Joe heard lovable Buccaneers broadcasting legend Gene Deckerhoff drop an inaccurate statement about the Bucs defense on national TV this week and Joe wondered whether a lot of Tampa Bay fans might be under the same impression as Deckerhoff?
(Yes, Joe knows Bucs fans are always paying attention.)
The comment was about the Tampa Bay defense and forcing turnovers. Deckerhoff praised the resurgence of the Bucs defense and he thinks they’ll make huge strides again this season, especially when it comes to forcing turnovers.
“That young secondary, whoof, look out. Those guys are going to be ballhawks this year,” Deckerhoff said on NFL Network. “We couldn’t pick off, couldn’t force turnovers last year. This year the Bucs will be a takeaway machine; I’ll promise you that.”
Well, the problem is the Bucs did force a bundle of turnovers last season.
In fact, their 28 forced turnovers were fifth-best in the NFL and ranked third in the NFC. Joe’s actually concerned the Bucs won’t match their 2019 pass rush and, subsequently, might fall back a notch when it comes to forcing turnovers.
Prior to last year, the last time the Bucs were strong at taking the ball away was in 2016, when Mike Smith’s troops scored 29 turnovers.

Well, with any luck Drew Brees misses time and the Buc’s D gets to be the beneficiary of Jameis turnovers. 2 games vs Jameis should be good for 6 turnovers easy.

It doesn’t feel like we were a good takeaway team, I guess because most of the turnovers we witnessed went the other way. I excuse Mr Deckerhoff for his flub.

The difference between now and 2016 was in 2016 it was a bunch of old men that were playing we better then they should have been at the time.
we didn’t have any young players getting better in 2016. this last year we had only young players getting better out there. With more experience and more talent they can compensate for the weaker pass rush.
Also don’t forget the team with the worst pass rush in the NFL last year had the best secondary. A good pass rush helps the secondary but they are not always intertwined.

In regard to the pass rush, Nassib was pretty good, but he literally acted like the team clown and somehow became a captain. I’m glad he moved on and hope they can replace his production with someone nastier. I like suhs demeaner and JPPs motor and willpower.
Dean looks like a ball hawk, white will be causing and recovering fumbles. David is reliable as usual to force fumbles. I hope the safety Adams is around, I know he had 3 in one game a few seasons ago. I’m curious to see is Shaq can keep his mind right and bring the same intensity as last year. It could be easy to get pissed not getting paid afte 19 1/2.
I’m excited about the rookie Winfield, and if Evans can play, he wrecks people.
I love Revis’s cousin too, he’s a baller. We should try to add Clowney somehow

JW’s turnovers didn’t help last years team and the lack of them will have no effect on this years team …just wanted to put that out there!!! But football will be football!!!

Being on the positive side of the turn over battle will make it look and feel like we’re getting more. Getting more than last year would definitely be a positive as well. Looking forward to some serious blow outs because I don’t think Brady came here to hand the ball off.

It seemed that Gene was discussing, the secondary, but no one else is!!!!!!!! So let us take a closer look at that so-called ball hawking turnovers !!!!!!!!!!!!! Taking the “overall” takeaways stats does not speak about “the secondary” !!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty telling stats!!!!!!! Especially when you factor in the massive injuries that occurred in 2018!!!!!!!!! Throw in the soft QB’s schedule of 2019 and all the back up’s they faced, One has to question calling the current secondary “ball hawks”!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it’s funny to see that the defensive passing yards are no longer discussed!!!!!!!! It was such a huge topic for some for the last the last year!!!!!!!!!!! And the Bucs were 30th last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was wonder the same thing. teacherman777, what does Cappa have anything to do with turnovers? Sounds like you got a real beef with Cappa. He was only a second year player and had to make up for Dotson’s poor running support. I think Cappa will continue and build upon last year – which in my opinion was good. He even played well with a broken hand.

kappa got his ARM broke in the 2nd quarter against the saints, not his hand, and by the way he played the ENTIRE game after sustaining the injury, KAPPA is one TOUGH mofo you can believe that

Its very possible less turnovers also come from simply being on the field less. I believe Brady will manage the game much better which should keep the offense on the field more and defense rested. The defense can then be more effective when it counts. The key is winning the +/- turnover battle, that was impossible with Winston. Accumulating stats is meaningless if they don’t lead to wins…..there is a balance. I think if we finish Top 10 offense/defense we’ll be in position for the playoffs.

Great question!!!!!!! The Secondary grabbed 5 int’s of those last 6 games!!!!!!!!! They really padded those INT stats against QB’s like David Blough !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They really took off against all those back-up QB’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondary is not super bowl caliber let’s face it. They play single coverage and get torched even w all the qb pressures Barrett was getting. We messed up by not getting Ramsey last year that’s still playing in rookie contract w Rams. The defense we run we need at least one shut down corner so the safety can aid the other. Dean a 4.3 on a track field but he was chasing guys last year not baiting qbs, so get off that speed thing. Did the unit progress yes they did but still lack turnover instinct. Front line just got one year older Suh is solid but not a terror anymore. JPP not a full year last year. Devin got lost a few times last year let’s hope he learned and hits the film room. The film room made a difference at end of year for secondary now lets hole they don’t believe the hype. At the end of the day we still have won nothing in years not even second place.

BigHog I understand you’re a Winston lover. But nobody can take anything you say seriously. When you say not having his turnovers won’t have an effect on this years team. Clean House is starting to be more realistic while also still supporting Winston I respect that. I use to like Winston but he start losing me in his second year the ints and fumbles were taking a toll on me he has talent. But his mental lags behind his talent so far in his career.

Re-watch the season.
Cappa is not a starting guard!
He is a 5 position backup/ “6th man”
He needs 2 more years to become and NFL lineman.

Hes too slow to play guard.
His legs are too weak to block big DT’s.
Developmental player? Sure. Guardian of the GOAT? No!
