Joe often brings updates on how former Bucs stars are doing. Today, Joe brings word about Gerald McCoy.
GMC recently went on Colin Cowherd’s show, The Herd. And it seems GMC plans on coming to living rooms across the nation during fall afternoons when he hangs up his shoulder pads for good.
For his entire 10-year career, GMC has languished on non-playoff teams in the NFC South. Even winning teams in the NFC South don’t pull many eyeballs and largely are afforded second class status throughout the NFL.
Losers in the division? You are NFL steerage.
Now, GMC plays for America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys. They are afforded first-class status on the NFL’s international flight no matter their record.
Joe Buck broadcasts so many damn Cowboys games that the guy ought to move from the football desert of the midwest known as St. Louis to the Metroplex. Save on travel.
(Column Intermission: How bad of a football town is St. Louis? When that place still had a team, Joe was in a watering hole in the region on a Friday night and heard far more chatter about high school basketball than the NFL or the Rams. One dude who proclaimed himself to be a hardcore sports fan never heard of Jameis Winston — and this was after he won the Heisman Trophy!)
While appearing on Cowherd’s show, GMC gave a blunt hint why he chose the Cowboys to play for this fall. Former Bucs media relations chief Jonathan Grella Twittered out the back-and-forth between GMC and Cowherd, transcribed by R.J. Ocha of Blogging the Boys.

So GMC wants to be a college football or NFL analyst, eh? Well, he’s got the smarts and eloquence for it. It’s not crazy to envision GMC in a broadcast booth.
So maybe the Bucs get yet another guy from the Ring of Honor in the broadcasting business. Warren Sapp, John Lynch, Chucky, Father Dungy and Rondé Barber did it, too.
Now before you toss your Cheerios all over the kitchen floor, if you don’t think GMC has a shot at the Ring of Honor, think again. He made six straight Pro Bowls. He’s in the conversation.
Says who? No less of an authority than the Sage of Tampa Bay sports, long-time Pro Football Hall of Fame voter Ira Kaufman.

Imo…. The ring of honor should be only for impactful and memorable players. Having just a couple of ProBowls shouldn’t cut it.

Before this spirals out of control, I will make one statement:
GMC was a GOOD football player on bad football teams.
Should he be in the ROH? No, not in my opinion. Not before far more deserving players get in first, again IMO.

Look for the Cowboys to have a mediocre to poor season now that the Softness is there.

Nobody cares about softy McCoy or WinSTUNNED. 2 colossal disasters in Bucs draft history. Suh had more impact in one year than smileys whole career. Again, we readers want Bucs stories, not picking our wounds open….

Joe I believe your sample size for St. Louis is a bit too small to reach the conclusion you have. Not that I care about the city or team but, their attendance for games was always better than LA’s while the Rams were there & would probably still surpass what LA’s attendance will be like moving forward.
I wonder if GMC’s new teammates wonder if his dedication to this upcoming season is where it should be, after a statement(s) like this. We don’t miss him.

Yes ROH for McCoy! We all want to celebrate his six pro bowls, with no playoff appearance’s. We all want to remember the glory days of Buc football while GMC was the team leader. The guys a joke Joe. Even now he picked going to a team for his after football career, not once did he talk about playing for the Cowgirls to win a superbowl. Best thing BA did when he got here was getting rid of that poser. I’m getting on in age. If he makes the Buc ROH I hope I’m not around to see it.

never did care for GMC THOUGHT HE LOAFED, was soft feigned injury’s just when the team needed him, yucked it up and had a good time when the other team was up by two scores or more in the 4th quarter, to me he does not deserve to be in the ring of honor, i could care less about his pro bowls and accolades, i think he sucks, he has a loser mentality, if he was all that why did carolina not resign him? tampa resigned his replacement suh, whats that tell ya, GMC is playing his last season, imho he sure did fleece the glazers out of mucho deniro, as he was helping opposing players off the turf and apologizing to them, GMC can go fu@$# himself glad he’s been gone, team got a whole lot tougher with his removal

Pockets of Los Angeles might not know a thing about football but Joe has never been in a metro region that was as yawning and ambivalent about football as St. Louis.
Football to those people was something to do on weekend afternoons to kill time between the World Series and spring training.

Paul Gruber was shafted yearly for the pro bowl since he played for the Bucs, but I see Gerald in the same vein. Very good, not great player and I think that McCoy might get in.

Put yourself in GMC’s shoes. You are a awesome player surrounded by a piece of quality here and a piece of quality there but the rest?
Wouldn’t have a job anywhere in the NFL or bagging groceries.
What would you do? How would you react.
The youthful revolving door the Bucs had going for almost 20 years.
He made the ProBowl 6 times. This means he won the popular vote amongst players and coaches to be determined a great player. (furthering my belief that the ProBowl should be played after the Super Bowl and should be STAT driven only.) You did the best? Then you are a ProBowler. Anyways, GMC ROH? You bet!
Too bad he didn’t get the SuperBowl the Bucs are aiming for now.

GMC is a legend in his own mind. I despise the Cowboys, always have.
