say the Best Buccaneer of all time (not even close) is not a bad guy to emulate.
But McCoy is right about one thing: be yourself and don’t let others make you into something you are not. That worked for Sapp too.

Nothing wrong with being a nice guy. And GMC is. Nothing wrong with helping your opponent up before you hopefully knock him down again on the next play. GMC used to do that most of the time. Really now, this isn’t actual combat, right? And it appears Wirf may or may not be the same way.
Here’s the thing with me. I don’t take McCoy’s tweet (yes, consider that…it’s a tweet…meant really for MANY) as an issue. But he could offer inspiring words for Wirfs without the cast of thousands watching. Writing and commenting, with some stewing over it, is probably exactly what GMC wants. He’s always been a ham, always had a need for attention. That is where he is immature, insecure. That contributes to a team’s losing mentality. If GMC was sincerely wanting to help Wirfs and not himself, he’d be more quiet, low key, and personal. He’d be the “humble servant.”
I like GMC. But I never liked this stuff. Not from anyone.

Hopefully, as the Bucs put their losing ways further and further into their past, there will be less of a compulsion to compare our up-and-coming stars that give us hope (there’s that word) to those “never-were” guys that too often disappointed, and ultimately just proved to be wastes of Bucs fans time, and seasons. Some guys were handed it all, and were kept way too long without any real benefit. The two most recent are, of course, Jameis Winston and Gerald McCoy. Da’Qaun Bowers and Adrian Clayborn are a couple more that come to mind, though the Bucs didn’t waste as much money and time on them. While so many do it, me included, it will be nice when the memories..no, the nightmares. of the years Winston and GMC were here, go away and we don’t drag them to the surface again, and again.
Like Suh did last year (coming in at DT, wearing #93) in making public statements that he was clearly not here to replace GMC, Wirfs would do well to publicly state “Yeah, lots to learn. I appreciate the sage advice, especially from teammates who are proven winners, like Tom Brady. I am my own man, true, and I think those who want to help me get better.”

Was never a GMC fan. Always felt like he was just happy to be in the NFL and wasn’t trying to be a true game wrecker like Sapp. Does anyone know who was the 1st player to hug the commissioner when drafted? No I can’t remember a certain play that stands out for the good but certainly remember the apology in the middle of the play to Big Ben and the dancing on the sidelines. Funny thing just last year the guy that replaced him I can recall several big plays 2 of which resulted with him scoring touchdowns.
I like what the rookie said put a guy on his butt smile and help him up and do that all game is frustrating to the guy getting pancaked.

Why all the McCoy bashing? He played well most of his tenure here and gave us our moneys worth. Was he the kind of locker room leader you would want in the locker room, to hammer guys slacking and making them accountable? Probably not. But if we had a couple guys like Brady, and Gronkowski, we would have had that and McCoy would have been fine. There was no winning culture or Kick A leader for well over a decade on the Bucs.

GMC was a cancer with the Bucs and we were glad to see him go! Nobody on the Bucs team should be in communication with him. Wirf needs to let Haeg or another Buc lineman mentor him except for D. Smith.

We should be happy that McCoy cares about his former team.
I love it when former players and coaches still talk like they are a part of the Bucs family (i.e. – Dungy, Sapp, Brooks, Ronde, Giles, Dominick).
The flipside are those guys who look at us like an ex-girlfriend (i.e. – Gruden, Keshawn).
His best days are behind him, which I am sure he is aware of, and Dallas is a likely pit stop on the road to retirement. It’s not like anything he does on or of the field is going to significantly impact us winning games. Dallas is letting him squeeze the last bit of football out of himself, so why can’t he still root on the team that drafted him and helped him accomplish a significant career in the NFL?

Gerald who? Wirfs needs to focus on blasting his opponents with unapologetic pancake blocks. Watching a little Conrad Dobler tape and hanging out with Ryan Jensen is recommended to properly indoctrinate the rookie.

He wants to be a mentor so bad that he’ll force it onto anyone who will listen. The thing is, he could have contacted Wirfs privately and told him this, but he wanted everyone to see it.
He might be a genuinely nice guy, but he wants to make sure everyone knows he’s nice. The “I’m a nice guy” routine wears thin.
