BY IRA KAUFMAN

It’s simply too painful to think about. Buc fans understandably don’t want to go there, but we must.

The news hit at One Buc Place like a thunderbolt. An unidentified assistant tested positive for the coronavirus, sending two other assistant coaches scrambling into quarantine for precautionary measures.

The staff had returned to the facility for only a few days before the positive test. The assistant coach was asymptomatic, which is one of the most fearsome aspects of this pandemic. You walk around feeling fine, but you could potentially be infecting someone else who suffers severe effects from the virus.

Hands-on coaching by Tom Moore might chage

A month before training camps open across America’s most popular sport, we face the possibility of the entire 2020 season being shelved. That dire scenario may not be likely, but it’s not a longshot, either.

If the season is wiped out due to COVID-19 concerns, no fan base in the league would be more disappointed and frustrated than Buc supporters.

This is their time — and it could be taken away with an edict from Park Avenue.

They Owe Us

Kansas City fans are naturally jacked up about the opportunity for a Super Bowl repeat. Supporters of the 49ers expect a run for another NFC title and Baltimore fans can’t wait to see what MVP Lamar Jackson does for an encore.

With all that said, Buc fans would be the most disconsolate of all because of where this franchise has been and where Buc Nation thinks this organization is headed.

A lost season would be the NFL version of Apocalypse Now in Tampa.

Tom Brady will turn 44 next summer and there’s a chance he’d retire rather than wait another full year to play. And what about Rob Gronkowski, who would have taken two years off at that point?

There is no next year for the new look Bucs, writes Ira Kaufman.

The football gods owe Buc fans a 2020 season. In the words of Lovie Smith, simple as that.

Around these parts, the anticipation level for an NFL season may be unprecedented. Of course there was considerable excitement coming off the 2002 championship season, but this is Tom Brady we’re talking about.

Tampa Bay has never had a sports icon like Brady in its midst. He has single-handedly raised the club’s national profile and stoked interest from the casual fan.

That’s the mark of a mega-star.

Make no mistake, NFL owners want a full 2020 season. So do the networks that line those owners’ pockets with bundles of cash.

But you can’t wish away a pandemic, or buy it off with a bribe. Dr. Anthony Fauci doesn’t sound overly optimistic that the NFL can pull this off, especially if there’s a second wave in the fall.

If a Bruce Arians or a Tom Moore become infected, they would be in a high-risk category. Football’s a sport that demands close contact by its very nature.

Fate has not been particularly kind to this franchise over the years.

There have been too many misguided draft picks and too many lousy coaches, but the Bucs tend to get the short end of the NFL stick. Remember the Bert Emanuel ruling vs. the Rams in the NFC championship game? How about winning 10 games in 2010 — and still not making the playoffs?

Not hearing those cannons fire this year would be the cruelest blow of all. There will be other days for Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, but Brady is on borrowed time.

Let’s face it, a fall without the NFL would be tough on everybody.

From Las Vegas sports books to South Tampa sports bars, we crave pro football.

Here’s hoping smart minds prevail and figure out a way to have a safe, exciting 2020 season. For Buc fans, the alternative is simply unfathomable.

Good article Ira and I’m still pi$$ed about that Bert Emanuel bs call.

  2. Alexander Nascimento Says:

    On point once more, Sage!
    They owe us bigtime

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Clearwater Phillies just shutdown because players, coaches etc tested positive…

It’s very real the season could be cancelled…

  4. Cannon Says:

Honestly… signing Brady and Gronk to go all in on a SuperBowl season, only to have it get cancelled due to a pandemic is just the most Buc’iest thing I can imagine for our team.

It just makes sense, given the horrible luck this franchise history.

    As always, Go Bucs.

  5. bojim Says:

    Thoughts and prayers for everyone.

  6. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m on record as saying signing Brady will go down as one of the worst Buc blunders of all time.Gronk is the 2nd blunder at 10 mil to play half a season. I wonder how much of that money is guaranteed to brady whether he plays or not. I’m guessin quite a bit of it. There won’t be much of a season this yr. When and if it starts, its gonna end quick with many players getting infected. That puts yet another aging yr on Brady. That 2 yr window was terrible to began with. now its down to one. The whole decision obtaining him was not well thought out. But then again, we are..The Bucs.

