“Tom Texted Me & Said, ‘Football’s Fun Again'”

What a great look here inside the dedication of Tom Brady and why being Buccaneers quarterback coach this season might be the second easiest gig at One Buc Palace.

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Tom House is the personal throwing coach of Brady and Drew Brees, in addition to having worked with many other quarterbacks and baseball players through the years on performance.

Many believe there is a cutting edge of performance science  — and then there’s 73-year-old House, who is a cut above.

House opened up in a recent video chat with GQ Sports published this week. He detailed how he’s in touch with Brady about once per week.

“All he needs is an evaluation of his throwing motion,” House explained. “When he sends a video, I pretend like I’ve never seen it before and he’ll either text me or leave me a voice mail and say, ‘Look, I just filmed about 20 throws. Have a look. Give me a shout if you see anything, or let’s talk this afternoon or tomorrow. And we’ll do it.’

“We look at initially his timing and his kinetic sequencing. And then the throwing variables that most coaches would teach: balance and posture, stride and momentum, opposite and equal. And then the throwing variables that are quantified and specific to him. He’ll have his [screen] capture in front of him and I’ll say, ‘on your third throw to the left have a look at that, your front side flew open a bit.

“That’ll just be my eyes talking and I’ll give him some of the cues that we use in his vocabulary for his teach. It’s just like being there but we’re looking at video at the same time.”

House explained how Brady has a specific vocabulary for his training, and part of that is mental and neurological rewiring to combat aging.

(Side note: Greg Schiano once insisted to Joe that Josh Freeman didn’t need a QB coach skilled in the fine art of throwing mechanics because Freeman wouldn’t have gotten where he was in 2012 if he needed more throwing coaching.)

House went on to explain that chemistry is a very real thing, and quarterback-receiver is like pitcher and catcher in baseball. He said Rob Gronkowski and Brady have the ultimate chemistry. After Gronk signed with the Bucs, House said he got a memorable message from Brady: “Tom texted me and said, ‘Football’s fun again.'”

20 years with an anal retentive coach is a long time to be at.

  2. DanBucsFan Says:

Things like this is why I wish Winston would’ve signed here to back up Brady for couple years and learn the art of it. Its like training with a jedi lol

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You bet it’s fun for Tom…….having Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Gronk & DARE!!!!

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

I would love to read House’s analysis of JayMiss’s in-game throwing motion.
That would be an entertaining read I’m sure.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

Dan, you don’t divorce your wife and then let her live in the house with your new girlfriend.

  6. Jason Says:

    Doosh.

If this guy is Brees’ throwing coach also, then that might just happen.

  7. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Dan Winston wanted way too much. He had to test free agency to see that no team wanted to pay him elite QB money or even make him their starter.

Also having Winston still here would really mess with the team dynamics. It was time to move on so we did.

  8. El Buco Realisto Says:

We will see how “fun” it is for the old goat, once he gets a close look at ole stale biscuit sloppy coaching and mistakes on game day that will cost wins!!!!!!!!!! We will see how “fun” it is when brady is having to drag along the anchor know as ole stale biscuit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Eddie Says:

I hope things are this exciting when the season starts.

  10. VegasBuc Says:

@El Buco Realisto is scared of everything. Man up Buco, just man up. Why are you so soft??

  11. BringBucsBack Says:

Joe, that Schiano footnote leaves me speechless. Did he really say that?!

  12. CleanHouse Says:

As much as I like Winston for what he brings to the table. I am starting to get super excited to witness Brady. I’m already enjoying the heck out of him working with our guys. I’ve been watching Brady footage and documentaries. Pretty amazing stuff and I’m really glad for him that he is feeling the joy of football.

This guy has laser focus and knows where he’s going and what he demands.

    I believe the
Bucs offense are going to thrive from a mental standpoint.

I believe they need to find a next level veteran leader from a mental standpoint in their secondary as well.

  13. CleanHouse Says:

And as much as I would have liked Winston backing up and learning from Brady, I think it would have distracted Brady from his own flow. He has to kick it up a few levels even for him, because it’s all new guys, coaching and offense seemingly. He needs his focus, he’s human.

