NFL Films Guru: Brady Slipped In Pocket Movement And Precision Accuracy

The 40-year NFL Films producer and film guru Greg Cosell, who many fans know from his work breaking down players on ESPN NFL Matchup, sees a drop in the play of new Bucs QB Tom Brady.
Cosell talked about it yesterday on WEEI radio in Boston.
Joe talked Bucs with Cosell at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine and, as always, he was very level-headed, much like he was on radio yesterday. Also, Cosell is always quick to say he won’t talk about a certain player if he hasn’t spent enough time with the guy’s film, which Joe always appreciates.
As for Brady, Cosell says the Bucs shouldn’t expect the Brady many fans remember.
“I mean, I think he’s still a very good player,” he said. “I think there were two things that I thought were just not quite at the same level [in 2019] that we know of Tom Brady and his first ballot Hall of Fame career.
“I would say that his pocket movement was not quite as good as it has been throughout his career because he has been a master at being able to manipulate the pocket and navigate the pocket, find that quiet space to throw the ball with good balance, still seeing down field. He has been a master at that. And the other thing I would say is I thought that his ball placement wasn’t quite as consistency precise. He was not inaccurate, but it wasn’t quite as consistently precise as we’ve seen through pretty much all of his career; it wasn’t exactly at that level.
“Those were two things I would say were just below the Hall of Fame level that has been his career.”
Cosell went on to say that because Brady has always been such a grinder when it comes to building precision through repetition, this screwed up offseason will be a factor as he tries to figure out new receivers — no matter how talented they may be.

Lack of good receivers can make any QB look bad.
I think Brady will be just fine here in Tampa, especially with our receivers, as long as we are able to pick up the constant blitzes we are sure to see.

Cosell is a straight shooter and excellent evaluator. He’s a talking head I listen to and is well respected. I would expect Brady’s skills to continue eroding as they have for years now that he’s well past his prime. Makes sense right? Here’s the catch, his slowly deteriorating skill set is still more than enough to win a SB and the Bucs have a strong enough supporting cast to get the job done.

Cosell is fair with this assessment. It is no shot at Brady. It is the reality of being 43 at the start of the season. The things Cosell mentioned had zero to do with receivers. I believe it is unfair to Brady to expect the production he had with Moss over a decade ago.
The repetition aspect is what concerns me the most. A QB must build chemistry with his receivers. That lets him know where the receiver likes the ball, timing in and out of breaks, etc. Just saying “Brady has weapons now” isn’t enough because Brady has no chemistry with said weapons.

President, The sickness, BLM, and the Brady national analysts are the worst things in the US in that order. HE HAD A TERRIBLE OLINE WITH NO ONE TO THROW TO! IN 2019! Thats gonna make all your numbers drop. I say to these idiots once again but it is obviously not sinking in. BRADY WAS #5 QB AND WON THE SB IN 2018!!! Now you want to tell me the franchise GOAT leader is going to be an 8-8 team with the best receiver’s in the NFL??? Hold on to your national bandwagon. When it comes to Brady throwing, we’re going to slice and dice all day into the end zone. Not a huge fan of SAS and Skip but they’re the rare guys that think Bucs are a SB contender. I give you guys the right to jump up and piss on Sharp or Max Kellerman faces if the Bucs go 12-4 or deep in the playoffs.

OK….here’s the deal……we have 1472 professional opinions on Brady so far and they run the gamut.
He’s gotten older….more frail….lost some pop in his arm…..a tad less accurate…..less comfortable in the pocket…..a former superstar….
But none of them say he will turn it over…..I’ll take that all the way to the bank.

Hey Joe I just saw an article saying Brady is holding a practice at the highschool again. I think that’s great news what made me smile even more is that it was reported that some of our young DBs were there as well. 👏👏👏

Pretty much everything that shows up in my Google feed from this site is you talking about Brady and how he’s lost a step and so and so thinks the Bucs will go 8-8 and you throw little digs in calling him a trespasser and a home invader. Am I making this up? I like to read the comments to hear how happy actual Bucs fans are about having Brady and Gronks but otherwise your content is crap.

If brady runs the offense he will only see a slight uptick in ints.If he is forced to run the 20 yards down field plays the entire game every week like Jameis was he will probably throw 20 its this season.Maybe 17 or 18 with the good defense.Jameis would probably only throw 12 ints all year if he started under Sean Payton. Hopefull Leftwich catches year long covid