  7. Bill Cicero Says:

Fauci = Chicken Little. People are finally seeing through his hysteria and doomsday predictions.

We never should have moved beyond “stay home if you’re sick or vulnerable”. Period.

People die from the flu every year by the thousands. We don’t close everything down because of it.

Michael Fumato studies pandemics and has written numerous brilliant articles about the China Flu. I suggest reading as many as you can find

What happens if on Thursday before the game the quarterback, special teams room or a bunch of older coaches get tested positive. Arians and some of the other coaches are high risk people (over 65 with heart problems). Unfortunately, until they come up with a vaccine all close contact sports and concert type settings are screwed. Just the facts people.

Oh sweet Jesus! Why, oh why do we continually go down this road? The great orange man will not wear a mask. Every scientist stresses the importance of wearing a mask and social distancing while the great orange man, who won’t wear a mask, asks his toothless followers to sign a waiver for COVID-19 to come see the great orange man. And his toothless followers will show up, sign the waiver and attend. Many on this website will read this very simple post and say, “Fake News!”

  20. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    >>You walk around feeling fine, but you could potentially be infecting someone else who suffers severe effects from the virus.<<

Sure, let's just ignore the fact that this has been debunked using the actual scientific method, something Fauci and his henchmen know nothing about.

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

Joe Montana played the 1979 Cotton Bowl with the flu and hypothermia. He led Notre Dame to a last minute comeback win after eating chicken soup at halftime.
It was so cold, the stands were less than 1/2 full- but there was plenty of social distancing thank goodness…

  22. Stanglassman Says:

Pryda- If this government did a good job like most of the European counties did we would be playing football this year. Unfortunately we didn’t now we are paying the price.

Mike Johnson-I feel the same way.

  23. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

alanbucsfan…..maybe chicken soup could be the key to COVID. Tell the great orange man that. He’ll agree with you! He’s gonna have 19K toothless in Tulsa on Saturday night.

    Bill Cicero Says:
“Fauci = Chicken Little. People are finally seeing through his hysteria and doomsday predictions. We never should have moved beyond “stay home if you’re sick or vulnerable”. Period.”

Never in history have we ever quarantined healthy people for any reason. Maintaining a healthy immune system requires that people be exposed to the elements. By developing antibodies to agents found in small amounts in the atmosphere, our system creates the healthiest immunities possible. When you separate yourself from these agents by masking and obsessively cleaning, you actually weaken your immune system.

These are facts. It is also a fact that FB, twatter, and giggle, don’t want you to know these things–which is why they. Keep censoring doctors all over the world who speak these truths. The powers that be want you sick. They want you scared. They want you spreading disinformation. You should ask yourself why.

  25. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Alvin Scissors Harper-
Nah, the Orange Man is more concerned about the “Weak Tit” pandemic sweeping the country

  26. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Alvin Scissors Harper Says:
“Every scientist stresses the importance of wearing a mask and social distancing…”
    .
    .
Flat out lie. If this was true, the government arm of social media wouldn’t be censoring thousands of scientists and physicians, and those who share their posts.

But thank you for playing government shill!

  27. firethecannons Says:

So Ira stop listening to Dr Fauci, the guy has been wrong on this pandemic more than he is right. He is a globalist that wants complete control of America. He wants to see us close up again for a virus less deadly than the flu. People who are sick, old, with comorbidities are at risk. Like BA –he can stay away–our team can operate with BA off the field.Stay positive and fight for this season–don’t cave in to the drama.

  28. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Tc Says:
“… until they come up with a vaccine…”
    .
    .

Does anyone realize that the common cold is a coronavirus? When’s the last time you heard of a cold vaccine? Flu vaccine is a joke and actually lowers our subsequent ability to fight off the flu naturally. Many get the flu after vaccination.