I love the idea of Jameis learning from Brees on their dime and time. I will root for JAmeis. I’m a fan of his.

I would be open to him playing here again one day, if he can snap it together mentally which is possible.

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ BringBucsBack

You must have not been here during the Schiano “Toes on the line” reign of terror years.

I personally hold Greg Schiano responsible for ruining Josh Freeman.

“Dan, you don’t divorce your wife and then let her live in the house with your new girlfriend.”

    Well said!!!

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

First off…what gives anybody the idea that JW has anything to learn from Brady?

He’s had five years…six if you count FSU with the best QB coaching available. Did he ever really improve? He came into the league with the reputation of being reckless with the football. FIVE YEARS later that is still his rep. Brady is a football player not a shrink…JW’s problems are between the ears…he’s a choker and you can’t coach that out of somebody.

Secondly..why would Brady want to work with JW? Seriously? Because he’s such a nice guy? Because JW is a nice guy? JW would be nothing more than a horrible distraction from TB12’s perspective.

And then there is what Dewey said!

He’s not soft, he just needs a target to hate. GMC is no longer here, so he chose a new target.

Actually, yes, he did improve…in every area except the turnovers.

  19. Howard Cosell Says:

Nice feel-good story. Howard hopes it translates to winning and not the usual scheme Glazer epic fail that we’re all so acclimated to

  20. Nick2 Says:

Yeah I cant get the take that think Winston should come back up Brady. We tell him to walk we found someone else, who in their right mind would come back under those conditions? Its the ultimate indignity Tom Brady or no Tom Brady. Whats odd about it is we probably would have given him more than the $1 million per year and made him 2nd string not 3rd. I dont think Jameis inteceptions were the issue btw i think it was his troubled past that had teams passing on him but who knows.

  21. Buc’N’A Says:

When this group is having fun playing football…
    Look out NFL !

  22. Hodad Says:

F Winston already, he’s the enemy now in case you supposed Buc fans forgot he plays for the stinking Aints!!

    ……………

Rarely has a more true statement been made.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

Sorry, I don’t believe in the “everybody is a victim” mentality that some do…If anyone ruined Josh Freeman, it was Josh Freeman.

  25. D1 Says:

    Bonzai,

If we remove turnovers from Winston’s play, what specific areas do you see as improved? If every other part of his game has improved it shouldn’t be difficult to find a few.

BTW, I believe that there’s plenty of stats that support your opinion . But also I agree with stpete. Winston’s stats (some of them) show improvement, not all though.

But if we look elsewhere, like the technical and mental aspects of playing the position, the idea that Winston’s improved takes on a completely different set of points to review. Using these points, the case that winston is basically the same player as He was in college becomes crystal clear. The problems that winston had in college haven’t changed.

Of course the next logical line of thought is to pose the question, why. Why hasn’t he improved? Without being in the locker room, it’s a guessing game. But there’s sufficient evidence to support the supposition that more closely aligns with stpete’s opinion.

Stpete is aware I disagree with his word choice. But that’s ultimately semantics and not a refutation of his overall conclusion.

If we were to look at Winston compared to Mahomes, and are limited to choosing one aspect of their own game that can explain why one is a superstar in the making while the other is dangerous close to being a bust.
    What would you point to?

  26. D1 Says:

    Joe,

Are you suggesting that an individual has a choice?

Choice A, they take responsibility for their own actions and lives.
    or
Choice B, Not take that burden and get an unlimited lifetime supply of scapegoats to blame for any real or imaginary failures ?

I’m going to say B sounds pretty good… There’s gotta be a catch right?

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Bonzai

“Actually, yes, he did improve…in every area except the turnovers.”

Cmon Bonzai that as bad as the old joke…”Other than that Mrs Lincoln how did you enjoy the play.?”

You could take almost any NFL QB and say…hey…just push…keep pushing it and I’ll never yell about the resulting ints. ANY QB so freed could put up glowing STATISTICS except of course for the one that counts…WINS!

  28. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, D1, life is full of choices.

  29. Sauron's eye Says:

This is such a settled argument. TB is the GOAT. His competitor was Peyton Manning for most of his career, and he usually beat him. Great quarterbacks win or lose games in the final 2 minutes. JW usually had us in the L column by half time. Cant wait for this season.

