Gauging The Value Of Brady’s Workouts

June 28th, 2020

Does Tom Brady working out at a Tampa school with teammates really mean anything significant when it comes to the Bucs winning games in September or October?

Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner and Bucs legend Mike Alstott have opinions.

Warner was on 98.7 FM in Arizona this week talking about how he never participated in private offseason workouts with teammates through his 12-year NFL career.

In Warner’s mind, offseason was for family and he didn’t even throw a football during that time. Warner said he would get his arm back in full swing after a few days of training camp and just wasn’t a guy who felt he needed to throw year-round like many quarterbacks do.

But those sessions can be valuable when it comes to “getting to know players,” Warner said, “but I don’t think it’s a cure-all that’s going to necessarily carry over and make you a great football team.”

Alstott joined the Ira Kaufman Podcast recently and referenced how he believes the Brady workouts likely are more productive than official spring practices for offensive players.

Why? Because the Bucs are getting used to being taught by Brady and there are no distractions from special teams meetings and responsibilities. Players can run through their offensive work, then go hang out and watch the film together over lunch and just get a little deeper into it together, Alstott said.

Joe certainly believes Brady’s workouts are valuable, but how much remains to be seen. Joe would be more excited about the Brady workouts if the rookie running backs were there, but Joe has heard nothing of them being in attendance.

What a player becomes is determined by what the foundation of the person is, having time to mold with players like Brady and Gronk and be able to gauge themselves to players who have had succeeded at the highest level in a informal atmosphere allows a player to improve their skill slowly. Being able to make small changes in their technique will translation to greater success in whatever forum they are in. This time is more valuable as the time in camp will be a competitive situation so the better your technique is at this point the less you will compromise it when you are under stress.

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

Brady held individual workouts at Gillette Stadium when he was with Patriots.
He is a player-coach- this is how he prepares and why he has been successful- this is nothing new for him, except the lack of Spring minicamp due to The Sickness.

  3. ModHairKen Says:

    Warner, one ring. Brady, six.

  4. Chesapeake Bay Bucco Says:

These workouts can only be beneficial. Imagine if TB12 was hiding out in his house w/o being heard from, afraid of the virus. Now THAT would get some negative news coverage! AND I suspect Kurt is the exception in terms of showing up without throwing a ball/working his arm into shape….and frankly, I would not recommend that to a QB…..sets you up for a sore arm after a few days of summer camp…..risky

  5. John Sinclear Says:

Don’t think the rookies are allowed to join in, at least until they are signed by the team.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

Better than nothing, great for personal team building, but not as effective as an actual, organized team practice.

I fully endorse the Brady workouts. He gets to establish himself as The Alpha Leader.

  7. gp Says:

I’ll never understand why the NFLPA fights for less practice time. More practice and better conditioning will lead to fewer injuries and better overall play. Isn’t the union supposed to protect it’s members? Some of those injuries will be career ending.

  8. ClodHopper Says:

A cure all to make you a great team? Of course not. But in a game of inches, every little bit helps. Are the caps that swimmers wear a cure all to make them a great swimmer? No but at that level of competition, every millisecond helps.

  9. Buczilla Says:

While I don’t think that these workouts are better than the organized team stuff, they sure as hell aren’t hurting. Can you imagine if Brady just walked into training camp cold turkey without throwing a single ball to his new receivers?

  10. ManzielMadness Says:

I’d be in favor of adding another RB for the right price… maybe offer a 6th to Green Bay for Jamaal Williams or to Baltimore for Gus Edwards. Not a lot of promising names in FA. Not a big fan of Freeman (think he’s broke down) but Lamar Miller could also be worth a look on a short term deal.

  11. El Buco Realisto Says:

It’s time to hold these celebrities accountable that do not think basic public safety does not apply to them!!!!!!!!!! That is why myself and many “real” fans demand that the Nflpa and the NFL offices SUSPEND tom brady for the first three games, for endangering public safety and flaunting health guidelines!!!!!!!!!!!!! This public display of accountability will go a long ways in public health awareness!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three game suspension for tom brady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And that is why Warner only has one ring.

  13. Craig Says:

Timing is everything between a QB and receiver. The more they work at it, the tighter the offense will be.

It also allows them to get to know Tom Brady as a person, not a legend. That might be the most important thing, filing the gloss off of the awe factor.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

@El Buco Realisto: You’re quite the Karen of the Red Queens, huh?

    “Off with his head!”

Brady is under obligation to win NFL games, not promote “public health awareness.” The former is his JOB. The latter is Social Justice or something.

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

How many current and former players have achieved what Tom Brady has? Few if any are even close. Are they really qualified to judge him? I don’t think so. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are the only only Quarterbacks I can think of. I haven’t heard either one ever say anything negative about Tom. Kurt Warner is a joke compared to Tom Brady.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

I do not know about the rookie RB’s. Are they under contract yet. If not that could be an answer due to legal liability.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Realist(o) would still have “pressbox” Smitty running the defense. Smitty should have been suspended indefinitely for impersonating a defensive coordinator. Realist is still running out cherry-picked stats from a 2-year window and is now worried that a real QB will put less pressure on the defense, by and large improving it overall while not even playing “D”.

  18. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Leave TB12 Alone!!! He knows what he is doing. I think that it is great that he is building chemistry with his team mates!! Practicing with 12 team mates is not a serious risk. Can it be any worse then touching a gas pump? Gas pumps never get cleaned & you get all the germs of all the idiots that touched it before you…

  19. Stanglassman Says:

If Gas pumps were people you’d have a good point.

  20. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

    Stanglassman Says:
“If Gas pumps were people you’d have a good point.”
    .
    .

    Huh?

From the guy who claims that it’s racist to criticize somebody (when the criticism has nothing to do with race), it’s already hard to hard to take you seriously. Then you say something like this.

  21. bojim Says:

el buco. your’re here to yank our chains. But your still an a hole.

  22. bojim Says:

    Or a Joe.

  23. Greg Says:

    @realisto
How can you sign off with go bucs when you are everything but a bucs fan? Embarrsising!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Roy T. Buford Says:

It’s about leadership style. Brady has his way; Kurt has his. Both may be effective, but Brady’s is long proven…over and over. And over. Warner. Many consider him a flash in the pan. Warner is certainly more successful than any other Bucs QB…until now.

I defer to TB12. Kurt can go comment somewhere else. He is irrelevent to what is happening here. Another talking head.

  25. Greg Says:

    embarrassing^

  26. 541BucsFan Says:

Essentially if Brady things they are important that’s all that matters.

  27. Bucco bruce Says:

They are working on a play right now that will be the game-winning touchdown in the super bowl!

  28. Ship Thief Says:

It’s late joe(s), yes, but come on!
You’re going to wait till tomorrow to post the news?

    BB has a new quarterback

  29. SOEbuc Says:

Nicely put atrain. This is how you know how much of a football freak this guy is. Good and healthy at 43 with six rings. Last was 2018. I’ll give it six weeks to see what the offense looks like. PLEASE win us two badass rings for you to wear. Throw the Pat’s in the sock drawer.

    #RedZoneKillas

    GO BUCS!!!

  30. gp Says:

    Ship Thief
So, you think cross dressing Cam is going to be a hit in Boston, the birth place of Jim Crow laws?

  31. Oneilbucs Says:

If it was Jamies holding work outs he would be called dumb stupid and slow . But since it’s Brady it’s all good . Lol lol

  32. Crabberbill Says:

I’ve got a question for B.A. Your job is to caoch our players not to create head coaches for other teams !! How can you say this ? I think all of our coaches are great and can do thier jobs well Coach our players and do your job !!!