  29. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

    Alanbucsfan

That “weak tit” as you describe it seems to be grabbing hold in FL pretty good! We’re probably on our way to becoming the next NYC, or maybe even worse. I know that you’re not concerned. I’m not concerned for myself, but I’m certainly concerned for those who are really old or at risk, especially with the orange man, his cohorts, the uneducated and his toothless followers who refuse to wear a mask and abide by social distancing guidelines.
    3 things:
    1) Avoid large crowds
    2) Wear a mask in public
    3) Stay 6′ away from others
If we could simply do that in this country for a few weeks, we wouldn’t lead the world in deaths and cases, though I understand many people have a thirst here to be #1.

  30. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    mark2001 Says:
    “…120,000 by Covid…”
    .

Just ignore the fact that up to 80,000 die in the US annually from the flu, and we don’t destroy our country over it by shutting down. Just ignore the fact that they’ve admitted to inflating the COVID19 death statistics by counting any death with a positive COVID test as a COVID death. Just ignore the fact that we are still using tests that are returning false positives. When the MSM wants a pandemic, they get it no matter what the facts say. Very scientific.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Well said Alvin…I’m a younger senior with no pre-existing conditions and O blood. So I would likely survive this. But I have to think about other senior Americans… those not so fortunate, including kids with conditions. I don’t want their blood on my head, or the tragedies that may befall their families from my selfishness and lack of concern for others. I though America was about loving and protecting this great country and Americans. For some, I guess don’t love America or Americans; their whims and desires are more important.

Hey people I just read 28 Clemson players have covid and haven’t even started practicing together. What do you not understand about a contagion pandemic.

  35. Stanglassman Says:

It’s weird that the tiny handed tyrant followers seemed to take this pandemic more serious in March and early April. Then the studies come out that showed 90% of the deaths were happening to less effluent black and brown people and they stopped carrying about it. Or as they say, they just because they believe so much in their selves and God. Others be dammed.

  36. HeyItsAdam Says:

Letting Winston go is starting to look more and more like a dumber and dumber move.

    Just like I said.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I am so tired of misinformed people downplaying C-19. I go by the top source: CDC.

I don’t even watch the news except for weather. And NFLN, I guess.

According to the CDC, the flu does not kill more people. C-19 does kill people under 30. Facebook and Twitter stories claim it doesn’t. Those stories rely on bogus information from satire news sources. That’s why Facebook is clamping down on things.

Here in Bradenton, we’ve had over 50 new cases in the past week, at the hospital my wife volunteers at. According to the CDC, Florida is becoming the new epic center for C-19, with over 3,000 new cases PER DAY.

The truth is, people not taking it seriously are to blame for the spread of it, starting with our President on down to the youth. Had Trump and his lackies not tried to open things up too soon, the thing would be almost gone.

I get it…people need to make money. We all have bills to pay. However, if opening things up had been delayed another month or two, we would have beat this thing. Now, because they opened up, we’re looking at 6-8 more months.

The only way there will be a football season is if players AND their families are quarantined through February (won’t happen), or if a vaccine is made (maybe).

This season would have been great, but it’s already toast. People are just in denial right now.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Stanglassman it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with bad leadership and gullibility.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

mark2001, I believe that attitude is a result of “me first” and bully mentality in our political leaders…primarily the very top guy.

  40. Swampbuc Says:

    It’s the Bucs.

    NFL will cancel.

  41. Craig Says:

The first thing is that the NFL saw this thing happening a long tome again. They went to their helmet people and said to make a safe helmet for COVID.

Maybe they will, it might not be completely perfect, but it will help.

The length of the NFL season also helps.

There is still a possibility that our season will come together for us.

The truth is that COVID has killed 120,000 people in the US in three months, the flu kills 100,000 per year.

Stay safe so I can someday I can meet you. At the moment you are all my friends because we are all Bucs Fans.

  42. Stanglassman Says:

The flu kills between 5-55k a year never close to 100k per year. The average is about 28k.

Bonzia- I disagree if this thing was killing 2k wealthy white people a day instead of poor minorities it would have been taken way more seriously. Unfortunately it’s just the way the world works.

  43. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
“I am so tired of misinformed people downplaying C-19. I go by the top source: CDC.”

The CDC is funded by the Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. Maybe you should expand your thinking on who might be misinformed.

Ask yourself why only a couple of government functionaries get a voice on the subject instead of creating a more broad and inclusive body of voices from the best private sector medical community in the world.