  30. Chip Chipperson Says:

been a long time…but st pete and realisto are still boring.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Seriously, guys???

Let’s see, his yards improved. His red zone play improved. His deep ball improved.

    Let’s not rewrite history here.

  32. $acbuc$ Says:

Look anybody can catch when the ball is in the bucket. Tom drops that ball right in the bucket 95.5% of the time. Unbelievable touch and accuracy that alone will make this offense explode.

What’s all this talk about our RB room. You untalented talent evaluators claim we need a veteran when Rojo and Dare look good. All Tom need is a back that can make you miss and all our backs are shifty. The draw play is gonna be awesome with Terrific surprising defenses. So when Rojo and Dare both get 1000 yards all purpose don’t say you had faith in them Joes. The Devonta Freeman talks and the 3rd down catching back is gonna get QUIET if we have a season. So man up and say you doubt them young fresh legs. I think Rojo made some amazing runs last year. I think Dare caught some key 3rd down passes last year. All with long whined up slow decision making throwing them the pill. The timing of the offense has been slightly off since winsnone got here. Go look experts! You been analyzing football so long!

  33. $acbuc$ Says:

Call me Mr ain’t miss a snap since1997 and all them years of journeymen QB damaged my fantasy! I can’t believe how many times I woke up hating Tom Brady. Then after watching him perform constantly for some many years I realized he was just TERRIFIC. I used to say dam it would be awesome to have a QB like him and we got him NOW. In a pandemic with the season in question. I’m heartbroken. I need to vent for a minute Joes, I’m hurting!

I’m in my football feelings y’all. After watching Trent get hammered behind a terrible line with no WRs for years. Brett freaking Farve ,Sterling Sharpe, Jackie Harris, Antonio Freeman, Dorsey Levens, Ahmad Green and that Defense kicked our arses for years. Blocking every chance we had to get to the playoffs I still rocked my Hardy Nickerson with pride. Then Trent left us and won a chip with the Ravens. Heartbroken I almost burnt my jersey! Not knowing much about football front offices I didn’t know who was to blame. Now I know!

I used to say who’s drafting players and why we can’t get no good players in free agency. Nobody wants to play for the yucs! I was a laughing stock amongst my colleagues. Shawn King comes to town but all I can remember is a pedestrian offense that went 1st 2nd 3rd punt. Randy Moss mossing the whole team even rhonde. Herman Moore and Barry Sanders. Getting torch by Aaron Brooks Duece McCallister Joey Horn and a young Marcus Colston. If we didn’t win that Super Bowl I was still having nightmares of Ricky freaking Proehl out jumping Brian catch jump Kelly. He knock that ball down we go then not in 2002. The second part of my nightmare was THE BERT EMMANUEL rule. I just threw up in my mouth.

  34. $acbuc$ Says:

After we won the Super Bowl I just knew we would go back to back because the team was clicking on all cylinders. Peyton Manning in the forth quarter showed us we was lucky to get close because we ain’t sniff the playoffs since. We was 5-0 one year with Griese quarterbacking Gruden super long play calling verbiage. Which Brad Johnson and Griese is the only QBs who can say or probably understand that wordy stuff. Ha! Then Zack Thomas comes on a blitz and hit our QB low and put him out. We was stuck with Bruce Gradkowski I liked ta cried. Now we in a QB carousel for how many years now. Jeff Garcia Josh Freeman for 5years Winsnone for 5years. The Goat in a pandemic after all them year of busty QB play I’m going crazy here. A game manager could of got us closer to the playoffs. I’m feeling like it might not even be a season and we got the GOAT. So I’m venting to my fellow Joes! I need a hug. Lol

  35. $acbuc$ Says:

Joe quit biting my style homie. You want me to drop this good off them let me make a deposit. Knock it off with the moderation. Some of your poster are lil girls with potty mouths and I get restricted language moderation. Stop it

I got the goods for y’all listen. We being snub by the hall of fame for having ALL our boys on the same team. Plus we didn’t win multiple championships with our squad. Rice Rhonde and Lynch are getting overlooked!
