Edge Rusher Devin White?
July 28th, 2020Bucco Bruce Arians dropped a quality nugget on Joe today during an online chat with media.
Yes, the Bucs’ pass-rushing depth isn’t what it was last year. But Arians said today that he still loves the Tampa Bay pass rush.
Arians seemed high on second-year LB/DE Anthony Davis, who went sackless last season and missed a lot of time with injuries. He also added that “Lavonte [David] and Devin [White] to continue to grow as pass rushers,” which makes sense given that the Bucs led the NFL in blitzes last season.
Joe followed up to ask Arians how he wants White to grow as a rusher.
Unfortunately, Arians’ online audio locked up for about five seconds as he responded, but the following was heard clearly.
“Use his speed, maybe a counter move. I think he’s working on some stuff where if we stick him out on the edge and let him come, he knows what he’s doing,” Arians said of White.
White coming off the edge would be a new wrinkle and quite intriguing, and possibly necessary given the Bucs’ depth. That’s tough duty at 6 feet, 240 pounds.

I thought he was talking about Nelson… I missed the part about Davis.

No way……atleast not lining him up on the line that is
Besides……the bucs are running a 3-4 anyways so it’s pointless.

I don’t see him playing end on the D line either. Doesn’t mean he can’t come from either side tho on an outside rush. I’m sure he’ll line up wide, and twist inside too with his rush. He’ll just be doing it as the mike.

I have him penciled in for 3-5 sacks this year, just not from the outside.

“DW will get his sacks on disguised blitzes
NO WAY in hell will be a standup pass rusher
DW is lucky to be measured at 6 feet
He will be easily blocked if he is lining up in front of a Olineman
However he is fast, quick and a playmaker that will get 6 sacks from stunts and blitzes after snap”

6ft 240lbs of whoopass. If DW can actually make some edge rush moves, with his speed, that could be something special.

I like White as a player, but not coming off the edge. Too small!

von Miller and Khalil Mack are 6’3” and 245. And they get plenty of sacks. I don’t think that 3 inches of height shorter but 3/10 of a second faster will hinder him from being effective from blitzing as a stand up edge rusher. I would feel that a shorter person for a 6,6” offensive tackle would be harder than a taller guy that he can punch up high in his chest. With a shorter guy he is pushing around his head. And can get illegal hands to the face or not be able to slow down as much because he can’t push him out of balance by only being able to push his shoulders and higher. Look what an offensive tackle looks like trying to block a cornerback blitz. It’s 90% of the time a whiff. Shaq Barrett is 6’2” 249 and he led the league in sacks.

Dwight Freeney was 6’ 1” and had 125.5 sacks. He used his leverage to his advantage. That said, I’d rather have Devin White rushing up the middle than on the edge.

This will be year two of Todd Bowles’ scheme. I fully expect him to up the ante for his guys this season.
I want to see surprises in nearly every game.