Ask yourself why our government keeps citing the UN instead of the best private sector medical community in the whole world.

  44. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
“Stanglassman it has nothing to do with race.”

Glassman is worse than NDog. He’s like the Al Sharpton of JoeBucsFan. Turns everything into a racial episode.

  45. Redzone Says:

    LIKE+ @Bonzai and @Mike posts! Agree.

COVID-19 is 10X more contagious than FLU, with horrible lasting impact to a healthy person, for life, whether they acknowledge or not. In contrast, most of us have had FLU at least once and recover absent of any specific long-term impact.

Back to NFL — COVID-19 be damned! Money rules! Come hell or high water, the rich owners will convince players to take the field for football on Thursday, Sunday and Monday TV. The critical revenue for owners is TV money, not fans in seats. Yep, players want to play and get the $. CHECK box!

The NFL pre-season has not even kicked off yet, and asymptomatic players with positive tests are already impacting teams, and preparations.

So many who are infected w/Covid-19 are asymptomatic. And lucky that they do not experience the bad effects. Good for you/them. The unlucky persons are those with co-morbidity issues who get infected by a presumably healthy but asymptotic friend. Wearing a mask helps everyone. just saying.

For football > Huddles and lining up face-to-face in formations will certainly result in significant increase of positive tests in NFL for Covid-19, given asymptotic issues and high transferability of the virus.

What happens, when 20%, 30% or 50% of players and coaches in NFL are in 2-week quarantine state by October or November?

As Ira opined —“Let’s face it, a fall without the NFL would be tough on everybody.”

We as BUC’s fans, have the GOAT QB, and so many are expecting serious SB run.

For me, even absent of Covid issues, I think expectations are too high, and Brady’s age and immobility will be a factor for Bucs success in 2020. I love his smarts, past success, better weapons, yada yada.

    Still – Go Bucs!

  46. Pok Says:

Haha Bill Cicero is ignant. I refer to it as selective science and it is a clear mark of dunning kruger. I am sure he has an extensive history in armchair quarterbacking and talking about things he don’t really understand because he read something someone else told him to read so now he thinks he is a kind of expert. Stick to second guessing the playcalling and the draft and leave the science alone. Or…find your favorite empty conspiracy theory and drink the cool aid instead of analyzing data. People love to do that these days. Here is to hoping we get a season! I’ll take empty stadiums to still get Sundays!

  47. Jean Lafitte Says:

Once again Sage, you’ve penned another quality article that cuts right to the chase. It would be a disaster of epic proportions if the season were cancelled.

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

Well said Jean! It would be truly sad!

There’s a lot to this thread. Those that feel there are other motives afoot could very well be right. There have been several Executive Orders penned under the thin guise of mayhem that look to benefit a select few.
I can’t believe people are still comparing this to the flu, despite all the facts to the contrary.
What’s the answer? Gee, I don’t know. How about a little common sense?! It’s clear that in most spiking states the mitigation was working. Notice the word “mitigation”. Is it such a personal affront to be cautious?
What we’re arguing over is petty. There is always more than meets the eye. The TRUTH always resides somewhere in the middle.

Dr. Fauci was asked for his opinion on football. Nothing more, nothing less. Why a dedicated professional with his reputation is being vilified is absolutely abhorrent. I know why. That answer was given via Twitter. I mean, after all, it HAS to be someone else’s fault, right?!
Hello…….Fauci is a SCIENTIST. He’s not a law-maker, or politician. He does NOT make decisions regarding public health. I get that he’s an easy target, but come on people. Use your head.

  49. Tc Says:

I can’t remember a time that the government sent you $1200 for the flu. This is real people.

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

Luv this article Ira. Its true, Buc fans caught up in the Brady/Gronk euphoria don’t want to even think about what might happen. Us old schoolers though, we know, we been round the block with our beloved Bucs for so many years, Our heads spin when confronted with what might become reality. The covaid malady could wipe out this season leaving us with a one yr window with..Mr..skills fading brady. And he probably will still get his salary. Not to mention acquiring a guy who has not completed an entire season since 2011..That be you Mr. Gronk..easy 10 mil id you can get it..right? I just think in our desperation we screwed it up..again. Instead of keeping Jameis one more yr and placing pressure on him by moving up in this last draft and getting his replacement, we screwed up royally. And then to add insult to the party, We have all world Gabbert when..not if Brady goes down.My poor snakebite Bucs. I love’em and hate’em at the same time.

  51. Seminole Bill Says:

Clemson just announced that 23 of its football players tested positive for the virus while participating in voluntary workouts. There is no way to protect players engaged in a sport like football from the virus, much less fans in the stands.

  52. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mark 2001 and Bonzai

Thanks for trying to moderate this discussion with some facts. May I add another few facts to simply consider. They are not R or D nor liberal or conservative…they just ARE!!!

Florida is now considered a hot zone(based on the rise in new cases) that COULD be in danger of exploding. The numbers do not lie. There is NOBODY in office right now from the Gov down who is exaggerating numbers and in fact if anything they are accused of falsifying numbers downward.

ODDS of a season. My father the bookie taught me not to gamble unless I was the house…but I wouldn’t even want to book bets on this one.

1.) We are in a hot spot…bad news

2.) Football players are young and healthy…good news

3.) Their coaches and OWNERS not so much…bad news.

4.) Do Black Lives Matter? Do Older people matter? This disease is hitting both groups harder than others. And so with a disease more damaging to black and a league that is 70% AA do I need to connect the dots to show the significant difference in danger for the players?

It’s not just the players, coaches, owners etc…it’s also THEIR FAMILIES.

So one black player I saw interviewed is tremendously worried because his wife is black and diabetic…what if he brings it home?

And then there’s the game itself. How much imagination does it require to see how the competitive balance would quickly be destroyed if one team lost a dozen players while another lost only a few…one it’s top three stars another no real important players. How will the league correct for that?

What are the odds that players will be on IR with Covid? And remember even if it doesn’t affect THEIR health they’ll still be quarantined for two weeks. Think these quarantines will grow in number? Will they even overlap?

I have no answers…actually I have some initial thoughts but they are all so bad and I do not wish to be negative. I believe I’m going to stick my head in the sand and forget all of those questions.

  53. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Hello…….Fauci is a SCIENTIST. He’s not a law-maker, or politician.

But he is an admitted Liar

  54. Cobraboy Says:

The probability of asymptomatic transmission of CV10 is a click about 0%.

I keep waiting for the “second wave” from all the protests and riots across the country and so far there are none. Seems this virus will stay away from anarchist rioters but we are told targets Orange Man Bad rallies. Pure genius of a political virus.

Masks do nothing to percent healthy people from CV19 infection. In fact, if eyes are not also covered/protected a person can still become infected in the right circumstances…

Flu is RARELY on a death certificate, although the flu does, indeed, kill the same vulnerable people—the elderly, obese, and those with poor overall health—as CV19, even though many die WITH a flu virus (as 92 y.o. Mom CB did in early March, died of pulmonary edema after a 3-week hospital stay including 11 days in ICU.) However, anyone who does WITH the CV19 virus—not because of the virus—is considered a CV19 death.

CV19 is the second Politically Correct disease of my lifetime, the first being HIV/AIDS (of which I was in the very epicenter as a major clinical player on the late 80’s-mid 90’s). If you don’t kneel before the prevailing PC opinion of CV19, The Leftist Mobs will destroy you, just like they did in the 80’s-90’s…

We see that behavior on this very blog.

  55. Stanglassman Says:

I’d be way more concerned if the guy with the raci5t screen name agreed with me. Do these people ever inventory their opinions years later to realize they were wrong about everything. I get it nowadays you can just dwell in the fever swamp sites, OAN/Fox new for information and make up conspiracy theories to justify your views. Guys like crack pipe are what’s holding this nation back from meeting its ideals and potential.

CV19 and other opportunistic diseases affect black people more because according to CDC stats blacks, especially elderly blacks, are far less healthy than the general population in almost every metric.

CV19 affects the elderly with at least one significant health issue by exponential factors more than any other group. It is NOT an “equal opportunity” infection.

It could be worse. Native American/Alaska Native elders have statistically far worse general health than blacks, with alcohol playing an increased role.

No doubt socioeconomic factors are at play here.

  57. Cobraboy Says:

We should refer to CV19 masks as “Submission Muzzles.”

  58. Player 1 Says:

Great article as always Ira. It would be a Bucs life to endure another lost season when we think we got it right this year….again.

I think I got even dumber than I already was trying to read Baracks misinformation campaign on this thread. Bro, you need to get away from the conspiracy sites, and go and flunk medical school a few times seeing how you want to become a bonafide medical misinformation specialist.

He’s also poised to make hundreds of millions more off of vaccine patents which he has his name on. It’s unethical for someone like him to even be in a position to influence policy, but of course no one cares about ethics any more, especially in Washington DC.

What if I change my user name to “Bush’s Coke Straw” will that make you feel better? Same exact thing, just happens to be a different color. But that would somehow be racist against white people, wouldn’t it, by your definition of what’s racist? Because obviously (to you), if you criticize a person, that means you hate him for his skin color, right? Then how can we ever criticize anyone without being accused of racism? You are a simpleton.

Oh, great. Now I must be racist against whatever you are.

Maybe not, but every blue state and blue city is making decisions based on his recommendations, many of which have had the highest death tolls despite draconian policing of big brother administrative policies.

Let’s hope Ira is more sage than prophet. With a Chiefs SB ring on his pinky finger…Ira has to be feeling good about last year at least. The Bucs have a 2 year window before the fuse likely blows. Perhaps Ira can share a strand off the lock of Hank Stram’s toupee he used for luck last season.

Unfortunately BFM, we are Americans, only our arrogance precedes our arrogance. Our consumer capitalist world is our oyster and everything is ours to buy & sell; all property & all resources; damn the consequences and our children.

I wish the deniers would put their money where their mouth is and sign waivers that would deny them care before others, in the event of their contraction of COVID-19.

In all of this discussion no one mentioned the States’ under-reporting of COVID deaths, including our own. It’s even worse than we think, it always is.

As frightening as this pandemic is, what leaders are doing unbeknownst to us, while we focus so much attention on Covid (or any distraction, real or imagined) may have longer-reaching effects. It’s what we don’t know! If we are looking left, you better know the Nefarious are toiling to the right! Tough times indeed!

Honestly… signing Brady and Gronk to go all in on a SuperBowl season, only to have it get cancelled due to a pandemic is just the most Buc’iest thing I can imagine for our team.

It just makes sense, given the horrible luck this franchise history.

    As always, Go Bucs.

    @BringBucsBack-

you make a great point about what else has been going down while we’re focused on covid, whether it relates to that or not.

A slew of rollbacks on clean water, clean air, food safety and education issues have all been happening almost weekly. More and more corruption and criminality from this admin, including the latest fri night news dump about firing yet another inspector general / prosecutor / non-partisan position, for having the audacity to simply do his job.

I just read on nfl.com they already have 19 people testing positive for Covid and recommend that the players not work out together in groups. Can’t you see That with almost a hundred (players, coaches and personnel On a team) times 32 teams there will easily be hundreds that have the virus at any given time.

    Cobra

You keep referring to your experience with HIV. Really? You present yourself as an expert with NO attributions other than your claims.

Meanwhile at least one of your claims is totally specious!!! Perhaps it was you who quoted the WHO official who claimed that the asymptomatic were not infectious. The very next day the WHO retracted that statement.

The W.H.O.’s Monday comments created confusion and drew criticism from health professionals outside of the agency who warned that transmission of the COVID-19 illness is still possible without having apparent symptoms.

The W.H.O. said more information is needed to make any broad statements about asymptomatic transmission but it currently estimates that 16% of people are asymptomatic and can transmit the novel coronavirus, while other data show that 40% of coronavirus transmission is due to carriers not displaying symptoms of the illness.

16-40% is hardly ZERO!!! But the statement that is most important and seems to be totally eluding you Cobra is….”The W.H.O. said more information is needed to make any broad statements”

Broad statements for something as new with research changing daily is not smart yet you post incredibly definitive statements as if you know something science does not. Yet you NEVER post WHERE that information is coming from.
